Walter Furry Lewis, was one of the last of the true Memphis blues songsters. I miss Uncle Furry most too much, as my life winds down, like an old Columbus pocket watch. With a bad mainspring. Bless my Uncle Furrys soul, and his musicality.!!!

This is probably my favorite of Furry's performances. "Baby Won't You Please Come Back" is probably my favorite rendition of Furry's Rag.

'bout 1966, I was living with Memphis sculpter and teacher John McIntire in midtown Memphis. A car load load of collage students from a school up North came by and ask about Furry Louis.I had heard of him, but assumed he had passed away years back. A few phone calls to local musicians like Dr. Sid Salvage and Lee Baker of "Molock", came up with the info that he was still living in an apartment in an alley off Beale Street.
Furry had retired from his job as a street sweeper. Lee Baker quickly got him to publicly perform with "Molock", later known as" Mudboy and the Nutrons".That led to a rvival of his career.

Love it! Musicians and bands such as, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, etc., were heavily influenced by this generation of bluesmen...
...Keep on rockin' in the free world...

Furry's voice didn't change much with the years. You listen to the original recording from back in the day, and he basically sounds the same as on this clip.

I've never heard any such thing....but the word "easeman" pops up in country blues tunes from Florida to Virginia.....almost always in the context of "I'm a natural born easeman, don't have to work"....

Really now? Well I'm from memphis, as a matter of fact, I work on the street where old Furry worked and played music most of his life. Casey Jones was a train driver and rode from memphis to the northeast often, train riders would often be referred to by the rails they rode, folks going out west were westmen, east were eastmen, etc etc. I've played with folks who learned this song from Furry and they've told me eastman

Per Green's Dictionary Of Slang, and per Paul Oliver: easeman or eastman.

In Jackson TN they have what is supposed to the piece of track that Casey wrecked his Locomotive on. Casey Jones Museum. Ol' Casey should have watched his speed.

Sounds standard, but his phrasing is just mmmh.. Heard this first time on the Anthology while ago. But God Memphis Blues is different, both tracks brilliant.

Why the ignorant racist comments about the roots of all modern music. Every good rockband covered african american blues e.g Led Zeppelin.
