      Most indie games get a Linux release, as for AAA game ones, while only a few studios do make a Linux release through 3rd party studios such as Feral Interactive, i don't even care about it, since most AAA games we get are basically garbage.
      Also there's the asset flips filling out the Steam store, which Linux users don't have that problem since these kinds of "games" are aimed for Windows only.
      I am running Linux on my main PC for like 2 months (2 years i've been using Linux overall since i've had it installed on my old laptop) and so far i do not miss games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield etc. as for games that i do miss though like Witcher 3, i just rely on DXVK.
      Of course while at it i ask developers about the Linux release which is always a good thing to do.

    I think the biggest problem of Windows is how dated the OS is. It feels like they're just trying to build a castle on top of a pile of garbage. I used to be a Windows guy, but Linux is so much more robust. And if one distro doesn't work out, I can just use another. If Windows doesn't work out what do you do? There isn't a real alternative.

      Couldn't word it better. Microsoft started off with an already outdated MS-DOS(it didn't even have directories, aka "folders", which have been an obvious part of Unix a decade before), and they just kept piling stuff on and on and on.

    Also you have a bunch of processes running on windows that you never really know anything about. Windows needs more RAM than linux and the task manager is not even showing the exact usage by the OS. You can't completely stop sending information data to Microsoft... even though you paid money. There still isn't a tabbed explorer. You can't really keep Windows from updating. It's like your parents who know everything better, except they don't.

      Have you tried to install ACS on Wine? As long as it emulates a standard graphic driver, it should work smoothly, it is the games and their use of non-documented features that Linux distributions do not support. But stick to a mainstream distribution, Ubuntu or Mint, plain vanilla (Mint Cinnamon + Docky and Wine) - try on a USB stick, and install the ACS that you use for Windows with Wine. There are better tools on Linux, in particular rendering, but you can test them later. The graphic scene is the KDE tools - Krita. Many graphic studios use Linux because of the tools here.

    @KesGaming Před 6 lety +14

    I agree, installing apps again by default after the user has uninstalled them again is a terrible service. However, you can disable this using the group policy editor; it is a simple settings change.
    As for notifications, you can turn off the notifications that you do not want in settings, and it will only display system and software notifications for programs you have installed. And if you really just like the sidebar, I can link you to a program that will reactivate those older "balloon notifications" like they have in Windows XP and Windows 7. Oh, and just so you know "scan drive for errors means exactly what it says. Open up File Explorer, click "This PC", right click your drive, click "Properties from the drop down menu, and then in the windows that pops up, click the "Tools" tab. You'll see the option to check the drive for errors.
    For package installers, a lot of software can be bundled and installed at once with a program called "Ninite". Personally, I don't care much for installer packages and prefer to install programs one at a time so I can customize a few settings during the installation process, but that is just me and personal preference. You are right about the Windows Store, it is not a good program to use. This isn't so much because of the store itself as it is because the apps in it are built on the WUP platform, not the Win32 platform. I personally only use it to download programs that are only on WUP and do not have a Win32 counterpart, such as a lot Microsoft exclusive games like Gears of War 4 and Forza.
    As for licensing, you are mistaken on several points. I personally have Windows 10 Enterprise, activated, and it didn't cost me one cent. You can activate Windows using a few command prompt lines. Does it violate the terms and conditions? Sure it does. But buying used games or software discs and installing them on your computer also violates terms and conditions, and I'm going to wager that doesn't matter too much to you. Also, you can buy an OEM license key for Windows 10 Pro on eBay for $6. I did that for one of my computers and it worked perfectly.
    You can customize Windows quite a bit. I've personally customized my installation so many different ways it isn't even funny. I've made the sounds different, the cursor symbols different, I've made Windows 10 look like Windows 7, Windows XP, etc. I've seen people make it look like Mac OS, people have used programs like Rain Meter and Jarvis to make it look like a spy portal, there are thousands of possibilities for customizing your setup like you want it. Sure, the average amount of people that use Linux customize their setup more than the average Windows user, but that's to be expected, since the user population contains a greater percentage of technology enthusiasts.
    Overall, your video wasn't too great., You made a couple of decent points, but you also spread a lot of misinformation. Still, I can see why you like Linux, and I hope you continue to enjoy it and have a good experience with it. Have a great day! :)

