    I actually go to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and i'm a jazz drumset player in the jazz band there. I get to see Butch play a lot during the semester, mainly because I take drumset lessons from him and he also directed my jazz orchestra this past semester. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and one of the best jazz drummers of all time. Imagine getting to see stuff like in this video, but all the time. I'm truly blessed. Haha.

    I can recognize peripheral talent when I see it. Butch has the raw energy of Buddy and the musical sense of Morello. If you can't recognize that, you are only hurting your own developmental abilities.

    In September 1992 I had a gig in a restaurant in Albuquerque NM. Imagine my shock when Butch Miles was the drummer. Just me, Butch and a trumpet. I was so in awe of this incredible most elegant man I had ever met. He didn't even move his limbs when he played. A night I'll never forget!

    When I first saw Butch with the Basie band it was on TV and it wasn't just his drumming that caught my eye. I was struck by how dammed happy he always looked. Watching this video the same applies, every so often this huge smile appears, and his enjoyment makes me feel good. Great drummer.
    As to being a Rich clone you could argue that since Buddy went back to 1921, ie before big bands, then most drummers were Rich clones. Also if you had to be called a clone then who better than Berrnard Rich.

    Man, daddy-o, Butch's solo here is one of the all time best drum solos I've ever seen.
    All you kiddies who think Peart is so great, but you guys don't even know that guys like Butch and Donny Osborne are even alive.
    You can go to any major city in the country and find 25 -at least - bona fide Jazz drummers who are light years ahead of Peart, and Mr. Miles is one of, if not THEE best, drummer alive on the planet right now .
    Great touch, dynamics, power, ideas - he has it ALL ~

    Saw Butch with Bassie in Edmonton in the late '70s. The single best concert I've ever attended. Don't know what they thought of Edmonton, but it was a great night . . .

    • @jimbaritone6429
      @jimbaritone6429 Před 6 lety

      Brent Hudson, I was at the same concert. Still the best big band concert I've ever had the privilege to see. The very first big band charts I ever played were in Jr. High School, about 1970, and a lot were Basie band arrangements by people like Neal Hefti and Sammy Nestico. I got so hooked on playing sax, especially baritone, that I ended up making a career of it - and what a pleasure it was. I heard many great big bands over the years, and played many great arrangements, but for me, Count Basie & His Orchestra have a special place. His music, and his band, literally changed the path of my life in the early 1970's, and one of the most memorable moments was meeting The Count on the afternoon of that Edmonton concert. My then employer, bandleader Big Miller, was a longtime friend of Basie's and, knowing how much I liked the band, took me along to the rehearsal to meet Mr. Basie. Butch Miles had a great night that night, and as was so often the case, everybody in the band seemed to be enjoying themselves too - it wasn't just a job. Freddy Green once said something like "Bill Basie is the first guy to get to the gig, and the last one to leave it - not because he's worried about us showing up, but because he just loves playing with the band, and knowing the audience is enjoying it."

    This video encapsulates the incredible talent of Butch. His seemingly effortless playing, no matter how technically difficult, loud, or as fast (or a combination of all 3) as it was, was awe inspiring. I’ll miss being able to ask you questions and you always answer them…no matter how idiotic they may have been😅. God Bless You, Butch. I’ll see you on the other side🙏

    ...Talk about 'false endings' .......!!! -- Butch Miles is a most consummate big band drummer and is highly relaxing to listen to.... As MarkR1957 comments below, Butch Miles played on the original Basie recording of Wind Machine, on the Pablo record label, well before Buddy Rich got his teeth into it..... Basie's big band version however is superior in many ways....

    @MarkR1957 An absolute disgrace, yes! Back when they did the first one I remember lots of young people going "Wow! Check out Louie Bellson!". Cathy could still run a decent business if at least she cared to feature ONE of the drummers that you mentioned every year, so that the wonderful legacy of Swing music that her father contributed to and, literally fought for, stood strong. But she's turned it into a variety show, such a shame.
