Thanks mate. I have just started getting into all of this digital media stuff and the container/codecs topic was becoming a bit of a head scratcher. This video of yours is concise and to the point. It has cleared up a lot in a short time and set me back on track. Thanks again.
Thank you for this easy to understand and informative video. I am currently in a Media Distribution class and this video helped me to have a new understanding of what encoding is all about. Appreciate it!
A very informative and easy to understand video. I didn't know anything about the subject before, but this gave me a great starting point. Thanks! You obviously put a lot of time on this.
Have seen you elsewhere--so your logo is memorable, and your videos are really very good. You are knowledgeable, and this is so well-researched and well done.
that question makes me feel like i completely failed in explaining things in my video. the container has very little to do w/ the size/quality of a video. i said x264 (h.264) is what looks best on youtube and i said that MP4 is the common container for it. i didn't say it was the only container for it. u can encode in h.264 and put it in a wmv format if u like and it could look better, but if they both have the h.264 core, then they'll look the same on youtube.
thnx for the feedback. i consider codecs, augmented reality, and fixing BSOD's very useful information...but targeted more towards IT and programmers. in ur opinion, what would not be crap content?
you are great .. I love your style and how easy you show us what is for what :) im not expert but seeing this vid i got so many questions answered easy way ..and i thnk you for that also would like to say im more then happy that i found your channel and subbed to it cuz you already helped me much with converting to HD for youtube and such thing 5* keep up the good work PEACE
Used to convert & encode old movie vhs, vcds, dvds for safekeeping but with remastered HD version releases it's a bit redundant, few titles may not but most are.
I am working on a project to distribute encoding a file over multiple computers. Runs on java, and uses ffmpeg as its backend. Compatable with most formats.
Thank you so much for posting this. I feel so informed. My only question would be why can't they just make one video file format to use for every system. Its just harder to use all those formats. So if there was only one, then of course it would be easier to use for every system.
I've had some really good success encoding x264 in the .avi container. It uploads to youtube extremely well. But I am definitely going to have to play around some more with encoding.
Thanks mate this was really useful and informative. I think I'll need to watch this a couple of times to get it all but thanks. (I guess it also means more views for you)
you are mistaken. not only is megabits is correctly abbreviated as mbits, but i'm not even sure "millibits" is an actual unit of measurement. for information on measuring bits, please refer to the "megabit" wikipedia page.
question? My camera shoots video at about 42mbps. Are there codecs that will compress that high or higher. And are there different guality choices if you want to burn a dvd
thanks for the fantastic vid dude 1 thing for me though. i use gom player and others but every time i put on a download or film it stops for about 2 secs or longer then gos fast to chatch up? any idas on what to do dude. thanks., iv tryed speeding it up a little.
AVI can contain some metadata, like title, author and copyright. Same as WAV. In the order Mov should have come first, as it became the MP4 container later, and is still infused with proprietary Apple stuff.
Dvd recorder format (Mpeg PS I think) absolutely rocks for CZcams uploads. So if you can get a vid you have to Dvd format you'll be ok from my experience.
This is exactly the kind of video I'm looking for right now. I loved everything exept that "drop" noise everytime a topic popped up. It is too "bassy".
i could really do with you help. i am buying a new HD 16mp camera but its video formats are only JPEG and AVI will i be able to upload the film to youtube. and is their anything i can do to make this so, i could really use your help as i have asked alot of people so far and non of then have replied back. please help. THANKS
Yea, today it's all done automatically by apks and media players contain all kinds of codecs in app, so you don't actually choose the codecs and most of them are just wrapped in the media containers which might in future might video files a bit bigger but covers all bases and might make it simple for ai powered video players to read the video properly.
There's a lot of incorrect information in this video. First of all, ffmpeg is an encoder / AV processing application. It is NOT a codec! Xvid / DivX are both implementations of MPEG-4 ASP, and are playable on nearly any operating system, thanks to ffmpeg's libavcodec (used by VLC, ffdshow, etc) x264 is an MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) encoder. It delivers better quality than Xvid/DivX at any data rate. Also, don't composite progressive video on top of interlaced video. It makes you look incompetent.
Watching this in 2020 i get major 2000's vibes !
Me too
They must have solved every problem in 2020
Amazing how even after 14 years your video is still intuitive to watch!
i love whoever the narrator is, love his voice, accent and styles of explanation.

As a teacher who has to teach this for the first time this year (a small part of a much bigger subject) this is amazing. Thanks!
Thanks! This video has one of the highest usefulness/size ratios on CZcams!

no. bytes is for storage. bits is for streaming and data transfer.

xvid is ftw!
