Chris, I've been singing my whole life, I've been in and out of voice lessons and have always been told I was great. I know I'm a good singer, however, vibrato was the missing link I never had. That small beautiful wavering was always out of reach. This video had me being able to reproduce vibrato, on purpose, after the first watch. Today is the second day going through it and I'm already feeling more in control of being able to turn it on and off. I hope you understand how much unlocking this means to some people. I feel like I will now be able to fully express the emotions of music, thank you so much and have a wonderful day.

By far the best vibrato lesson I've seen or done. I love the way Chris brings body awareness into his exercises so I can feel the necessary sensations at the extremes and then dial them back for something that sounds pleasing.

Really cool explanation Chris. I've been teaching singing for 15 years and vibrato speed is something that I personally find hard to control. Vibrato is a minefield. This was a really interesting approach. Thanks.

Ive been singing my whole life, i even took vocal lessons in highschool and my teacher complimented my vibrato. Im now in choir for the first time as a 22 year old freshman in university and i was told that i use a "fake" vibrato. I didnt know there was such a thing. Im now having a bit of a crisis trying to learn to sing with a real vibrato

I used to sing opera a lot and my trainer (a legit opera singer) told everyone NOT to learn fake vibrato (or the sheep technique, as she called it). When you have the right singing technique, you will be amazed to find out that vibrato is indeed not a technique. And surely enough, was I amazed!

I've been mostly using the tremolo technique to achieve the faster vibrato, (I just like the way the really fast vibrato sounds and I've been trying to figure out a way to speed mine up) but it's kind of inconsistent, when I can activate it. I thought it wasn't possible to speed up the laryngeal vibrato until I found this video and tried the techniques. It's not consistent either yet, but after continuing to practice these techniques, I can hear short spurts of the laryngeal vibrato that is much faster than I thought I was capable of. Thanks a ton for this video Chris.

I really appreciate this video Chris, as I have never been able to achieve a natural sounding unforced vibrato until I watched this video. The description and way you lead us to the feeling in the chest/abdomen region is helpful to pinpoint what you should be aiming for.
I managed to find a helpful shortcut for me to achieve pretty reliable vibrato thanks to this understanding of the mechanics. What I do is having a decent support of the note in the abdomen and diaphragm, when I want to hit the vibrato (and like you said it seems to really work when you change the pitch) I notice my belly goes out instead of up and in, and my chest drops a little and in, maybe slightly compressing. With this I can almost hit it on cue.
    Thanks so much man 🙏

I'm confused. I've heard people talking about and demonstrating vibrato as a natural oscillation that occurs when breath support, relaxation and pitch all work together correctly. Here you demonstrate vibrato as something done manually from the stomach. Unless I missed something? Which is correct? Or is it a matter of which technique the singer prefers or is capable of? Is "natural" vibrato a thing?

    • @chrisliepe

Wow, at :30 you can actually *see* the vibrato on his t-shirt, under his right arm (viewer’s left) near his rib cage. That’s insane. Does that come from diaphragm movement? I know when I do vibrato (or attempt it, to be more accurate) my larynx moves visibly, which I’ve heard is not a good sign. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen this visible movement near someone’s rib cage before. That’s impressive.

I already have natural vibrato that doesn’t originate in my diaphragm, I found this video because I’m having trouble loosening up my mixed voice enough to create natural vibrato and was hoping this would help but unless I’m really not understanding, this seems to be teaching how to manufacture a vibrato-ish sound with your diaphragm