      Part 1
      "Aha. But why?"
      Why? So you can have it not install the programs you don't want. It's straightforward. Sure, it is a little one-time inconvenience, but it is taking a couple of minutes to turn a particular setting off really that much to ask?
      "Again, why would I have to do this? In a program I just paid 100 wulong for? I expect not to find any troublesome settings at all!"
      Well, the problem here is, you assume notifications to be a troublesome setting. And for some people, they are. Others like the notifications and find them helpful, especially the less computer-literate among us. Troublesome settings exist in almost all programs, regardless of their cost, but what is "troublesome" often depends on the individual. However, in Windows, these settings are relatively easy to change, which can't be said for many other programs.
      I will say that having to turn off the re-installation of unwanted apps is preposterous, and that is a very shady default setting. I will not condone Microsoft for including that, but I find it a little overboard to chuck the whole system on that one thing, especially when it is again possible to turn it off without a terrible amount of trouble.
      Also, I looked up "Wulong" because I thought that it was an actual currency, and was curious to see what it converted to in dollars. However, since I couldn't find any such currency, I'm gonna assume you meant dollars and were using that as slang. If that's the case, I don't blame you for being upset. I would be too, because you over payed quite a bit for your software license.
      "Link to a program. Mhm, and you don't find that a bit clunky and overly complicated? You know, we Xers, we love things nice and easy and not complicated with many excursions,. Also we prefer to opt in if we want to, over a solution to opt out."
      Perhaps I did a poor job of explaining. Let me give a bit of history. In older version of Windows, notifications from software programs popped up from the taskbar in the form of balloons. Unless there was a particularly urgent error, in which case an error box popped up in the middle of the screen. In newer version of Windows, notifications appear in one side bar, to keep everything in one place.
      Some prefer the old notification system, but that is no longer present. However, using a software program, you can click a button and it make little changes to the code that will make notifications appear in balloon form again.
      Do I find that overly complicated and clunky? Of course not. We're talking about opening a program, scrolling down to an option that says "Activate Balloon Notifications", and clicking a button that says "Activate". How is that complicated or clunky? It isn't even inconvenient, you install a program, click a couple of buttons and you are done. I've used more effort to microwave leftovers.
      Don't get me wrong, I like things that aren't complicated and easy too, the path of lesser effort per reward is the most efficient one. But we aren't talking about "many excursions" here. If making this change involved writing new registry keys or running command prompt, I might be inclined to agree with you. But we are talking about one program and a few buttons. And yes, it is much better to be able to opt in instead of being forced to opt out. That is a legitimate concern that needs to be addressed. But again, it is impractical to throw an operating system, a web service, or anything really, under the bus due to the inconvenience of having to opt out of a couple of features.
      "Uh oh. :o Are you aware of the fact that you're trying to sell us Windows by telling us how to violate it? And that all becomes totally obsolete and insignificant once you're on Linux? So, what then are you trying to argue here?"
      I'm not selling you anything. I don't get any personal recommendation for recommending Windows over Linux or vice versa. I use both operating systems, and like and dislike features in both systems. You and I can both agree that neither is perfect, and both have legitimate problems and concerns. But, when someone goes to the trouble to make a video and post it online where he spreads misinformation, it doesn't matter whether I like the system or not, I'm going to comment and point out the areas where he got his facts mixed up.
      As for telling you that it is possible to use Windows and enjoy it by violating the terms and condition,s yes I am aware of that. I don't see what the issue is. And yeah, licensing becomes insignificant when you use Linux because it is published under general public licensing.
      What I am trying to argue here, is once again, you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. You argue "Oh, Linux has a big advantage over Windows because you don't have to bother with licensing." And I look at this and say "Yes, that's a very nice benefit, but it isn't as big of a deal as you make it out to be. The fact that you have work arounds to licensing concerns with Windows that aren't a great inconvenience, and then are able to enjoy all the increased benefits you get with using Windows over Linux makes it easier to see your argument isn't that big of a deal after all. The licensing issue isn't really significant, it only seems like it because you are trying to make it way too big a deal.

