    This is indeed a major update. It is exactly what I have wanted to do in Photo AI, but could not figure out how to do; and that is to do selective noise removal and sharpening. I had been waiting(and hoping) you would do a tutorial like this and voila you came through!!!!! Thank you Dave for this excellent tutorial.

    I would like to see a magnetic feather brush, when you choose the subject, or just the back round from the subject, presently it doesn't get it exactly, as you either need to take away or add to the selection. In LR when you select auto mask with the brush, it acts like a magnet keeping you from spilling over to area's you dont want the adjustment, so long as you keep the inner circle in the area of the adjustment to make an exact adjustment With the LR brush there is a inner and outer circle, the outer circle is the feather. Another fine tut Dave, thank you!!

    If you check the forum you will see a huge number of people are very unhappy with this update, me included. Lingyu, the Topaz Product Specialist is advising us to roll back to 2.3.2 until the developers can address the issues raised. For my part, trying to edit RW2 raw photos from my Lumix TZ200 results in version 2.4.0 crashing every time. CR3 raw images from my Canon M50 work Ok. I have taken Lingyu's advice & rolled back.

    This update has made the Topaz more complex rather than simpler. Who performs color balance, cropping, and light adjustments in Topaz? Certainly not me. All of these tasks can be executed more effectively using Photoshop or Lightroom. Topaz should concentrate on its strengths, such as noise reduction and sharpening tools, and emphasize its high precision in those areas. They still haven't fixed the tint that appears after image processing. Most of the time, there is a noticeable yellow or magenta tint after denoising.

    Thanks, Dave, for bringing this to us. I just installed the new version and started working with it. I don't think the results have improved much, but the process is getting way better. To be able to segment parts for separate treatment is such an advancement. I had great misgivings when they abandoned the individual products, but now I am thrilled with this new product. I am so grateful to have it in my toolbag.

  • @jhmnieuwenhuis
    @jhmnieuwenhuis Před 2 měsíci +4

    As I mentioned before topaz should stick to denoise and sharpen. Editing the image in other ways should be left to programs like Lightroom and Photoshop.

      Agree. I was about to say the same thing when I noticed your comment. PS and LR have much more sophisticated controls for color and lighting. I’m guessing that Topaz feels compelled to add these features for those who want to use the app as a standalone. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but, hey, I’m just a plebe photographer.

    Good day Dave, it's always a pleasure to listen to you, I always find your tutorials useful, interesting and easy to understand.
    The improvements made so far by Topaz Photo AI are evident and I think they deserve attention.
    However, I wanted to point out the impressive slowness of the plugin that allows you to bring the image from within Lightroom to Topaz Photo AI, despite my "super Mac", the times are decidedly long!
    Good work:-)

    Your Topaz update videos are so useful. I would be in the dark regarding changes to the program. I do hope they are paying you for all this work as it's premium knowledge that must help their sales. This is a major upgrade and I agree with you toggling on and off each layer would be very useful and perhaps adding a slider to increase or decrease the effect would be useful. Perhaps hovering over each layer to reveal the mask used would also be helpful. This Topaz Ai is becoming the go-to program before any postprocessing starts. A big thank you for the update. 😀

    I like Topaz AI and I use it as a plugin with Capture One, usually to remove noise on images that need a bit of noise reduction which I can’t be bothered fussing around with sliders in Capture One. For serious noise reduction though DXOPureRaw3 is in a different league than Topaz. If they could improve on that, I’d be very happy because PR3 doesn’t work as a plugin on C1

    In my opinion, this update is the worst Topaz has delivered for PhotoAI so far. Every time I used the Sharpen function I have to set the mask to "All". Also the sharpening result in the previous version was much better than in 2.4.0. As you can see in the appropirate the forum a huge number of people are very unhappy with this update. Topaz should indicate where they are heading with Photo Ai if they want people to pay for new subscriptions. If they want to make it a full editing suite say so even if it will be in steps. As many use other editing apps, Photo Ai was fine where it was- even a few versions back. The overlap seems to continue in some regards. But to be fair I am only a hobbyist and don’t do much editing anyway. Photo Ai and LrC is about it. I’m sure I could do more in each and even photoshop but happy with what I’m doing. Thanks for the video Dave.

