I must have been 8 or 9 and my parents took my sister and I to see the Nutcracker. The dancers did a portion of the Concert before the main show. There was no introduction or explination, just a scene of male dancers carring the ballerinas around the stage. The adults were all very serious. That is until I began to laugh hysterically. For a moment I got those sideways looks from the grownups, the control that kid looks. And then, as if en masse, they all realized what we were seeing and all of sudden the audience joined me in my mirth! I felt so much joy after that. I was beaming the whole night.

So the Parisians find our American import as funny as I do! It's been years since I've seen The Concert on stage in New York and I still laugh. There must be a Jerome Robbins Trust to keep these works of his in shape. They are doing marvelously.

The French love this? Of course they would! It's Chopin! It's la tradition du buffon! It's light farce! It's the satire of high culture wrapped up in high culture (something Americans get away with too much and the French not enough)! A culture that produced a Baudelaire, a Duchamp and an Yves St. Laurent but thinks Jerry Lewis was a comic genius couldn't but love it.

Hurray! I get to see Jerome Robbins's immortal The Concert, from the Paris Opera. I've seen the pianist as a man and as a woman - and I think the girl's infatuation with the music is more credible if the pianist is a man. See Les Lutins and Alina Cojocaru's rejection of two suitors for the young man playing the violin! That's just my opinion.

The Berceuse is played so lethargically, I mean come on!! Even Chopin would be aghast. She's playing like a slug!

You don't know anything about ballet do you...? The choice of the tempo depends of the dancers !