      So... you wouldn't buy used software? Why not?
      And is it just that way with software, or is it that way with books, automobiles, and countless other thigns as well? Where do you draw the line here?
      Forgive me for asking, but why are you bringing up Bryan Lunduke? What does he have to do with any of this? I looked him up, and saw his website, but I don't really see what he has to do with the discussion at hand.
      Also, I am getting the idea that you do not understand the difference between breaking the law and adhering to terms and conditions. I'll try and clear it up.
      Neither Microsoft nor Apple can put legal restrictions on you, at least not in the United States. If they have that power in other countries, I'm not aware of it. Here though, the government is the one who puts legal restrictions on you. All Microsoft and Apple can do is require you to agree to a type of contract known as terms and conditions to install their software products.
      These terms and conditions are legally binding. But that does not mean they are now law. It isn't illegal to breaks this contract. You will not go to jail, you will not be fined. If the company in question takes the matter to court, then your penalty for breaking the terms depends on what the judge decides, but it likely be whatever the original agreement stipulates, or some sort of settlement, as determined by the negotiations of the lawyers.
      Now that you hopefully understand a little bit better how this works, let's look at the situation practically. If you violate the terms and conditions for an OS install... who cares? Microsoft doesn't care, Apple doesn't care, they've got bigger things to worry about. They aren't going to take you to court and spend time and money punishing you for making an unauthorized edit to their source code for your personal convenience. It's the same with the terms and conditions of used software, it doesn't matter. Like you say, why should you care about the restrictions that these companies are trying to put on you?
      Another thing I feel like I should point out. I hope you are aware that using Linux does not allow you to escape from dealing with licensing altogether. It only means you don't have to deal with licensing of the OS. You still have to consider the terms of all the software you install that isn't published under General Public licensing. I personally don't really worry too much about this, but licensing seems to be a big deal to you.
      "Examples please."
      Alright. He (the creator of the above video) insinuates that there are little to no customization options for Windows, but several for Linux, which is not true. He insinuates that Windows cost far more than it does. Notice where he says "...Well you can get discounts and everything. But. for what I do on my computer, I need Windows Pro, and that is not a $100." It's interesting his choice of language there. While he doesn't come right out and say it, he strongly implies that Windows Pro somehow doesn't receive the same mysterious "discounts" as the "normal" version of Windows does. This also is not true and these price differences are very substantial. When he says Windows costs $100, he is referring to Windows Home, which sells for $99.99 on Microsoft's website. Windows Pro sells for twice that, $199.99. However, that is on their website. You can buy valid, legitimate keys on third party websites, such as eBay, for substantially less. I have personally bought a Windows Pro license key for $6 and not only did it work perfectly, Microsoft confirmed its legitimacy in a support case when I got their assistance.
      Why so much less you may wonder? Well, the key I bought was an OEM key, and the $200 version is a retail key. What' the difference? The OEM key will only work with one set of hardware. That is, it only good on the one computer you activate it on, and can't be transferred to a different computer. The retail key can be transferred between machines and different sets of hardware. That is the only difference. Usually, Microsoft only sells the OEM keys in bulk to computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP.
      Now, I'm not saying any of this to make Linux look bad or Windows look good. I'm just trying to address misinformation. Linux is a great OS kernel and Windows is also a great OS. Both have their ups and downs. But, we should discuss the merits or lack thereof of a given OS off of real problems, instead of griping about something little and making it seem bigger than it is.
      I'm well aware of the purpose of this video. The creator is a Linux fanboy. He made this video to try and make Linux look very appealing in comparison to Windows, but he did so by spreading misinformation and exaggerating things about Windows. He also tried to establish credibility, as if he had a good idea of what he was talking about, but he seemed very misinformed on several points, he didn't even know what the "scan drive for errors" notification meant.
      Thanks for replying, I've enjoyed elaborating and discussing this further.

