TOMAS - Cut and cover tunnel technology

  • The TOMAS Surface Tunneling technology is based on three innovations:
    1. Building a semi circular tunnel from the surface in soils with high water table without draining or pumping out the sub-surface water.
    2. Removing the soil mixed with water within a half round shield with standard cutter dredging technology adapted for this application.
    3. Using standard segmented tunneling sections to shape the tunnel, but fixing these segments with post-tensioning under a continuous precast or cast on site concrete beam fixed and supported or held by rakes of piles.
    Benefits of this technology are:
    - Short construction time because of fast building (50-80 mtrs/day)
    - Low investment cost
    - Limited construction space required
    - No ground dewatering required
    - Soil removal by dredging is the cheapest way of moving soil
    - Material transport can be done through finished tunnel
    - Minimum impact on the environment
    - Use is made of well-known technologies
    - Innovative construction method with international potential

    If you have the space to build this, you can do it overground, you need underground when you go under cities....

    • @takumi2023
      @takumi2023 Před 8 lety

      I was thinking the same thing.... did they think this through when designing the machine? if they needed to make the roads below grounds it's because the there's already an infrastructure above ground. if they needed a structure above ground why make a trench just to build a road... the only thing I can see that's a benefits is the noise pollution reduction this didn't help if there's landslides or floods I wonder if this can be used in the Midwest where tornados can rip off houses... at least this way the roads will never be blocked except in case of accidents.

    • @Lyron7
      @Lyron7 Před 8 lety

      Exactly! Plus, I don't know if this falls under the tunnel definition... It's more like a trench?

    The biggest problem here is the high watertable.
    And it's not shown how they solved that problem.....
    Where the digging takes place, the water table is not shown, but don't worry its gonna be a dredging pool.
    In reality this means they are placing the prefab concrete elements under water.....
    This will never work.
    Or behind the cutter a bulkhead can be placed, but water will flow in directly where they are placing the concrete elements.
    You need to stabilise the soil.
    This can only be done by lowering the watertable, which is not needed they said.
    Or by cementing or freezing the soil, very expensive.
    I don't see how this is gonna work in reality.

      @MakeMeThinkAgain Před 8 lety

      +Martijn martijn Right. No mention of pumps. Also, this seems to be "Cut and Cover" without any cover. And if you're at the surface, why not just drop in pre-fab segments rather than building the segments from smaller slabs? Even better, pour the segment at the back of the unit and then drop it into the hole once it cures... though that might take too long.

    The articulated arm at the front is overly complicated. Just use a standard tunneling rig like the kind they use to make actual tunnels for rail lines. Also, it seems like it would be far more efficient to just drop in the completed sections rather than building each segment from smaller segments. Also, we don't need to hear the name of this really stupid technology every ten fucking seconds!!!