    So interesting update. Seems like some good stuff and some stuff I'd have dome in LR. So this program is growing which can cause issues that I guess some are seeing? I'm sure they'll get worked out so no snark from me. But it seems it's time for a renewal. $199.00 Seems like it was $99 last time? Anyway I'll have to consider this a bit and maybe go back and see if Lightroom Denoise and paying more attention to sharpening in LR will be "good enough" Plus I can still use 2.3 whatever. Now I don't begrudge a software company making money , they need that to continue with product improvements. I'm trying to be more careful with $. ( says the guy waiting anxiously for the new Z6III :)😁 ). Thanks for the vid Dave

When I bring the photo into AI, about 15% of the bottom is getting cropped and the photo is ruined because the splash is cut off.

    Elements gets worse every new update so I'm desperate to get away from it but other graphic apps on the Mac just don't seem as friendly as Elements.

    @stevenmeisel4288 Před 2 měsíci +5

    Horrible, just horrible update. After 15 minutes of frustration I uninstalled this version and reverted to version 2.3.2. I, like I bet most users, use this product for 3 reasons and 3 reasons only: remove noise, sharpen, and occasionally upscale. Period. I, like most people, use auto pilot. But I find that in bird photography, the software had a tendency to over sharpen. And, especially with a busy background, the software gets the subject wrong. Before this update, no problem. I could hover over the image to see what the software has selected. If I need to modify it, there was a ready button to click to access the masking tools and brushes. So to modify sharpening before this update I would simply click a few buttons, modify the mask, and adjust the sharpening intensity slider.
    With this new update everything is buried within the Add Enhancement section even if I use auto pilot. Tons more clicks to get to what I need and nothing is placed intuitively. Even something as common sense as the placement of the dialog box is crazy. It defaults to covering the image and you have to drag it somewhere else. Yes it’s easy to drag but who wants it superimposed on the image in the first place?
    In the prior version, upscaling after cropping was brilliant. I’d crop the image and the software automatically decided if upscaling was helpful and applied auto settings. Not anymore. Now it’s an extra manual step that even displays the resolution incorrectly! (1x of upscaling shows my original pixel size but I’m told by tech support that 1x basically does nothing even after the image has been severely cropped.)
    There may be some photographers who want to spend tons of time in a secondary software program tweaking sliders then revering to their primary editing software to edit some more. But those are a small minority. For most of us, we want a product like Topaz to Denoise, sharpen, and if needed upscale. Period. Simply and quickly so we can move on to our editing software.
    I feel that Topaz has seriously lost its way. It is trying to become a photo editing program but it is light years behind Photoshop or Capture One or Luminar or the others. Until now, Photo AI has excelled in its simplicity and superb results. But by adding all of this complexity, it has stepped on its own feet. If this continues, I may need to seriously consider changing to DXO.
    Dave: I have long appreciated your tutorials on these products. But for once it would be helpful not to gush over every update as an amazing world changer and offer honest, critical feedback.

      @@tonyblake8841 thanks. I have a very hard time identifying many use cases where I want to denoise different parts of an image differently or to sharpen different parts of an image at different levels. In the rare cases that this would be useful, Topaz could add an option to reapply a change, much like Luminar does. But making the workflow for the vast bulk of situations more difficult in order to accommodate the rare use case is poorly thought out.

    The object removal AI disappeared?

      No, it is still here. When you choose the Remove enhancement: Change the brush to Object Select and you should be good to go.

      Thank you for your prompt response. While it is there, where I tried to use it in tiff file, it collapse. I think Topaz had not taken care of this. The previous version works just fine.

    I have used Topaz products for years and years and I think I'm done with them.... these updates over the years will end up costing you thousands of dollars... its not like Adobe charging you each month... Topaz just updates and changes constantly and they charge for those updates... so its not any different than Adobe .... done with Topaz... no more money for updates...

    • @1947dave
      @1947dave Před 2 měsíci +1

      Misleading. Renewal for upgrades to Photo AI is at most once a year, currently costs $99 and you don't have to upgrade (or pay that fee) unless you want the new features, as it continues to work anyway (unlike Adobe). That's $8.25 a month, far less than Photoshop. The latest upgrade to 2.4.0 covered by this video is best ignored for most people until Topaz fix the worst of the problems reported in their forum. V. 2.3.2 is still available to download for anyone who did upgrade and doesn't like 2.4.0.
