- TPG's Nicky and Marc explore Tokyo with local guides Maya and Ulysses at two very different budget levels. An amazing time was had, and even a typhoon couldn't dampen the mood. But we want to hear from you. Who had the better day?

Thanks for having me guys! The video turned out great ;)
The weather made it an even more memorable experience, I really had a blast.
Was this recorded around 7-8 of September by any chance? I was hiking up Mt Fuji when the typhoon hit!
Really enjoyed this one. I think I would prefer the 100 day one as it shows the normal Japan.
Marc is great on the channel.
Nicky feels the *RUSH* on every continent. I love to see it 😂
I love videos based in Tokyo. Such fun! Minus the typhoon, I guess.
I travel to Japan for work often, these days it's hard to spend $100 USD a day on food, especially at the current exchange rate. If you steer away from a lot of the tourist traps, you will have better food and more authentic experiences. Japan has a huge range of food experiences, from affordable everyday to super upscale, where they really drill down on quality of ingredients and refinement of the taste, and not all about flashiness like it is in the west. What's shown here is "crafted experiences" for foreigners and not very authentic. One thing you can do is find a 2rd tier train station, not Tokyo or Shinjuku, and just check out all the shops around every side of the train station and alley/shopping streets. If you see a line, it's a good place to stop by. For every day travel, even $50 a day will get you pretty far these days.
Love this!
When did you guys film this? Curious about the time of the year… Great video. Thanks.
We filmed in early June!
Love it!
Great post! Thank you
Where did you stay in Hakone? Curious to know. Looks gorgeous. I travel to Japan for a two week holiday end of October this year.
Would love to know the name of the ryokan in Hakone. Awesome video! Wish I had seen it prior to me going there just 2 weeks ago
Would love to know the name of it too!
Kinnotake Tonosawa
If you spend $1,000USD (148,000JPY) per day (even for a family of four), you're NOT getting the Japanese experience...you're getting the GAIGOKUJIN (foreigner) "experience". I.e. inflated costs so as to separate your cash from your wallet/bank-account, whilst not actually getting a true Japanese experience.
Btw Gaijin won't even understand/appreciate what they're eating at the highest level. The "lower" level plebs (i.e. $100USD/day) will appreciate.
Maya will agree.
Great vid. Liked and SUBSCRIBED.
You could live there for a couple of decades and still not see the “true” Japan, much less after spending a couple of days in Tokyo (which is NOT representative of the entirety of Japan smh) (no Nicky, staying overnight at a Hakone ryokan doesn’t constitute a Tokyo breakfast). It’s a stopover vid, not an initiation. Nobody who could afford a $1,000/day expenses trip to Tokyo would in their right minds be using a TPG video like this to guide their itinerary.
> Btw Gaijin won't even understand/appreciate what they're eating at the highest level
Oh brother, you’re sounding like one of those people who venerate nigirizushi as some kind of ancient Japanese foodstuff that bears witness to a thousand years of precision craftsmanship, rather than the not-even-two hundred year old fast food served from stalls and carts that it originally was. Forget gaijin, half of the native Japanese at invite-only places (or even the high-end French/European restaurants in town) don’t “appreciate what they’re eating”; they’re there because someone was trying to show them a good time and/or impress them in the hopes of getting laid.
I agree - this comment is totally on point! Taking foreigners, especially non-Asians, to super upscale places is a complete waste of money. They generally lack the palate experience and cultural awareness to appreciate the subtle differences when it comes to upscale differentiation. At the current exchange rate, $100 USD/day is way more than you need to spend.
Bit cheeky to lump the cost of the ryokan stay into “breakfast”, especially considering that it’s at least 1.5 hours* away from Tokyo, the ostensible subject of the video…
* 50-60 minute car/bus ride to the train station, then a 30-40 minute shinkansen ride (which itself was a healthy chunk of the budget)
6:22 These are so cute!
Of course Nicky has the higher budget 🙄 Over 90% of the videos he’s in he’s always the one with the higher budget or business class/first class flights.
Because he is the main man!
It is his show sooooo
With the exchange rate of the yen currently the British pound and the US are very strong and so your money goes a lot further right now! Just be prepared to pay with cash in a lot of places
What camera does everyone use for vlogging?
Sony ZV-1
Lol a Swedish waffle for breakfast in Tokyo
whats the point of spending a salary in one day? or two even
Marc gets bonus points for Disposable Camera 📸
Been travelling around Japan for 21 days, seen ton of school kids and elderly use these film cameras!!
wow that hotel is so expensive almost half the budget.
