Few people have said it already, I’ll say it again. A renesis NC would be crazy. Lightweight high-revving, better weight distribution.
NC platform feels like it’s the right place for that engine
The Rx8 is based off the NC anyway so it would work out great!
My complete Goodwin setup is a touch quieter, but I'm running the cat mid-pipe. My wife still announces her arrival home by revving the motor though. She enjoys the sound especially with the top down.
The exhaust headers are on sale from Holly right now for $350! Just bought a set for my NC. Hope it turns out well like yours.
The Super Q sound really shines with a header. Sucks to live in CA 😭
NC is the best Miata 💯 I'm on my third NC2 PRHT, really love them. Current 2011 SE has Goodwin header, FM midpipe and axle back (been discontinued for a while). It's like a quieter version of the one you put on this car, and if give you the pops and stuff. Fab9 N1 tune, coilovers... Thinking about putting a turbo on it this winter.
Yessss the NC content! I enjoyed my catted GWR exhaust back when mine was 4cyl, good choices!
Loving the NC content! I have a 2012 PRHT in black built very similar. Keep up the great work!
Awesome content!
Very nice! I just put in the Good-Win Racing street header with cat two weekes ago. Now I have that with the stock midpipe and GWR Super Q exhaust as well. I'll probably look for suspension next since sound is in a spot were I am happy.
Sounds sweet!
Thanks for making this video. I have a Goodwin Max Power 1.8 header and the Helmholz midpipe that I will be installing soon. I already have the Super Q muffler on it.
You should have spent $200 to get the header ceramic coated by Jet Hot. I did that with mine, and it’s supposed to reduce heat radiation by over 50%. Plus the eye candy factor! It’s a shame to cover it up with the stock heat shields, so I’m going to consider some options so that the ceramic coated header is visible from the open hood.
A great in depth head(er) vid...
old dudes on the NC...
trying to get my mom to subscribe....

Thanks for sharing. I love the Mazda content you guys do. Finding Mazda content it not easy. That's why I started my own channel.
Nice
Your video encouraged me to swap my header to the hooker header. I followed the hooker instruction and watched you guys video for visual during my install. Did you guys also get a check engine light for P0031?
I'm completing a built k24 swap in a 2011 NC this summer. I'd love to bring it to CT for some back to back testing and opinion video. Road trip! Love the content and maintaining motivation for projects. That being said...big turbo supra???
Sounds good! After a couple headers on my Protege I'm of the opinion the 4-1 vs 4-2-1 debate has a bit more nuance to it than blanket statements. I went from a "long tube" "tuned length" 4-1 with a 2.25" outlet, to a 4-2-1 with bigger primaries, but a smaller outlet (I think some odd size like 2.1") and gained power everywhere with a later roll-over of power and almost 10% more peak power to boot 🤷
It's probably beyond the scope of your intentions or budget, but would be cool to see some back-to-back dyno comparisons of various headers like Greg Peter's massive dyno sesh haha
nice video. The the superQ have the removable baffles installed for this video??
What about an rx8 engine in the nc? They are the same plateform, so maybe it wouldnt be so bad. Be nice to keep it all mazda.
nice work, what year is this car?
Mattchew!!!!!!
Tri header or 4-1.. that’s the question.. might go try for more midrange
Got a custom made axle back and it felt like it lost some power especially ow down.. how could this be?
I can’t seem to find that 3.0 Duratec kit for the NC. Is that rocketeer?
How hard was the install? Did you need to unbolt the engine mount, or was it just as easy to re-install as to remove the OEM header?
question:will this mod peak with a remapping of the ATF?
Go esslinger!
Renesis swap fixes the NC
(Especially since you dint want to risk gr8 daily outperforming the s2k 😉)
Actually doesn't sound bad in-cabin, has a bit of that Honda-ish reversion nose when free revving, but the 2.0 just isn't a great engine, i think you've done well all things considred 👍
Did u notice any performance gain? Ive heard that a setup like this would add around 20 horsepower, which would be quite alot on a 160hp car.
Shows you how restrictive the stock header is
What size wheels do you have 17x9 ?
