- For the first time ever, the Vatican has opened the doors of the iconic Sistine Chapel for a studio recording with the Sistine Chapel Choir - the world’s oldest choir. The landmark new album, Cantate Domino, captures the sounds of this extraordinary acoustic, with music performed by the Pope’s own choir. The album, which was made by special permission of the Vatican, includes music written for the Sistine Chapel Choir by Palestrina, Lassus and Victoria during the Renaissance. Sicut Cervus by Palestrina is the first music video from the Sistine Chapel Choir.

#SistineChapelChoir #Palestrina #CantateDomino - Hudba
Have you ever seen a performance of this piece in a church? If so, which choir and where?
I've listened to the Sistine Chapel Choir performing Sicut Cervus in the Cathedral of Bari, my hometown in southern Italy. And I've also performed it myself with my ensemble :)
11;30 am Spanish Mass at Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Look for Christ Cathedral on Facebook
Yes, in the Biala Podlaska (it's a town in the east Poland). Choir: Schola Cantorum Misericordis Christi or Poznańskie Słowiki in Poznan
Every summer in Rimini (and also other town in the same region) there's a festival called "Voci nei chiostri", and one of the involved choirs (called "Jubilate Deo") regularly performs it, in context of the cloister of the ancient Monastery of Graces on a hill out of town.
Coro Città di Desio
And I actually sung it some years ago in our disbanded chorus
I was half sleeping while I first heard this piece as I heard it on my radio and was compelled to get out of bed to see who composed this; it’s the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard.
Sublime and holy chant! This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Praise the Lord! Blessings! From the Sistine Chapel!
Historical renaissance pitch amd great and beautifull historical performance.
I had no knowledge of Signor Palestrina until I googled him a few moments ago what a truly remarkable man and accomplished musician he was.
Praise be to God for all the wonderful creative talent of those times and that we can still enjoy their work today.
The choral (church) recordings are so moving.
Thank you! for the helpful and insightful dialogue posted here.
I'm glad you've discovered Signor Palestrina, truly one of the greatest composers in the western tradition.
That's why he got the title as "Prince of catholic music"
Maybe the finest performance available on YT. The flow so matches the words. I keep coming back to this account.
Isn’t it just wonderful being Catholic !?
There isn’t any better that being Catholic! It is the Paradise
Isn’t it just wonderful being not religious but still love this music !?
Absolutely nothing will ever compare to being Catholic
@@DrStrange1000 That is what many fanatics who follow other faiths also think about their faith and that is the cause of many old and current problems in this world...
@@rkynj756 I completely understand this point. A point of which has been discussed a thousand times over.
Fortunately for us, Catholicism is worlds and universes apart from what any other 'faith' claims.
For example, you may not believe in God but in no way shape or form does that mean I don't love you like a brother. In fact, I pray for you so that you may find the piercing love of Christ that I found not too long ago. I simply asked in meditation to reveal to me which so called 'faith' is the true one and here we are, I'm grateful for it being revealed to me. Ultimately my friend, if God almighty was to come down from his throne and make himself known, you would believe in a second. BUT, what good is that?! Instead, he would love for you to seek him first then he shall answer.
I mean zero harm by my words above. Just try it, you have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.
God bless you 🙏🏼
Sublime!
Exquisite ! Overwhelmingly beautiful---the choir---as well as the magnificent paintings of Michelangelo . Truly this is priceless . Thank You for uploading !
Clearly a lady of both real taste and review authorship ability.
So you're more than likely aware of the choral video below (the number of comments on which, have defied my attempts to confirm the existence your likely contribution to it).

Sublime esecuzione!
May Lord bless you all! Amen!
I am so pleased along with others to hear you sing so beautifully. Forget the past and just keep on this path; enjoy your opportunity to sing with such an ensemble of singers. Thank you, director for you service.
Straordinaria esecuzione fantastici.
This is PERFECTION
... best rendition of this sublime piece
"It is not known at what period of his career Palestrina came under the influence of St. Philip Neri, but there is every reason to believe it was in early youth. As the saint's penitent and spiritual disciple, he gained that insight into the spirit of the liturgy, which enabled him to set it forth in polyphonic music as it had never before been done. It was his spiritual formation even more than his artistic maturity, which fitted him for the providential part he played in the reform of church music."-New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia
What a Divine touch😊
Thank you😘😘😘😘
I really like such music When I listen to this song, I imagine me when I'm going through a hybrid train with my friend
The Bird flying over that statue in the start of the video could be the famous Sistine Seagull who perched on the Chimney back on 2013.
Feels holy😇
Angels Sing! Love you ! Father God. Medici and Michaelangelo
Don't knock the conducting style. Remember that this music had no bar lines; it was in many ways quite free in form. This is exactly how one should conduct this music, like Gregorian Chant, freely and expressively. As in the chant "The text determines the accent while the melodic contour determines the phrasing" (William P. Mahrt, "Chant", A Performer's Guide to Medieval Music p. 18.)
Exactly.
Um actually this piece does have bar lines and a meter. It's in 4/2. And it was written during the late renaissance, long after gregorian chant was popular.
Bradley Cheek The time signatures you find on modern prints of the music are editorial. The original manuscripts did not have set meters, but the beats were instead taken entirely from the tactus.
Bradley Cheek Also, Gregorian Chant was still the base of all music in the Roman Catholic Church when this was written. It was until the mid 19th Century...
