A note on the coffee incident. The woman in question didn't even want that much money. All she wanted was McDonald's to pay her medical bills. She received third degree burns from her coffee as it was nearly boiling. The reason McDonald's was liable in hat case is because the coffee was only that hot because the machine was defective. The McDonald's in question was aware of the problem and had requested repairs be made to the machine. Not only did corporate ignore the request, but told the restaurant that they could not stop using the machine. the award was so high because the jury gave punitive damages. These damages did their job, as McDonald's has corrected the problem. So people pretending that this lawsuit was ridiculous are either ignorant or disingenuous.

the coffee suit was because she got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her thighs when she was mixing the cream and sugar, she asked the restaurant to pay the medical bills of almost ten grand but they offered 800 dollars, that's why she sued.
Harambe's mistress there's actually a whole documentary about it on Netflix (it includes other fast food restaurant law suits) but she later passed away due to her injuries from the burns as well

There's a documentary on Netflix called 'Hot Coffee' that goes through what really happened. The pictures of her burns are awful!

+DeltaNoodles And while that's tragic, she is the one who spilled it on herself. True Mc Donald's kept the coffee hotter than "industry standard", But industry standard was still hot enough to scold a person.
The problem was she was driving an unfamiliar car with the cup between her legs as there was no cup holder. At her age she knew coffee was hot and could burn. It was poor judgement on her part.
It wasn't McD's fault. They just had the money. For the record I don't like McD's. Their food is mediocre at best and they treat their employee's like dirt.

There is way more to number 97 then you mentioned. the McDonalds case is indeed where a woman spilled hot coffee over herself and she did indeed ask for money for the damages done to her leg. A big part of that money is not for that but acts more as a punishment for mcdonalds for doing something they shouldn't have.
They had recently changed coffee suplyers in order to safe money. The coffee from the new one however tasted less good. so in order for the customers not to notice that, they heated the coffee up untill it got really really hot, like not safe anymore. People would then not taste the difference between this coffee and the older better, but more expensive version. It's because of this that the woman asked that much money.
Where i'm from a citizen can only sue for the damage they themself suffered. In this case that would be the doctorcosts for healing the legg. (which was a real severe wound). In the USA they can ask for punitive damages. This is in order to keep the company who had to pay them more in line. because not only could they be sued by the DA for stuff like that, but also every possible customer could sue them. (yes if punitive damages are being paid they can keep that money and this can indeed be a lot of money, but this is to insentivise people to take actions when something is unjust. to be fair most punitive damages aren't that high). Therefore they changed their coffee brand again. or at least made them less hot.
So please don't make it sound like this is something soooo crazy... at least nuance it a bit when you make a factslist like this.

The McDonald's coffee thing wasn't silly at all: The coffee was too damned hot and had seriously injured many people, including the woman who sued. She wanted to be reimbursed for her 6-figure medical expenses.
The coffee at the time was about 170 degrees Fahrenheit which is past the safety standard and enough to burn skin.
re: the lady who sued McDonalds, you might want to look further into that before making fun of her. The coffee had been complained about several times, it far exceeded the maximum temperature you're allowed to serve coffee to the public, she received substantial burns and tissue damage to a large portion of her legs, and lastly, she only sued for the cost of her medical treatment (which I believe was in the tens of thousands?). The court decided to award her a far greater sum in order to discourage McDonalds and other coffee retailers from continuing to serve far too hot drinks.

I need to correct you on something. The little old lady didnt actually want to sue. Her lawyer pushed her to because she had to have 2 million dollars worth of skin graphs and reconstruction surgery on her thighs and groin. She had to go through physical therapy for several months afterwards as well. The coffee after being tested to come out at scalding conditions. It literally melted this little old lady's skin. So yea....just saying...it was necessary. She only used them for her medical expenses as well.

The old lady coffee lawsuit is actually very misinformed. There's a documentary explaining it. She didn't want to go to court, she just wanted help from McDonald's to cover her hospital bills after their coffee gave her 3rd Degree burns

Did you hear that they are selling chicken nuggets by the bucket in Japan. Also that lady who sued for the hot coffee had 3ed degree burns and needed skin graphs. She didn't actually sue for the millions but the judge awarded her the equivalent of a day's sales of coffee by the franchise. She didn't actually get that amount.
That one about the hot coffee sounds silly until you receive context. It was so hot that she got either 1st or 2nd degree burns on her thighs (I'm not sure of the severity).

Here's a fact which wasn't on the list. In the 80's, McDonald's was sued by Sid and Marty Kroft over the McDonaldland advertising. The Kroft Brothers argued that the advertising was meant to emulate TV shows that they made. McDonald's lost the case.
