  • In this video I fix up all the electrical gremlins from last week, align the engine more accurately then go for a short sea trial. There was still a noticeable vibration in the gearbox so I dropped the boat off with Mick at Coast Marine. Looks like we are going to need to re-jig the way the gearbox and the propshaft attach, which will require pulling the boat out of the water, but I'm very keen to get this problem sorted properly so the boat will be reliable for years to come.

    Thank you Stu for seeing this project through. Watching your videos have become the highlight of many of our days and weeks as we are stuck at home. You have done much more than rebuild a boat. You have taken our minds off the serious issues the world faces and given us hope that one day our lives will return to some sort of normalcy. Hi Stu! Arch from Maryland USA. It's 1am here on the East coast of USA. When you were using the socket and feeler gauge you were getting close. I have used many methods including laser alignment tools that would show you all 4 feet positions and which direction for them to go. If the Prop shaft and drive hubs can be bought close, then one checks 4 - 90 positions for clearance. The faces have to be clean machined surfaces to measure. The wobble in the gear drive appears to be up and down misalignment. Hopefully your expert will make it right. Congrats on a hard fought win!

    After a rehabbing an older boat I eagerly took the family for a weekend on the water. My father has many years of marine mechanic work behind him was aboard. I was very nervous about slight misses of the older Suzuki DT115 and this and that. He started laughing....pointing out all noises and vibrations sound/feel worse the further from home you are. He also pointed out that it is a long walk home from anywhere on the water. Wisdom of those that have been there before.

    Alignments are tough on a machine with resilient mountings. When you do it again there is an order which must be followed otherwise you are just chasing your tail. Horizontal angular first, then horizontal alignment. Then you can sort the vertical axis which is easier. Also clean up the gearbox flange, you would be surprised how thick paint can be. As experience I used to align air con and refrigeration compressor motor sets so have done many of these. Good work though, keep it up

Amazing how just 5 or 10 thousandths can make such a big difference! Your getting there, no huge problems. 20 psi on a hot Detroit is good. We ran one for 2 years with only 10 psi before finally rebuilding it! Good luck on the rest of it!

    The prop alignment bit was fascinating! I know it's so important as I used to teach English to Wartsila engineers in Finland, and mating a big diesel to an ABB generator on the same chassis was critical. On the lighter side, a friend of mine has a Dutch barge, powered by an old bus engine joined to the prop shaft with a universal joint! As for me, I have a hydraulic drive, so the only connection with the prop is via hydraulic pipes :-)

    @steelwheelsminnesota Před 4 lety +1

    Good day mate.
    After you dial in the run-out around the coupler, slide the prop shaft down and mount your indicator so the needle is on the face of coupler. Dial that in too. Remember that adjusting this run-out will affect the run out on the o.d. so work in halves until you're very close on both.
    Free the top nuts of the engine mount studs before starting so that you're not forcing the block or mounts to twist. Also, remembering that when adjusting the horizontal axis the mount you are not moving becomes a fulcrum for the engine to pivot on, and measuring the distance between mounts and cross multiplying the error/span by x/mount spacing will allow you to calculate an exact adjustment and get you very close first time.
    Anyway, indicating flange and face will ensure the two axes are concentric, not just at the point of the flange but along their axes of rotation. (Think of two lines and the coupler is the point at which they pivot)

  • @nuffsaid7952
    @nuffsaid7952 Před 4 lety +8

    Stu, when doing coupling and shaft alignments, both should be rotated together to ensure that any runout of the machining of the od of the coupling, corrosion etc don’t give false readings. Basic alignment 101.

    • @malachy1847
      @malachy1847 Před 4 lety +1

      Cleaning off the Paint and cleaning same with emery cloth would have brought up that machined surface so clocking around the static machined coupling would have had the a very similar effect, as same would have been machined true and concentric to fit the crankshaft, "Needs Must" sometimes... twas a great effort, anyhow it's now in a Maritime Hospital under the care of a good surgeon we are all waiting for a diagnosis, i thinking that their may be the likes of larger more agricultural engine pads to be fitted might help and same could relieve the wobbling which is currently at play...anyhow we shall have to wait and see seriously looking forward to your next Upload, Great Work and congratulations Stu, after same one would need a case of "Cooper Ale" as required medicine.

    • @nuffsaid7952
      @nuffsaid7952 Před 4 lety +2

      malachy1847 as I advised above, both coupling flanges should be rotated together so that the readings are taken on the same exact surfaces at each point. This is basic alignment procedure. While it is possible to get the alignment close by turning only 1 flange, is is far from accurate. For the novices, there is the mechanical engineering bible that is a great guide for both novices and also those that wish to refresh their memory.
      You’ve done a great job Stu, don’t take my post as criticism, I’m just trying to help with my personal experience of over 40 years.

      We had several dump trucks with them and a wheel loader with a 4-71. The wheel loader came out of a Quarry and they had run it for years with a straight pipe, no muffler.
      It ran fine but first thing I did was put a muffler on it. You could here it working from a mile away.

    good job on aligning the shaft.
    I would suggest that before putting the dial gauge on the motor flange that the flange is dressed clean first as the paint thickness or it being originally out of round may throw your measurements out.
    For the uninitiated, to dress the flange, just start the motor with the tail shaft disconnected and put it into gear. on the spinning flange hold a file to it propped against a packer and gentle smooth off the surface. common sense is needed but dressing is essential.

    • @carlthor91
      @carlthor91 Před 4 lety

      Also, the drive damper. What is the spec. on it, for bolt anchor location deviation from the common center? That or a warped flange, trans output or shaft coupling (hopefully), or the shaft needing straightening.
      Cheers all, stay safe

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  Před 4 lety

      Yes, I did wonder how much the paint would be affecting the dial gauge. It certainly got the alignment more accurate but dressing the surface makes perfect sense.

    Isn't it the shafts that need to be in alignment, rather than the perimeter of the flanges? They might not have been machined round and concentric? I think shaft alignment is an entire specialty unto itself in some trades.
    I'm curious about your friend's verdict, too. When the dial indicator comes out, things are getting quite fussy. Chasing perfect is a losing battle....

      @@davidthompson6099 please clarify what you mean....

    • @huub8
      @huub8 Před 4 lety +1

      @@1oldteck I presume he means that you want to read the varying orientation/offset between shaft and gearbox flange. In a perfect world, you could just keep one stationary, but this assumes that the surface of the flange perfect. Of course, it won't be, and so you read the offset + any (varying) deviations from the assumed perfect surface if you drag the indicater across a stationary flange.

    • @davidthompson6099
      @davidthompson6099 Před 4 lety +3

      @@1oldteck you need to turn the shaft, and the gearbox flange at the same time to get the correct reading. Otherwise things like paint, dings in the metal or it just plain not being perfectly round will affect the readings of the dial indicator. For best measurement, the gearbox should be warm from running as well as heat expansion will move things around too.