      "setting off really that much to ask?"
      YES! In the case of having to set it off in order to avoid nonsensical bullshit by MS it is asked much too much!!!
      "you assume notifications to be a troublesome setting. "
      No, not the notifications. What will happen when you accept them is troublesome. AFAIK Windows gonna reinstall shit you just got rid of a couple days earlier, right?
      "in Windows, these settings are relatively easy to change, which can't be said for many other programs."
      How many OSes do you know about? And how many of those are sending you forced updates? I mostly dabble in Linux which gives you all the options but forces nothing on you. And least of all it won't do anything without you knowing about it.
      So in Linux you don't even need relatively easy to change options, since the problem case never occurs.
      "I will say that having to turn off the re-installation of unwanted apps
      is preposterous, and that is a very shady default setting. I will not
      condone Microsoft for including that, but I find it a little overboard
      to chuck the whole system on that one thing, especially when it is again
      possible to turn it off without a terrible amount of trouble."
      No, it's not overboard. As a European I'm maybe spoiled by better consumer protection but for me this is a major reason to chuck the whole system. And every amount of time I need to turn the shit off is terrible! Unacceptable. Particularly when there's a so much better alternative. I even find discussions like this terrible, unwanted, unneeded and utterly insignificant and time-wasting.
      "Also, I looked up "Wulong" because I thought that it was an actual
      currency, and was curious to see what it converted to in dollars.
      However, since I couldn't find any such currency, I'm gonna assume you
      meant dollars and were using that as slang. If that's the case, I don't
      blame you for being upset. I would be too, because you over payed quite a
      bit for your software license."
      Wulong ... ooopsy, woolong, is the currency used in legendary 1998 anime Cowboy Bebop. I thought in geek circles it's public knowledge. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_Bebop Then again I forgot we're talking with Microsoft clients here, who might not be thatb geeky or educated.
      And, yes, when I bought my system builder copy of Win7 I paid like 30 €uro for it, which I found grossly overpriced.
      I won't read all of your lenghty 2 comments and respond to everything. You're trying to downplay the negative effect of something that isn't even worth thinking twice about. Win has failed, Linux is the clear winner in all aspects while Windows is faaaar out of my world by now. On Linux since 2011 and never missed Windows, never looked back.

      I wouldn't buy software. Period. I'm on Linux, remember?
      "Now that you hopefully understand a little bit better how this works"
      Huh? I know how all that works, dontcha worry. And it bores me. You're talking to an academic here and an ex-system admin. I was busy in Win,, MacOS, Unix long before Linus ever dreamed about Linux.
      "You still have to consider the terms of all the software you install that isn't published under General Public licensing."
      Ugh, what sort of freakware are you using? I don't know of any Linux software that's not FOSS, and if I'd come across such a rare flower I simply won't pluck it. Or ok, if you're such a nitpicker, I know of some special software that cost money, but I'd never use it. Case closed. It's insignificant since nobody needs that shit.
      "Why so much less you may wonder?"
      No. The only thing I wonder about is how anyone would pay anything for software. It should all be in the public domain. Which fortunately most of it actually is.
      "instead of griping about something little and making it seem bigger than it is."
      I fail to see anything little in this. What MS does is inhumane shit, no less. It's a biggy. It's criminal in many countries. And it's so easily avoidable. ;) And the most important part is that operating Linux is fun! Windows works. MacOS works much better. Linux works and is fun to use, and you'll learn a lot and become clever and know your computer inside out. Only after I switched to Linux I stared building my own machines.
      "Forgive me for asking, but why are you bringing up Bryan Lunduke?"
      Sorry, I watched a video by him directly before I stumbled across this pretty bad video and was confused. Confused about why in 2018 people still feel the need to justify their switch to Linux, and even more cnfused about why other people are coming out of the woodwork and trying to defend an amateurish, indefensible bullshit OS like Windows. It's not 2002, when the MS apologetes still had the own or other valid point. Nowadays all you can say is "It's not as bad as you say it is."
      Andf exactly there I come in and say: "Yes, after MS has looked at and copied various Linux tricks and sells them to the public as their own inventions and brand new stuff (even though in Linux it's all old hats), Win10 is a halfways decent OS. But it's too little too late. The clued up users have left the sinking ship long ago and they won't come back. Even if Windows cost only 5 woolong, it's just not worth it."