Nice! All this thing is missing is a lightweight flywheel and a tune, im sure it would really wake the car up.
Where you guys at, it's been forever...
What about Series 2 - Street Ported Renesis swap? That would be a True battle between s2000 vs NC Miata R
How about give us a price breakdown of the exhaust.
I assume this system won’t pass emissions without cats???
I went with the PPE 1.75" long tube header on my NC. Not really anyone running that header.
2.8 Drag Cartel with carburetors
Would the Hooker header be suitable for a 2.5 duratech swap?
Yes
BBR makes an ITB kit but supposedly it’s very finicky.
New to moding cars here: if i had to choose which to do to get the most power, does switching the mid pipe out or switching the header give me more power?
Header, but the whole system has to breath otherwise you just have bottlenecks
@TheSlipAngle Right right. Makes sense. Ty💪
I don’t think a tri-y header is necessary with an engine with variable cam timing but that’s just a theory. Someone dynoing a couple headers back to back is really what’s needed to see what’s best. Another problem I see with a tri-y in this application it makes the primaries really short compared to goodwins 4-1 header.
My take is that with stock cams, there isn't enough overlap to generate a significant amount of scavenging no matter what the exhaust manifold looks like. This is why the larger diameter primaries tend to have better results - each cylinder is more or less independent of the others, so the larger / free-est flowing solution is the best.
Once you add cams, you need a lot more primary length, and pretty much every header on the market is terrible.
Please. 2.3L Ecoboost swap. I want one so bad.
I see you still haven’t fixed the battery bracket.
Hahahahaha it was filmed at the same time as the Track Dog Racing kit. It’s fixed now
For what its worth, the best flywheel i could find personally is the competition clutch chromoly steel flywheel. They have one thats 9.4lbs if i remember correctly. Thats the one i baught.
Cuz ACT doesn't make a prolite for the NC. only the street-lite which is heavier than the competition clutch one.
The only other flywheel thats lighter for the nc is the fidenza aluminum one. But i chose not to use it because i didn't like the idea that the ring gear could come apart potentially at all. Cuz id hate for that to happen wheh im 9hours away at tail of the dragon ;)
Lastly, i HIGHLY recommend getting ARP flywheel bolts. I have a suspicion that they will eliminate some of the chatter.
And for clutch, nothing beats the SUPER MIATA sport clutch. For the price, the ease of the pedal effort and the amount of torque it holds, the flyin miata clutch is the only one that comes close but has a heavier pedal effort.
Very impressed with the supermiata sport clutch. Id also recommend getting the puck style disc instead of the full face. Cuz having that extra grab would be nice. Churp gears ;)
I think the puck disc with the supermiata sport clutch would be the best as far as clutches go.
Loving the NC!
2.0l MZR FTW.
ALSO lol you can raise the rev limiter on the stock 2.0l to 7900-8k with no issues, all stock internals. The only time youd need stiffer valve springs is when you also add camshafts. Otherwise the stock 2.0l mzr is good for 8k RPM all day :)
❤
If Quinn doesn't believe me about the 8k rpm hehe take a look at the block design. She's strapped down like a k series with a full crank girdle plate. Oooo yea baby
I believe the weak link as far as the 2.0l goes for high rpm is possibly the timing belt. But that's if you're running a nice amount more than 8k rpm
I can forward you a link of a guy with a bone stock engine 2007 NC running laps around the nurburgring in 5th gear at the limiter for minutes at a time. And that thing is still kicking
Hearing people from the north say ‘my-ata’ makes me wince. Also, where LS ND video?
DIRECT BOLT IN RENESIS SWAP IT. Then both cars can be directly compared to each other on a level playing field. Call it project fire fart when you do it.
THIS IS THE WAY. Fix the power and the sound in one fell swoop!
The only thing a renesis should be swapped into is a trash bin.
After you guys entertain and blow all kinds of money on this MZ I’m hoping for a progression to an approachable 2.5 with a cam. No V6 or K24, that’s so wrong on this NC.
needs a washer fluid reservoir delete
Would suck when a bird shits on your windshield in the dead of summer
