  • Revolutionary poet, playwright, and activist Amiri Baraka is recognized as the founder of the Black Arts Movement, a literary period that began in Harlem in the 1960s and forever changed the look, sound, and feel of American poetry. Baraka (formerly LeRoi Jones) helped to empower African American artists to establish publishing houses, journals, and university ethnic studies programs. His books continue to spark intense political and aesthetic controversy while receiving tremendous critical acclaim.

This is the best. I love Amiri Baraka but you might want to go do something during the long, long introduction. Be sure to come back for Baraka though. You don't want to miss any of this.

easily one of the most interesting poets of the 20th century, a true revolutionary pushing every boundary he finds, but always willing to apologise when he finds a line and feels he's crossed it.

The soot comment reminds me of the toxic dust cover-up atrocity that reached Connecticut and certainly caused untold respiratory disease following 9/11. We’ll never know.

Sad, they all just have to die right. I love his poetry, his cause, but how they betrayed King & the SCLC (& I detest Abrahamic religions, so the hell with Jesus). Agree or not, they put in the work & youthful ego severed the thread, & killed The Movement: gangs & drugs, their legacy. What was King's: Education & nonviolent geniuses. They were King's last hope, & they betrayed him.
