Part 1: • Teddy Riley on Growing...
--------
In this clip, legendary record producer/songwriter Teddy Riley looks back on what life was like for the members of Guy after the success of their self-titled debut album and first tour. He reveals that they were illegally squatting in houses that their former executive producer, Gene Griffin procured for them. As the discussion moves along, Riley also shares with the VladTV viewers that Aaron Hall initially blamed him for the group's financial troubles, alleging that he had been colluding with Gene Griffin, but he wasn't. Then, Riley said that Griffin had been conducting business in an unprofessional manner until their road manager, Frank, informed them about what was really going on. Unfortunately, Frank began to extort Riley. So, Riley enlisted the help of his old friends Alpo and Rich Porter for assurance. Lastly, Riley talks about the moment when he and his mother finally reached a boiling point with Frank over the money that he was owed for making so many hit records.
I met Teddy Riley at a movie theater in Virginia Beach, during a matinee at the concession stand. This had to be 2000, I was in the Navy. Cool dude. Just a really pleasant vibe. He could tell me and my girlfriend recognized him. Dude was clean. I mean immaculate. His attention to detail in his appearance was exceptional. Crazy thing is 22 years ago he looked just like he does in this interview.
lies
@@mauricewinliams9779 Teddy had a house in VA Beach back in the day off Indian River. Man these celebrities are not alien clown they knew and know people that are not in the industry
He looks like an old ass man that died his beard. He looked like that 22 years ago
So what
@maurice Shutup child
Teddy a quiet cool gangsta. Cats like him be the guys you DON'T cross.
HELLA FACTS BRO
Yeah ight 🤣
Stop it !!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That "He was broke" by Teddy Riley killed me 😂
I love how much his Mother was involved in his path. When your Mom says someone's the devil you better listen!
Listening at him rt now🤣
She was willing to go back to the projects! He was the devil for her to say that. Listen to your Mama.
Facts 💯
These stories are amazing Teddy shedding a lot of light on things…
Nah! Just tell us how they robbed you! Stop trying to sugarcoat things! Evasive! You couldn’t talk to your band mates about it? Couldn’t get a lawyer? This sounds like some bullshit!
Soon as he said ALPO GLAD almost pissed his pants.
he bust off in his pants lol
This guy is Legendary, love that he called VA home for years
VA ALL DAY
Lol I thought he was from VA practically my whole life until a few years ago i found out he was from Harlem 😅
Getting 10,000 off of 800,000 then splitting the 10,000 and can’t get a 1,000 worth of furniture is crazy 😳
Your breath is crazy too
Madness
The music industry is shady. Teddy (The Harlem World Music Godfather) received only $40, 000 out of $800,000 from producing Boy George. OMG
Vlad gotta be loving the Rich Porter, AZ, Alpo connection.
They need to do an Unsung special on this. Teddy Riley 🔥🔥🔥
Vlad is getting some interviews and stories that most of us have never heard before. Big up to Vlad for chronicling all this even after we are all dead and gone.
Calm tf down
@@morriskode you a hater bro lol
Real talk tho, simple research could give u what u looking for. If folks would read and research they could be doing this shit one day. All vlad does is look shit up or use previous guests to try and piece it together.
😂😂 he said calm tf down
Bro shut tf up.. catching an adrenaline over a damn interview
Rest well Rich Porter 🙏🏽💯
“I was quickly thinking murder.” -Alpo RIP PO
🤣🤣🤣 I read that in his voice
LMFAO! 😭 A lot of people say Po be lying but he do tell the truth about some stuff maybe exaggerate a lil bit… lmbo!
@@YoungShorts9000 That Feds your interview is a classic. “Domencio was a situation where he really disrespected himself and he disrespected other ppl and that’s why that happened to him. He thought he was tougher than what he really was.”😂😂
@@billiejean6678 Rip to the adrenaline junkie.💯😅😂
😂😂😂
Alpo talked about that situation he helped Teddy out of.
It's bad how these talented brothers like Teddy Riley & young artist was beat out of royalties back in the day. It's still goes on with some artist today. Probably not as many artist getting beat like yester year.💯
I totally agree, it's sad👍✌
Teddy was like, "naw HE was broke." 🤣🤣
That shit killed me 😂😂😂
@@dwaynegittens2785 He said it so calm & quick too like don't get it twisted.🤣🤣
@@dwaynegittens2785 That's funny? Hmmm...
Teddy Riley is a 🐐 producer and the true definition of resilient
True indeed
These R&B singers got my gangster stories than the rappers do. Same life style just different regime of music.
Exactly.
This is why you needed street guys back in the day. The streets really carried a lot of weight. It's really true when they say that "they don't make them like that anymore":.
These same street guys are the same ones making you tube videos out of hourly extended stays talking about being robbed by their manager.
Vlad make sure he put Alpo name in this for click bait 😂😂😂
Dude got the sharpest line up in the game
Message board, I can remember this story he's telling like yesterday, everything he's saying is absolutely true. At the time, living here in Alabama, I loved him so much, I use to sit around wishing I could get my hands on him and sit him down and talk to him, to try and help him mentally get his life back on track. I had heard about Gene Griffin and the things he was doing. In fact, I knew something was fishy going on, because his name was on everything Teddy Riley did, and at the time I kind of felt like he was using Teddy's name to lace his pockets. I mean Gene's name was on "everything" Teddy did, it was insane. So when the demise of Guy started, my thoughts were, "this can't be true", these guys had the music world on it's knees and nothing or nobody could touch them. I thought Aaron Hall was losing his mind trying to go solo. Guy walked away from literally millions on top of millions of dollars dealing with Gene, it was so sad. And to this day, the hip hop industry continues to mimic Teddy Riley's style, yet he receives no royalties from it. From Alecia Keys, Mary J Blige, Beyonce, etc, all using Teddy's style, and people don't even know it.
I had no clue Teddy Riley new all these people. This shit is a trip.
Teddy said" He was broke ' 😂😂
He was broke.. I felt that shit 💪🏽
i remeber alpo said that and he was happy that teddy went different route
Ah, the 5th element of Hip-Hop… extortion.
This was R&B though…but I get it