I'd much rather go to the website and run an installer (or better yet, just have a zipped executable) then screw around with a package manager. Actually one of the very few things about Linux I don't like. That being said, I agree with your other points.

      Think of it as a storefront dude. Like google play or the ios app store. You can still install through installers, but it's not recomended. I guess the learning curve with the package manager is knowing how to add repositories, but you probably don't need to do that for the most part.

      *_Steam is a package manager._* Just because you can install it with another package manager doesn't change that. If you want to switch to Linux but your reason for not doing so is _"b-but muh vidya gaymz!"_ then you should stop thinking about it entirely, because even if you bother to try it out, the urge to play some flash-in-the-pan, Windows-only crap, will continually cloud your judgment. Linux doesn't need participation from that kind of person.

"Complicated" about Linux is only that fact that you gotta unlearn many of your Windows ways. As a matter of fact it's proven that non-savvy users (kidz, housewifes, elderly) can work better and faster with Linux than any of the other OSes.

      Whoa! Most of that was wayyyy over my stupid head. You must know I'm not very tech savvy and only learned really a bit about computers AFTER I switched to Linux. My switch was first and foremost politically motivated, not technically. I was calculating on having some severe problems with Linux but was willing to endure them. Little did I know that Linux was indeed so much better and easier than Windows ... at least for me it was.
      Ok, back to the topic: I have the feeling that you're making your life unnecessarily complicated by using shiitty Linux distros. And sensitive peripherals. I only use mom n dad software and keep all my personal data on external hard drives and USB sticks. And eventhough I'm on Nvidia GTX graphics and wireless Logitech mice I don't need any of their game-ish software. So I have little to no problems installing and using Linux.
      Anyway, what I learned already on my first day, when I was still reading up on Linux and found an article about how stupid Ubuntu is and that real kool kidz are on Mint. And that the Unity desktop isn't practical but one should use Xfce instead. Suited me, since I hate hate hate the vertical panel on the left side of the screen and Ubuntu's crappy hardwarev detection and lacking support of proprietary drivers. Mint does all these things so much better. And a week later my new found Linux gurujin told me about I should switch to Manjaro and the Mate desktop. First I was afraid, I was petrified ... but soon I noticed what a clever move that was since it was like a whole new world opened itself to me. With the giant AUR and the nicely oldfashioned and very customizable Mate desktop you have the biggest selection of open source software available on the planet, and a nice desktop that looks and feels just like Win7. Meanwhile I'm a step further and stepped up from wannabe Arch Manjaro to the very new distro Namib GNU/Linux, which is closer to upstream ArchLinux than Manjaro and faster and more cutting edge.
      That's how you do Linux.

Not only according to the EULA MS is allowed to do this, they have actually done that with programs like Malwarebytes, Speccy, CPU-Z, HWMonitor, CCleaner and even PDF-viewers and drivers like Intel Rapid Technology and AMD Catalyst Control Center. Microsoft claims that this was a bug, regardless of whether or not that is true, a golden rule of an OS is that it doesn't touch the user his software without his permission.

