As a experienced/qualified gardener but now old and injured gardener, you motivated me to use my battery hedge trimmer to cut down what needed to be pruned to ground level. Happy chopping down.

A long handled spade is a good tool for a allotment , saves on back ache 👍

You are so right about having the will and desire to put in the graft. People really need to understand how much time and energy a plot needs. Especially one that has been neglected.
Also I really loved seeing your rainbow. I was enjoying watching you be super enthusiastic about getting stuck in to your new plot and then the rainbow popped up and it really made me smile.
I am amazed and impressed with you taking on this overgrown allotment! My garden plot here at our community garden is only 10 feet by 12 feet and it can be overwhelming at times. I have seen new gardeners fail with their plots over and over. They fail to understand how much continued effort it takes. Yay for the apple tree! That is an awesome discovery! Didi

Just crown lift (taking the lower branches off) the trees rather than taking the tops off, let's more light in, but doesn't affect the shape of the tree 😊

Awesome job, and your spot on with clearing ASAP to prepare ground for next season. Maybe cardboard over the areas you do weed . Cardboard will help suppressing weed regrowth, and with a few inches of compost on top , be ready for planting. .
And yes definitely try to use the timbers for Maybe bird netting ( possibly for fruit area)
Pallet could be tied together with some garden wire and make more compost bins and fill them, might get compost for spring 😀
Emma thank you for another great video. May I suggest you just thin out the trees( Like Monty Don) so the birds can nest and fly through. And as for the ornamental grasses, if you like where they are; dig down around the roots and place a barrier ( old bricks,rocks,pieces of wood) and make an in ground pot for them so they can’t spread.
The apple tree is growing away from the other trees. Would layer those other trees and make a hedge for the birds.
A lot of logs gives you the chance for a spot of Hugulkultur - put them at the bottom of your raised beds. Really long-term fertility.

You are very fortunate to be able to get an allotment at such short notice. In my part of Norfolk there is a 3 to 4 year waiting list. It certainly looks like you will have your work cut out, good luck with it, will have to get your family and friends interested to give you a hand at 77 years old I often call on friends and family to do the jobs I now struggle with then I give them plenty of fresh veg to help them out. You need some decent boards to make your raised beds and ask friends for any spare cardboard to line them.

I think I'd be tempted to try and remove the worst of the weeds, lift the membrane then hire a cultivator to turn the soil. That would give you the best idea of what area you have to work with ,then you can plan your layout of your new allotment . If some of the membrane can be saved, use it to go where you plan to have paths. Good luck 🤞🏻
Don’t you just LOVE Sedge Grass?! It keeps appearing in my garden - seeds blown over from next door. I try to catch it when it’s just a few fronds as it pulls out quite easily then

I blame tv gardeners who suggest planting grasses. Nice in landscape borders outside supermarkets but not in small gardens in residential areas. The one I pulled out of my garden had very sharp blades.
You are right Emma, you have to put the work in to get something out. Go girl… i allotment on my own and it’s blinking hard work 🎉

It really is hardcwork once it gets to that stage the top end of one of my plots has gotten like that and if I'm well enough I'm going to clear it with power tools and then dig the roots and tress out. I've been looking at ways of grinding tree stumps with an angle grinder.

Well done Emma! I'd also like to take on my neighbour's plot but they aren't leaving yet! That "horrid ornamental grass" is Pendulous Sedge and has been the scourge of many gardens that I have worked in. Good riddance! but look out for the Thousands of seedlings that will spring up; they shed Many Many seeds every year. Good luck 👍
It’s really good to see the allotment from taking it over, I’m nearly 9 months into my first plot and it is hard work to do it properly, but in the long run it will pay out, firstly I cleared all the rubbish then I’ve been clearing an area to planting stage them planting then starting the next part.
Personally I’d have preferred to get it all cleared before starting planting but I had to show I was growing to keep my plot. X

Try a spade with a pointy end to dig the hard stuff out, and losen it with the fork first.
I'm so enjoying this! I can highly recommend a mattock for getting out things like that ornamental grass, bramble roots etc.

I would say it’s important as gardeners to respect nature, it would be good to trim the bushes/trees down to a hedge. Shade cast by trees is tricky on allotments
Get yourself a sling blade. They work great for brush like that.

My allotment has barnweed on it and its A night mare to get rid of this year it has been A bad year for the fruit
I’ve got the same problem on my plot. It’s pointless using a rotavator and besides that we’ve got a lot of slow worms on site. I dig it out and bag it up in empty compost bags. My plan is to make compost for next year.

Yrs, many of the trees need to go. You have the allotment to grow food and the shade will hinder that💥

Hi Emma, that's such a great investment, you'll end up with a great combined plot. Girlfriend I think you will benefit a lot from a weed eater, the ones battery operated, they are pretty light and manageable. And goggles for your eyes always, but with the weed eater the work will be done in no time.

Emma be sure to store up all those old tree branches and bits of rotting wood . You will be able to use them as filling in the bottom of new raised beds , as in hugelkultr gardening .
The apple tree can be trained back straight by attacking a rope to one of the nearby trees you're intending to get rid of . Make a big loop and twist it with a big handle or similar so it pulls the apple tree . Keep tensioning every week or two over the winter .

Oh, you are so lucky to have that apple tree. Your new plot will be ready for Spring in no time. And the fire pit thing will really come in handy for burning the bindweed and the infested tomato plants.

My plot was terrible like that when I took it on two years ago. I blitzed it and turned it into something lovely; but then I was away from it for a few months due to illness and work, and I came back and it's a disaster. I really want to keep the plot because it's my happy place. But motivating myself to go back and start all over again is really hard. Your videos REALLY help - thank you 🙂 xx

Hi Emma take care when clearing and look for currant bushes raspberry canes etc you have found an apple tree so there maybe more treasures to uncover. I would cut down those trees and replace with fruit trees and grow them along a structure to control the growth. I would invest in a Chillington Hoe it’s so useful.

Hey Emma. I would love to see you plant some grape vines in your big new space! I’m in East Sussex and the plot near me has grapes growing… I want to build a trellis structure and sow some vines soon.
