Omg the way I gasped when you sair "Clarice Lispector"! I'm brazilian so it's always such a joy to see our literature getting the recognition it deserves!! So glad you liked it
I am 62 and I retired at 59 1/2 in 2021. I have never been a reader, but I wanted to start reading classics. We are on our 16th classics which is The Count of Monte Cristo. My favorite book of the ones we read. We started with The Hunchback of Notre Dame because that was the book I always wanted to read. We have read: The Scarlett Pimpernel, David Copperfield, The Three Musketeers, The house of Seven Gables, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Le Morte D'Arthur, The Sea Hawk, The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, A Christmas Carol, Anna Karenina, Treasure Island, The Black Arrow, Dracula and the other two I already mentioned. I am really enjoying reading classics
This is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!
I actually just recently read the Count of Monte Cristo myself! So glad you loved it ⭐️ what are you planning on reading next?
@@mckenziekate It is my daughter's turn to pick and she wants me to read an Agatha Christy book, Then when it is my turn again we are going to read 20,000 leagues under the sea.
this is the first video I've seen by you and I am subscribing right now! we have a lot of favorites in common and I love the reasoning for why your favorites are your favorites. got some awesome recs from this video, loved it
In my opinion, Tolstoy is perhaps the greatest novelist the world has ever seen. The way he writes sincerely encapsulates life; good and evil, love and hatred, faith and nihilism, peaceful times and times of conflict. Tolstoy shows in his writings that being aware of life's contradictions is the key to living, and living well. In such a way, we embrace challenges that life throws at us and overcome them to become wiser, more compassionate human beings. If you love Tolstoy as much as me, I recommend "The Kingdom of God is Within You" because it's a culmination of his life and work, it's a book that everyone should read and appreciate! :)
This is a beautiful description of Tolstoy’s writing! I will absolutely pick up “the kingdom of god is within you”
Thank yo Yao much for the recommendation and for sharing your thoughts.
Thank you so much for sharing these! Great list, and even though I didn't know most of the first half of the books, I had to go ahead and pause the video to go order The Radiant Lives of Animals! It's so funny that you mentioned Werther, Mrs. Dalloway, and Frankenstein all in a row, because my wife read all three of those in that order this year. These are all great recs-- I'm def gonna try to read most of these soon. Don't those Penguin English Library books feel so good in the hand? Thanks for making this video even though you didn't feel so good, and I really feel like it added a lot to bleeding out how much these books mean to you.
You asked for the viewers to list our favorite books 😳 but I'll just list a dozen of some of my CURRENT favorites (not all-time!!!) because otherwise, I'll be typing until 2024, by which time I'll have 1,000 more favorites lol
1. Hyperion by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
2. Anna Karenina by Tolstoy
3. Aurora Leigh by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
4. Sylvie and Bruno by Lewis Carroll
5. Villette by Charlotte Brontë
6. Arcadia (both "New" and "Old") by Sir Philip Sidney
7. Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf
8. Urania by Lady Mary Wroth
9. Jo's Boys by Louisa May Alcott
10. Yevgeniy Onegin by Pushkin
11. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
12. The Mabinogion Tetralogy by Evangeline Walton
13. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Okay that was way too hard to limit it to that few 😭😭😭
Thank you SO much for your kind comment! I think it’s easy to bleed out your passion for books you love haha
And that is so funny that your wife read those three books in that order this year 😂 what a coincidence.
So many of the books on your list are on my TBR and I need to get to them soon! Specifically Hyperion jumps out to me and can you believe I still haven’t read To Kill A Mockingbird!? 😝 the shame! Haha
You have convinced me to read almost all of these books! That's rare..usually I find 1 or 2. I just found you by looking for classic book favorite recommendations and now want to see your whole channel! Lol
Omg yay I am so glad! Please let me know if you end up loving any of these books!
I see Kurt Vonnegut, I hit the Like button. Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Sirens of Titan, and Mother Night are my top 4, but I like all of his books! I also really need to read Frankenstein. This was a cool list and I hope you have a great day today!
Thank you so much for the kindness! I hope you are having a great day as well ⭐️ and yes! Vonnegut is freaking fantastic
I adore Madeleine Bourdouxhe, you're the first booktuber that i follow to ever talk about her, i am so happy she is known out of french speaking countries. You should read "Marie" too, i'm sure you will like it.
My favorites of all time include Stoner by Williams, The memoirs of Hadrian by Yourcenar, La joie de vivre by Zola, and pretty much every book written by Annie Ernaux aha
Thank you for this vidéo !
Ok so you seem like you have FLAWLESS taste in literature (in my humble opinion) ⭐️
I loved Stoner, recently read an Ernaux and LOVED, excited to read the Memoirs of Hadrian 🎊 and it’s crazy because I have never heard anyone talk about Madeline Bourdouxhe either! I will be picking up Marie for sure, thank you for the recommendation!
All Quiet on The Western Front was actually a moie from the 30s, the recent release is just a remake of the OG one. I recommend it if you're into B&W films, it was the Oscar for best film back in it's day too and it's pretty good (:
Thank you so much for this information! I will absolutely be watching the original!