    All of these are for the Pro version of Windows. I use the Pro version of Windows because I use my computer professionally. I don't know about other versions, such as the Home version, for people who use their computer casually and not all the time. (I say this because one thing that a lot of people bitch about with Windows is that it's not very easy to power use the Home version, which is true, because you aren't supposed to).
    1) I understand bloatware is a problem, and personally dislike it myself. I agree that nothing should come preinstalled. However, you can disable the automatic installs of apps and turn off all sponsored stuff natively.
    2) Just like on a cell phone, you can disable the notifications for specific apps. The quick access panel, or whatever it's called, is very customizable. As for the settings that come there by default, they are just placeholders for display, don't be mad because Microsoft doesn't immediately and automatically know what options you want. The tablet mode is a default because many laptops with touch screens and tablets run W10, and can take advantage of the setting.
    3) I never use the package manager itself to install stuff on linux; I always use my browser, and some sure I'm not the only one. The Windows Store is supposed to be the all-in-one Windows Installer, but like you said no one uses. Which is why it's not that good. They aren't going to pump funds into a project that isn't making a lot of money. As for Chocolatey, talk about no one using it. Don't bitch about a third party app as a reason to switch, just use a different app. Also if the program you want isn't in the package manager, and you have to install it manually, it is a bitch on Linux. I would MUCH prefer a windows installer to fucking with a tar.
    4) Fair, Windows is expensive, and not wanting to pay for something when there is a free alternative is a good reason to switch.
    5) Also fair. Windows is a very closed system, and it always will be. If you want to "truly own your machine" as many say, then Linux is a better alternative. However, I wouldn't say that the lack of customization "sucks." While having a system that is forced to be one thing for everyone IS very limiting, and won't be efficient for everyone, it does make it easy to use other W10 systems. If you have to, for whatever reason, use a different computer, since W10 is very limited on its customization options you will already be familiar with its interface. Put a different way: There is, for the most part, a standard keyboard layout (QWERTY). This allows you to easily type on someone else's keyboard. If instead, everyone had their own keyboard layout, you would have to completely relearn how to type every time you went to type on a different keyboard.
    I don't care that you use Linux, use whatever you want. My point is not to invalidate your reasons, just that some of the things you say about Windows are wrong, and that you can do a lot of the stuff of the stuff you say you can't.
    You're not wrong, but you are.

      "Yes, windows is expensive with around 100 bucks but it doesen't has to be. You can buy any windows key, including the pro versions on many websites for under 20 bucks. And I am not talking about OEM keys. And if you don't want to stick with windows 10, a key for windows 7 and 8/8.1 costs sometimes less than 10 bucks.

      I don't even understand why there are UWP (basically "mobile touchscreen" stuff) apps in the desktop/PC version. PC is PC, tablets/phones/2-in-1 are not PC; mixing both in one is not good. Even Windows 10 itself feels like it was made with mobile in mind (maybe not as much as Windows 8 but still...). TBH classic Win32 software is faster and better than UWP when I'm using a PC.

    • @ethanalt9048
      @ethanalt9048 Před 6 lety +5

      The store is a mess for a couple simple reasons.
      For one, its updating and loading system is too slow and glitchy for most users, since it is primarily based on Windows Update..
      And more importantly, good applications get missed from the Store because Microsoft is very stringent on their requirements for entering the Store. Thus most programs like Chrome or Steam could never reasonably make it in even if they wanted to...
      I have the exact same gripes about the Mac App Store. It is slow to launch/update, and most programs aren't in it (or cost far too much because of Apple's dev fees...)
      Linux is the only one that has managed to get it right. Doesn't make Linux perfect, far from it. But in terms of program/package management, Linux hits it right-on.

      adobe is a company, so i can't point out alternatives. As to the choice of windows, that is perfectly fine, its just that most alternatives are more then decent, but people don't really like change, if they found a tool that works any other tool that requires time to master is considered "not-as-good". I use Linux daily (for servers) but for my personal computer I picked windows exactly for that reason (laziness to change).