Ryan Hawkes this was /nooot/ written in the nineteenth century. It's not even gregorian chant. It is literally a renaissance motet. There's no way of getting around it. Now I agree that chant was given a beat off-the-cuff, but it didn't even have distinct pitches and meter, which /Sicut cervus/ simply does possess.
The Sistine Chapel has a VEVO... L O L
Jacob Gue most deserved vevo
That's the main tempo
Mettete like se questa musica vi suscita emozioni particolari😢
Sono italiano comunque
Meraviglia
So vastly improved since I saw them in 2005. Now it sounds like they have the idiom down pat: they are signing Palestrina and not sounding like an audition for a role in a Verdi opera.
They sound really really well... but, what's the director of the choir doing? Seems that he's listening and directing another music. Still they sounds great.
jean gebser this is similar to Gregorian Chant, polyphony was written differently. Their music back then was “more reformed
Than chant” however, there was no Bar lines....
@Marco Mariani Not Frisina, Massimo Palombella is the actual Sixtine Choir director.
Exclusive
If more catholic churches sang music like this there would be many, many more catholics lol
Increible lol xdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxd
Massimo Palombella, or the resurrection of the Sistine Chapel Choir....
A.M.D.G.- U.I.O.G.D.
Sound, great. Speed, erm, not so much. Slooooooooow down a touch...
But that's the tempo
Wow! They have improved very much recently. I think Palestrina would be very happy with this performance.
La stacca troppo veloce!
In astonishment one hears the piece of Palestrina, performed by the Sistine Chapel. I am overwhelmed:
The sistine improved a lot during those years. Gotta give some credit to Massimo Palombella, as much skeptic as I was.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏽
Troppo alla bersagliera
Can someone explain about the pictures of naked people I saw
Apparently this performance isn't an improvement.
If so, could the choir please continue not improving.
(And if this directing method is incorrect, could the
director please continue being incorrect)
its pronounced Aye Bear
A sublime piece but no way this is a top class performance. The tuning isn’t great, the lines aren’t clear, the texture is mushy and the conductor doesn’t seem to be in control. I feel sorry for the recording engineers who must have struggled to achieve even this standard.
Dear Angus, maybe your reception's not great on Mars.
Really? That comment applies to all the other versions on CZcams. Another thing, can you sing in a church without sounding mushy?
Too fast.
a bit fast tho
And that's the tempo
Seems to be a nervousness/restrained in the style of direction. It does not allow the music sound as if it is itself making a statement of its own Glory. Also it's too fast...
ERiCDrAyViN disagree, it is still within acceptable practice. Don’t use U.K. choirs as reference, use rather German ones.
Agree. This makes me more nervous than relaxed
I laugh at English audiences saying that this is too fast - telling Italians how to sing Palestrina- laughable
Exactly, and one thing you get here which you get nowhere else is consistency of vowels sounds.
Amos 5
So good it almost makes you forget about the child abuse.
you can say the same when you see soldiers, a movie, a graduation party, or sporting events like artistic gymnastics.
Are you afraid to forget about the child abuse? Is it your favourite fantasy?
Dear "Monsferax",
Please note that the point that was being made was that,
while ever the Church authorities fail to adequately address
the issue, this failing unfairly badly reflects on the rest of the
Church, over whom they claim authority.
Good sound but much, much too fast
Not too fast at all. So many choirs drag the tempo unbearably. Look at the text: "As the deer longs for running water, so longeth my soul after Thee, O God." The text renders an anticipated excitement for running water as the deer is thirsty. Similar to finding a pool of water in the desert and moving quickly toward it. The tempo should reflect that text. I had sung that motet many times over 10 yrs. under one of the Catholic church's finest conductors.
I agree with you.
Disagree. It is within acceptable practice. British choirs sing it very slow hence your impression.
Much better than in the past when everyone was screaming, but I think the men's voices need more adjusting. I would reduce the men's voices a bit (still too thick for the acoustics). I would suggest removing two basses and two tenors.
A little unsubtle but not too inaccurate assessment of
the choir's former method. They've gone from being an
embarrassment to anything but. (Unfortunately the
recording has had its bass level electronically enhanced,
necessitating a proportional manual decrease of it when
being played)
It's only the basses who are a bit too loud.
Way top fast. Makes me stressed and nervous to listen to. Not calm and pleasant at all.
Yes, best to stick to calm and pleasant Rolling Stones, Kiss or ACDC music.
It is pleasant to listen to
No girls
little boys...
I've resented my love for wives that left. I send their will of to kill the living dead in my wake. Mangos and all the sweetness in this earth Marx their Cracked up life. G helped. Hello its G. Z- !!!Ad.ele hunch back of Notre dame
where are the ladies......just askin.....really...they can't even sing in the Sistine Choir??
It's all male choir. Same as the San Francisco Gay Mens Choir. They are amazing!
It’s an all male choir. What is the problem here?
Dee Dee no one Cares about a Sodomite Choir, they must
Covert from their Pagan ways
Not in the Catholic Church. There is no place for women or heterosexual men there ;)
Dear Alphonse,
Since, "of faith, hope and love, the greatest is love",
therefore the San Francisco Gay Men's Choir falls
under the category of Christian. (By the way, under
which category do you fall?)
weird performance
Then you don't understand Renaissance music! It was to perfection!