@@davonbrooks228 you’re absolutely correct there’s been a street element associated with the music industry forever…but the OP didn’t say “black music”
If he or she would’ve said “black music” it would’ve been different but they said “hip hop” and Guy wasn’t hip hop

Teddy: “He was broke!” 😂😂😂
bro teddy was the truth in that music/street game, was connected with the heavy weight street hustlers no question 🤫
Teddy was always the dopest producer- real talk
If anyone was wondering, the Boy George song Teddy worked on is "Don't Take My Mind On A Trip"
I love the honesty. Makes an amazing interview
I love me some Teddy Riley one of the best New jack swing era I miss it
Gene was the Suge Knight of RNB
Teddy said I wasn’t broke 😂
Teddy's story is a cautionary tale that has played out in reality too many damn times. ALWAYS read the contract ;)
Street dudes use to keep good dudes out the streets.
Damn alpo was in Cali as well that dude was everywhere
"He was broke"-Teddy Riley
LOL No it's like this...
HE...was broke
😂😂😂 I love him
Great Interview
Teddy
Seems like a great guy
Can he talk about Alpo chasing after a half naked Keith Sweat for messing with his girl🤣
Teddy Riley produced Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" album, Michael paid him 150,000 dollars, Gene Griffin Teddy Riley's manager only gave Teddy 25,000 dollars out of the 150,000 dollars for his work with Michael Jackson.
Wow
For the love of 💰
Per song
Teddy was really that dude in Harlem r.i.p rich and po
The story Alpo told to Antione about Teddy and Gene Griffin situation in his F.E.D.S magazine interview was funny to me. lmbo! The audio is still on yt I believe.
What he say
@@christopherayettey4390 He was talking about killing Gene Griffin but his help was too strong for Teddy so he went about it the legal way lol
It's cool how many dynamic stories are intertwined. A lot of them come out of NYC. That's 27,000 people per square mile so, it makes sense that great people from different walks would cross paths.
Just like the MJG & 8Ball song says, "about 18 1/2 when I signed my worse contract! It's a shame so many artists and entertainers throughout history have been conned out of their royalties.

I'm an official Teddy Riley fanboy, yeah I said it, ain't no shame in my game & listening to all of this makes me so furious & disappointed. We keep talking about Don King like he was the poster boy for unscrupulous antics, man I wonder if Don would make the top 5 of the most diabolical manager & promoter & CEO. Teddy Riley needed Eric B in his corner.
This would make one hell of a movie

Same NWA story. Gotta be like Cube lol Everyone with the shake down tactics. It's a dirty game.
Got dang Teddy...crap!!!...But look at you now ..Gene is dead and broke but you are wealthy and alive...look at God...vengeance belongs to him....
Disheartening to hear black people do black people like that
This is so sickenly to hear I got to check out.
Black artists always talked about how “the man” would screw them in the music business. Funny how black record label owners, producers, and managers did the same thing.
“HE WAS BROKE” 😂
Harlem is down with Harlem through thick and thin , this is why Puffy has never been touched
thought he was from Mount Vernon
I think that has more to do with his net worth
True indeed, thats how it should have stayed. Teddy said Rich an Alpo wanted him to focus on his talent.
His bodyguard got it he can too

"he was broke"...;Lets be clear!!! lmao
Long live bankroll fresh it's a dirty game. 💯👊🏾
This is the truth this is also why Tim Gatling left as well
Tim & Aaron got into it. Also Tim wouldn't sign the contract that Gene gave him. Smartest move he ever made.
It’s crazy he went to school with Rich Porter.
Wow...Glad...Unique Interview...Teddy seems somewhat melancholy...And now I know why...I will always love my momma...Teds got a good one...He could have been lost to the streets...cause he knew all the hitters...and they loved him...the stuff movies are made of...
That is why it is called “Show BUSINESS “!! You have to be up on the Business part!! The sad part is this is nothing new. Artist get exploited all day, every day……
Shawty-lo head ass. Had me tripping for a second.
😂😂😂
Gene Griffin was Suge Knight before Suge Knight !!😆
Facts!! LOL
80s Era 💯💯🔥🔥🔥
That's crazy, so Gene was an 'official' member of Guy getting paid. And, the production company's name was called Gene Riley (GR) Productions...C'mon Teddy. What a scam artist, can someone really be that blind? if Teddy was getting $10K a song in the beginning, at some point the price of brick had to go up...and he was still ok with just $10K? Crazy!
10k back then was money
Man, this was late '80s/early 90s. Teddy was an artist and just worried about his producing. He wasn't into the paperwork and what not. Gene is a crook and took advantage of that and Teddy trusted him. That's it. He wasn't asking questions. He was just taking whatever Gene gave him. Keep in mind, Gene was his "godfather" as well.
You completely misunderstand the gangster business practices Gene Griffin was infamous for. He basically owned Guy and Teddy's assets so he paid him what he felt like and knew Teddy was stuck. It's not math it's leverage, financial & physical.
@@ODK321another Birdman and Wayne situation but it was the 90s

Sad part teddy was young, he was 21 in 88’ and a musical genius and just wanted to make music in the 80’s era and hoping his so called godfather gene griffin was going to take care of the business part for him but dude was straight up robbing him and all the artist under GR productions, evil shit