    All of those things can be fixed if you take a few minutes to go through the settings. My issue with Windows 10 is that it is generally broken. With almost every update the store and Windows Update gets broken. That's just one example. Windows 7 was pretty much rock solid. I like and use Linux but it still doesn't do everything that I need it to do. If they don't fix Windows 10 it is going to be very good for Linux, Mac and Chromebook. I also didn't want to upgrade to 10 so I use Mint and I am very happy with it. My Windows programs run in virtual box in a virtual machine with it's own SSD and stuff. This VM with my old Windows version is cut from the internet so I can use it till the end of time. If I need a software update, I give the VM internet, to run the update and plug it out again. Also I don't have to reboot to use Windows programs, I can copy and paste and all that between Mint and the Windows VM. Fascinating to me was how many of the programmes I used in Windows I was able to replace with native Linux applications. Right now I only have 3 programmes left in the VM, I can't replace. And Mint is the most stable OS I ever had, more than Mac OS and Windows, if you don't put all the PPAs in and such things. On EzeeLinux they have beginner's guides how to get going, because in Linux you CAN do whatever you want with your system, what usually let's beginner's break there system 1 or 2 times till they understand how to use it mindfully. But if you made a Timeshift snapshot of your system, you can roll back and break it as often as you like, to test out what is plugged in to what.

So understand that this should not drive you away from using windows and yes Linux is great for many reasons yet note: if you are a gamer Linux is not for you, Linux is more for programmers while windows is perfect for gamers since Linux does not have many games accessible over steam and barely any on its own installer but windows is okay for programming yet like is mentioned on the video it tends to get sketchy when you have to go on many different sites that may lead to accidentally installing malware or even adware. I like linux mint, but the problem is that linux doesn't have nearly enough good software to be useful in an average working environment. All that freeware stuff you get on linux is good for basic tasks but reaches quickly it's limits in a professional setting. I need full alternatives for adobe products, full ERPs and so on. Also, linux is way too complicated for an average user. Console commands are a thing of the past and of no use outside the world of IT.

    • @xuser48
      @xuser48 Před 6 lety +15

      You need ERP - look at Odoo.

    • @brainplot
      @brainplot Před 6 lety +17

      Console commands are a thing of the past? Mmmh...I don't really agree with that. What a GUI does is nothing other than give you a "cute" and friendly way of running commands in the background. However, console commands are almost always way more flexibile than any GUI you can ever use, no matter how good the UI/UX designer was.
      Not to mention that you can do very neat and great stuff via shell scripts which allow for creating *kind of* new programs off of programs you already have.

    • @ToveriJuri
      @ToveriJuri Před 6 lety +3

      You realize that graphic design isn't the only professional environment there is? Console commands are extremely powerful tools for anyone who bothers to learn to use them. Mac for example is preferred by a lot of companies in their professional environment and a power user of mac will learn to benefit from terminal commands even if they are not programmers.

    • @agro0
      @agro0 Před 6 lety +16

      @ Gianluca and the other guys
      Of course console commands are more flexible. But your comment already shows the problem that linux has, because it mostly ignores the incompetence of the average user. 99% of the people that use a computer nowadays don't know what a shell script or a console prompt is nor would they bother to learn what it is since they dont need the added value it would theoretically offer. As long as linux distributions have this elitist mindset and aren't easy enough for even the dumbest person to use it, they will never have commercial success. That's the reason why Apple is so successful. A lot of the UX design is so restrictive and guided that even the most simple minded person can use it.
      On the other hand, like I said, most of the industry standard software is not available for linux distributions. That's just how it is. And I'm not just talking about the creative industry. I can't run Auto CAD if I'm an engineer. I can't run SPSS if I need to do some serious statistics. Of course I can use Wine or dual boot, but that's not what people want because then they can just use Windows if they have to emulate anyway...

    • @ToveriJuri
      @ToveriJuri Před 6 lety +1

      What industry standard software? There's more than one that require computers. Like I already said Design isn't the only professional environment.
      SPSS is number 1 in business environment but in actual serious statistical research and on the academic field R is dominating. But even in other fields R is gaining in popularity while SPSS is slowly losing steam.

