  • Welcome to Meditalk 24! In this crucial video, we delve into the escalating issue of Dengue fever, exploring its symptoms and available treatment options in Bangladesh. Dengue is a viral disease, and its outbreaks are typically observed from July to October. The main symptom of Dengue is high fever, ranging from 99 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Fever may persist, and in some cases, return after subsiding. Other symptoms include body aches, headache, pain behind the eyes, and a rash on the skin.
It is essential to know when to seek medical care for Dengue. There are three categories of Dengue fever: 'A', 'B', and 'C'. The first category usually exhibits a mild fever, while the majority of Dengue cases fall under the 'A' category. Hospitalization is not necessary for these patients, and adequate rest at home is sufficient. However, patients falling under 'B' category, with additional symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, diabetes, obesity, depression, congenital issues, kidney, or liver problems, should be admitted to the hospital. The 'C' category is the most severe, causing damage to the liver, kidneys, and brain, and may require specialized care in intensive care units (ICUs).
For home care, patients should focus on complete rest and increase fluid intake. Paracetamol can be taken for fever relief. Adults of average weight can take up to eight tablets of paracetamol daily. However, if an individual has liver, heart, or kidney-related complications, they should consult a doctor before taking paracetamol.
It is crucial to avoid certain medications during Dengue, such as aspirin, clofenac, or ibuprofen, as they may lead to bleeding. Platelet count is not the primary concern during Dengue, and unnecessary anxiety about it should be avoided. Platelet transfusion may be necessary if platelet count falls below 10,000 or if there is bleeding from any part of the body, although such cases are rare.
If Dengue fever subsides but blood pressure drops or bleeding occurs from the gums, nose, or rectum, saline may be administered intravenously in hospital settings. In these situations, hospital admission is essential. Dr. Afsana Begum, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine Division, United Hospital, Dhaka, advises on Dengue fever and treatment in this video.