Great video! I really like your sense of humor. My favorites: East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Cosmos by Carl Sagan, Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo, The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang (just like Frankenstein it was written by a 18-20 old woman, just not fair), Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
Thank you so much for the kind comment! I NEED to read Pedro Paramo! Your favorites list looks fantastic 😍
I think you just convinced me to read Middlemarch 😁
Omg yayyyyyy!!!!!!! That makes me so happy I hope you LOVE it! Please let me know your thoughts!
You make me want to start with the first and then continue until I have read them all…😅 Thank you, that was inspiring to watch!
Love your personality and honesty! I like that you are open about your personal struggles. Great list too! I will check these out! ❤
Thank you so much! Let me know what you pick up! Have a beautiful day ☀️
yayy so happy you posted! my fav faction books of all time are Brideshead Revisited, Gone with the wind, and Tristan and Iseut. Oh and Battle Royale as well as The First of July for more modern stuff :)
Omg I haven’t read any of those! Gone With the Wind is on my “to read before I die list” for sure and Brideshead Revisited has been a title I have nearly picked up SO many times ⭐️
Thank you for sharing your favorites!
hellooo? ive never seen anyone else favorites include "the mill on the floss," it holds my heart .
I’m so happy to hear someone else loves the Mill on the Floss as well!!
One of your videos was in my recommended a couple weeks ago and I immediately subscribed and I’m really enjoying your videos! I was so happy to see this one pop up! So many books here are on my TBR. I really would like to read more classics this year so this was great. A few of my all time favorite books are The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, A True Novel by Minae Mizumura and La Femme de Gilles is one of my favorites too! It’s so beautifully written and I never hear anyone else talk about it. It’s definitely an under appreciated piece of literature.
Hope you’re feeling better soon! ❤
Oh my goodness I have never met anyone else who has ever heard of La Femme de Gilles let alone read it! I love this so much!
Thank you so much for the kind comment and for your well wishes 💕 I hope that no matter what is going on in your life you are happy and are always surrounded by good books haha
I haven’t yet heard of your other two favorites so I will definitely be looking them up!
East of Eden, The Book Thief, Jane Eyre (I have bought this book in every edition possible lol), Confessions (saint Augustine), Les Miserables, 100 years of Solitude, literally anything Eve Babitz does, and so many more.
I can’t wait to read Confessions, and I NEED to add 100 years to my collection !
@@mckenziekate It is one of my most annotated books I have read. I think I had an existential crisis while I read it lol
If you haven’t read it yet, my favourite book of all time is Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet. I got a copy for my birthday from my pipe organ teacher (who I’ve known since I was a baby) and I treasure it. It’s such a good book!
I have that on my shelves! I need to read it soon! I just read his book of hours and oh my word, I died inside with each page 😵❤️
ohh yesss Vonnegut love him, hope you read mother night, it's one of my favourite books of all time
Has to be War and Peace ☮️ and I got it when I was 12 years old and in hospital with my asthma and I love it and I love this amazing video and your amazing channel love your Aussie friend John ❤❤❤
Wow ! You read war and peace when you were 12!? I am so impressed, I would love to know more what that particular reading experience was like. And thank you so much! 🙏🏼
@@mckenziekate battle of Noplen trying to take over England and involves families on both side of the war
@@johnsaxongitno4life588 yes I have read it and loved it too! I’m just curious though what your emotional reaction was when you were 12!? What an old soul you must be 💕 I feel like I wouldn’t have picked up on much at that age 😂
@@mckenziekate i was in hospital for 2 to 3 weeks and while in a room on my own I found that I just couldn’t put it down it kept me going while in there and I just enjoyed what families would do for each other during a War loved it
@@johnsaxongitno4life588 wow, that sounds like such an amazing and special experience. I hope you are well now and haven’t had to go back to the hospital for anything serious since then.
I have never read Kurt V. but I feel that we would get on well and am now motivated to pick him up. Some of my faves are; The Causal Vacancy by JK Rowling (I know, I'm sorry), A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, 10th of December by George Saunders, Severance by Ling Ma, and Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line. Mostly I like Indian fiction and fiction that has social commentary on the inequities in society. I like when it's done in a funny way, so I feel that absurdist influence for sure. Might have to get to some of your faves. I HATED My Brilliant Friend but have been tempted by The Lost Daughter. I want to read some Russian fiction in 2023 and want to FINALLY get to Middlemarch. We will see.
I LOVE THE GREAT GATSBY. 'Beautiful little fool.' I know I"m basic, but I love.
A Fine Balance has been on my list for so long! I would totally recommend jumping into Vonnegut if you haven’t already ✨ especially if you love satires. I don’t know, you might not love the lost daughter if you didn’t love my brilliant friend, but it’s short so if u are interested definitely try it and lmk what you think if you do.
I listened to Djinn Patrol and really liked the audio ⭐️
I just want to say thank you for making this video. As simple as it is, I hope you understant my sentiment.
🥺 thank you so much for this comment 💕 and thank you so much for watching
Ugh; you lost me in 3 seconds.
i love the way you talk about books so much, you're so funny and i also want to see a tour on your bookshelf and your favorite perfume
PERFUME 😍 I love wild bluebell by jo Malone and wood sage and sea salt also by jo Malone. Juliette has a gun is a great perfume brand as well, I love vanilla vibes and sunny side up by them. What is your favorite perfume?
And thank you so much for the kind words 🥺😍 one day I will do a bookshelf tour haha
