  • Hazel started knitting Fair Isle about 12 years before Janette was born. Here they speak about how they started, what other people were knitting at that time, and how practices have changed over the years.
Shetland Dialect to English translation available - Janette and Hazel speak with a beautiful Shetland accent using lots of Shetland words. They have provided subtitles in English for you just in case you don't catch all of their words. You need to click subtitles on at the bottom of the screen to see them.

Hazel, you will never know the gift you gave me when you kindly put a video of yourself purling on youtube. You turned me loose into a whole new world. I could barely make a stitch then, and now I'm knitting Shetland lace. I'm not saying its easy, but I can do it. I've done Fair Isle and I've done ganseys, and some cabling, but it all started with that foundation of basic stitches done well and done fast.

I love knitting Fairisle. My granny taught me but we are not Scottish but Welsh. It’s a lovely hobby. People who have never learned to knit are missing out so much. I am envious of the Scottish knitting culture though and have loved every minute of this podcast. XAngela

Ooh when she brought out the scissors and started cutting into it like that... terrifying for me who's only ever knitted with cotton! But the prospect of not weaving any ends in is tempting.

Thank you both for the opportunity to hear and see your program. The colour selections are so helpful and all the examples lovely. Myself and 5 others were to have classes with both of you and Elizabeth Johnston in September. It as you know.... At this time there are 3 or 4 really hoping to make the tour next year. I’m so looking forward to next September! Terry Prehara from Knutsford BC Canada 🇨🇦

thank you for sharing your experiences of fair isle. I loved the comments on how some colour arrangements might be frowned on. It made me smile. I am sure that would be me with the wrong colour choices.
