    Its a reference to Angel Genchev😅1988, Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. The weightlifter Angel Guenchev wins the gold medal in the 67,5 kg category (202.5kg c&j). Stronger than his opponent by far, he astonishingly breaks the world record doing a spectacular back flip which became the Official symbol of the Games. Media proclaim Angel Guenchev a “hero of the Seoul Games”. A mere day after his triumph, the champion - widely considered one of the biggest talents in the history of weightlifting - wakes up in the epicenter of a devastating doping scandal. And this is only the beginning of Angel’s journey through hell and back. The movie is called Salto Mortale

    accordin to bulagaria coach there was some conspiracy going on against bulgarian lifters....bulgarians were caught in those categories where they were competing against Soviet lifters...Soviet lifter got benefited from bulgarian DisQualification

    • @barispeace
      @barispeace Před 5 lety +9

      Story is true. You could check the medal table in which soviets took over the medals of disqualified and withdrawal Bulgars.

      My dad always used to say how Bulgarian weightlifters would get caught doping, but the Soviet ones never did. Then the film Icarus (2017) came out and everything made complete sense.

  • @barispeace
    @barispeace Před 5 lety +19

    So sad story about his life is Soviets and their vallets in Bulgaria has ruined life of that elite weightlifter.
    Bulgarian Weightlifting team were frequentrly visited by Soviet delegation to fix the games. They offered two gold, two silver and two bronze medals to Bulgars. Ivan Abadjiev ignored and eventually rebuked them. So soviets sabbotaged Bulgarian team which led to withdrawal of Bulgarian team. All of their medals went to Russians. That is the all about story behind.

  • @NicolletIslandSlim
    @NicolletIslandSlim Před 10 lety +4

    Yeah, point taken. My remarks as to 'normal' were insensitive. I was referring to Naim's diminutive stature, of course. "Average" would have been more politically correct. But pretty much all elite Olympic lifters are on the shorter and stockier side, wouldn't you agree? There are a few exceptions, but due to better leverages and the simple fact you don't have to move the weight as far, a shorter guy should USUALLY be able to outlift a taller guy, if they both weighed the same.

    No, sinclair points just relates weight lifted to bodyweight only, so its an outright ranking of all athletes on the same board but does not include any other variables. and I think so yes.

  • @steveb3bmwm5
    @steveb3bmwm5 Před 8 lety +5

    Totally astonishing - the heaviest man on the planet by a huge 7.5kg to have ever made the 3 times bodyweight club.
    How hard is it to join? Well, it only has 6 members, (1 @ 67.5kg, 2 @60.0kg and 3 @ 56Kg), and just two new members in the last 27 years.
    Even the mighty Naim who managed the feat an incredible 11 times in competition(6 @60Kg and 5 @ 56kg), including two on the same night, failed to achieve it again on moving up to the then 64Kg Class.

    • @cheraldon
      @cheraldon Před 8 lety +2

      +JSavic - Actually 4 Bulgarians : Naim was born Bulgarian, and trained by Bulgarians.....

    • @DanaTenor
      @DanaTenor Před 7 lety

      Mount Teide and JSavıc, actually there two things to correct in the list, First Stefan Topurov accomplished 185 kg when he was lightweight(67.5 kg) not featherweight(60 kg), but he accomplished 180 kg when he was featherweight. Second Angel Guenchev is just fake, he was tested positive for doping after the Olympics, the gold medal was taken from him.(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Guenchev). So the correct list is 2 Bulgarian , 2 Turks and 1 N.Korea. Overall due to the ratio best of best is Naim Suleymanoğlu.

    • @DanaTenor
      @DanaTenor Před 7 lety

      JSavic, I do not know the story behind but it is sad that, an athlete at this level, can not compete any other competition.

    • @steveb3bmwm5

      There has never been a Mr Universe bodybuilder or Olympic Weightlifting World Record Holder who is Natural - anyone who suggests otherwise is insulting your intelligence.
      Marita Kock - the phenomenal East German sprinter from the 1980's broke 31 world records on the track during a long career during which she never tested positive once, despite Stazi Records subsequently showing she had been systematically doped by the State for the best part of a decade.
      Most experts reckon their is more chance of Marita living to be 150 years old than a natural athlete breaking her 400m WR - Marita was so good she probably would have broken the WR naturally - give someone like her some of the juice and you get performances that totally defy explanation.

      See the film Salto Mortale..a bulgarian film shot in 2014..the director is a bulgarian filmmaker named Borislav Kolev..it narrates the sad history of Angel Guenchev

  • @NicolletIslandSlim
    @NicolletIslandSlim Před 11 lety +10

    I know Naim's Sinclair from '88 is higher, but I still think that Angel's performance here is greater. Guenchev is built more like a normal guy, for one thing. Interesting to see two-time Oly champ Norair Nurikian (in glasses) as well as world champ Nedelcho Kolev (Prince Valiant haircut) in Angel's corner. I wonder why we never heard from Guenchev anymore. 24 years gone now....where is he? Still above ground? Steroids or not, IMHO the greatest weightlifting demonstration of all time.

    I have always been able to relate more to the taller and slimmer guys because I am a tall and skinny guy myself (which certainly did not help my lifting any!). After they dropped the press post-Munich, they were all predicting it would be a boon for the taller and more slender lifters (Vardy, Zlatev, Sagir), who, in theory, would have a longer pull path, and thus have more time to get acceleration on the bar. But then you have guys like Naim and Halil Mutlu who set tons of records anyway.

    Guenchev Was disqualified, he was totally on Gear. Still having said that, i dont think he was the only one, he was just caught on it. However, by sinclair, he was actually the second best lifter who ever lived besides Naim suleymanoglu with 492 sinclair points... which really is pritty amazing even if you are cheating. Personally I frown strongly upon athletes who take PED related substances...
    Btw thanks for the video.
