LNER Peppercorn Class A1 No. 60163 Tornado is a 4-6-2 steam locomotive completed in 2008 to an original design by Arthur Peppercorn. It is the first new build British mainline steam locomotive since 1960, and the only Peppercorn Class A1 in existence after the original batch were scrapped. In 2017, Tornado became the first steam locomotive to officially reach 100 mph on British tracks in over 50 years.

The cottages at 2.30 are more or less unique to Crewe: a railway "village" of workers' housing. There was no town before the junction and works. Like those at Derby and Swindon, its layout and the style are sharply different from the standard spec housing of the later 19th century.

Tornado was built by public subscription - thousands of ordinary people formed a charitable trust and contributed money (in large and small amounts) to build a new A1. Unlike a lot of classes of British express steam locomotives, the original A1s were all scrapped and none survived into preservation. She runs regularly on the main line, hauling rail tours (I'm booked on a trip behind her in early December). Good to see you've become a rail enthusiast, Charlie.

@26:00 I always wanted a model train set as a lad. My dream was to work in the caboose of a train however they did away with cabooses by the mid 1980's. I'm Charlie's age yet still I have a love of trains, train tracks and the nostalgia of it all. Especially here in the US where we have thousands of miles of abandoned train tracks that are always an adventure to walk on. Great stuff, Charlie.