    Software and system updating is just soooo much better on Linux. I like how clean the Linux is and how powerful and easy-to-use the terminal is, especially when working with hosting servers. Linux customization is fun (although time-consuming sometimes) and I choose Android for the same reason. Win10 pissed me off with those ads and promotions and I dislike it as much as you do.
    But on the other hand, as a laptop user most of the time, I have to diss Linux about its hardware driver support/optimization, i.e. the trackpad and graphics card. The trackpad is literally *bad* when compared to Precision Touchpad from MS, let alone those on Macbooks. I know I know, keyboard shortcut is much more powerful and can perform many shortcuts but what about tracking? Also, the Nvidia Optimus experience is unbearable. I have tried serveral Ubuntu-based distros (Zorin, Elemetary, Deepin) but with Nvidia graphics on problem of crashing upon opening lid happened ALL THE TIME.

    Most of your problems can also be solved by uninstalling Windows 10 and upgrading to Windows 7 Pro x64. You will still need to pay for licensing and manually install applications tho.

      TheMagnificentZoltar True. Win7 is a far superior experience to Win10. Will stick with 7 till 2020 when support ends and go full on Linux. Might need to still run Photoshop in a Win VM but that's it, everything else that doesn't support Linux by 2020 I can do without.

    i agree with notification and and automatic installation.
    however, i do like windows installation wizard for apps.
    i like to know where and what kind of shit are installed.
    i am okay with no-customisation windows 10. the more minimalistic my desktop, the more i love.
    i have no problem with OS update either, since you can set when to receive the update, and if you set the clock (of receiving update) to your nap time which means your computer is off, it won't get any.
    however, WINDOWS DOES CRASH A LOT AND I FUCKING HATE IT.
    my main distro is lubuntu. i use laptop with 2 gb of ram and celeron 3060 processor. i did apt upgrade while openeing 8 different programs (gimp included)+ 5 Firefox open tabs and IT DIDN'T CRASH :D
    i don't even add swap (only 1 gb default added by lubuntu itself)
    if you move big files with 2 gb of ram, guaranteed your browser will get stuck. that's windows.

      How does windows crash a lot? It's absolutely never crashed on my computer. It has before on my laptop, but that was within the first year windows 10 was released. After that it never crashed on my laptop. It seems like your computer crashes a lot due to your hardware. That isn't a windows issue, that's a hardware issue.

    • @xander1052
      @xander1052 Před 6 lety

      The way I make sure windows doesn't crash when updating is using windows 7 till it dies, since Windows 7 has the decency to update when shutting down, though apt get update is WAY easier, I have to admit Debian is so easy to make it work for me that there is no contest.

    Microsoft lost me with Windows 10. I bought a Surface 3 when it came out and it came with Windows 10 on it. The forced updates ruined everything. I even tried disabling them by putting it into Metered Mode on all connections, but it overrode that one day and installed an update that fried the Network card software... literally it took itself OFF the internet. lol I sold it the following week and got an iPad, left my desktop on Windows 8.1.

    • @APyralis
      @APyralis Před 6 lety +2

      Would have thought the same if I didn't experience it myself.
      But let's assume the specifics are bullshit for a moment. Reports of these forced updates causing all sorts of conflicts (to the point of having bricked machines or having to restore the OS) are common, too common for a tech-giant like Microsoft to be having in such abundance. That alone should tell you something. You don't have to believe my story, but the sheer numbers don't lie, and the fact that updates are forced is another telltale sign that something isn't right.

    Completely ridiculous explanation. I have uninstalled almost all default apps excluding movies and TV, groove and Xbox and few others. But windows is not reinstalling them. But you mentioned that it does install them in the background. But if you install or upgraded to a latest a completely new version then only the apps get installed because while upgrading to a new version the entire os that downloaded already have those app so after upgrade to a latest version the apps get upgrade to latest version.
