    The Samyang 24mm T1.9 Full Frame Wide Angle Cine Auto Focus Lens for Sony E and other lenses in this kit solve a lot of problems. By offering great autofocus you can use these cinema lenses on a gimbal and filming yourself easily while keeping things in focus. They also have standard gears built into the VAF lenses so you can pull focus manually with a follow focus. These are great hybrid lenses if you need both AF and MF.

    As a wedding videographer, I rely primarily on auto-focus. But I love the idea of having a versatile lens that can conveniently do both auto and manual focus. Hopefully, there will be more of these "hybrid" options in the future from other companies.

      Yeah, AF is definitely really nice to have for weddings and events, that way you can keep up with the action and moving subjects!
      I bet other companies will follow suit and make manual style lenses with AF also.

    Hi, just got the manual focus adapter and installed the new firmware on my 24mm v-af samyang lens but for some reason I cannot get it to focus under 1 meter. It works well from aproximately 1m to infinity but not closer. Might there be specific settings I have to do in the lens manager? I'm using it on a sony FX3.

    It's interesting how the V-AF manual focus adapter is almost the same price as each lens. So if you were to purchase a 4 lens set it would cost you approximately $2500. Then if you want a manual focus adapter to stay on each lens, that is going to cost you around another $1600 for 4 of them. So you're looking at about $4100 for a 4 lens set. With 4k put down on a set I would be hesitant to purchase them without a 14mm.
    It would be just too much of a pain and waist of time to have to swap the V-AF manual focus adapter every time you want to do a lens swap if you only buy 1 adapter.
    Why the lenses don't just come with the V-AF adapter bolted on, I don't know. I would guess it is another way for Samyang to make more money off of the lens series, buy making people buy a lot of accessories on top of the base lenses.

    The point of a cine lens and manual focus is NOT having a hard stop, it is having a REPEATABLE and PRECISELY ACCURATE point on the ring for a specific focus point. I couldn’t care less if you get a satisfying noise when you hit the stop (rarely - if ever - are you slamming your focus pulling into the stops). What I want to know is if I measure my subject at 5 meters and set a mark/stop on my focus puller to 5 meters, will the manual focus adapter hit that exact, tack-sharp, spot each and every time.
    Typically a focus by wire system has a particular focus point shift all over the place during use, which makes marks and stops useless and requires the puller to ‘find’ the focus each and every time. Sloppy focusing. I want to know if this system uses its smarts to let the manual focus adapter find that point every time… i’d bet it gets close every time but is it close enough to let you set a stop and quickly rotate l to the stop and be tack sharp every time? That would be useful info.

      These lenses shift focus point when manually focusing. It drifts. See Brandon Li’s video. I think you can skip to the manual focus section where he talks about it.

    Idk man... This is just an autofocus lens with some "manual elements" thrown on as an afterthought to me. I just don't see the manual functions working well with the design limitations the original autofocus lens has placed upon it. As an autofocus lens, it's honestly mediocre and there are much better optics out there, as a manual focus lens, I don't see the quality of the lens being worth building a system around. Ultimately I think the autofocus needs and the manual cine needs are just inherently different and these lenses are good at neither.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  Před rokem

      Yeah, It’s definitely a hybrid lens. It’s not the perfect manual lens and it’s not the perfect auto focus lens. But if you want to be able to do both, it absolutely gets the job done! Also, the bokeh and colors you get with lenses are actually quite pleasant.

      To be fair these are hybrid lenses with a heavier focus on a autofocus. These are basically the Lumix S primes but for sony e mount. Photography lenses with some nods to video work so they can be used in both cases. things like controlled focus breathing, similar weight and size and similar looks from lens to lens. Normally photography lenses dont much time into matching looks, size, weight and focus breathing. Thats where these types of lenses have a place

      See Dustin Abbott's channel for overview ("An Idea Whose Time Has Come?") and Definitive Reviews of each lens. Keep in mind that Samyang's *first* design objective was *light weight* and *constant form factor* for all lenses. For any run-and-gun videographer -- esp. for gimbal -- that is an excellent value proposition. These lenses do not have to be the sharpest, or the fastest, or the best in any other category (e.g. focus breathing) to be a *great* lens family for solo or small-scale video producers who shoot in auto-focus 80-90% of the time. @erwomc.9117 Can you name a lens family that is both auto-focus and manual focus that is *this light* (280 g), and *constant form factor*, and also sells for about $600-700 per lens?

    • @jasonbalenweddingfilm3749
      @jasonbalenweddingfilm3749 Před 9 měsíci

      i agree but that. same size and weight just sells it for me when shooting on a gimbal. i use their tiny series 24 35 75 1.8 already./ its just the same system with a different housing. can mount all those on a gimbal without rebalancing too but it does take a toll on the gimbal, both temp and battery life. also want that 20mm 1.8 for photography since i used to have a sigma 20mm 1.4 which is heavy asf

  • @gwm-btdbattlesagar.ioandmo9988

      @@gwm-btdbattlesagar.ioandmo9988 It has become super common for Chinese video equipment manufacturers to make their base products cheap.
      Then once you have invested in their system, they make the real money by selling you proprietary accessories.
      It's basically a con, but people buy into proprietary systems because they see it initially as being cheap, when long term it is actuality cheaper to pay more upfront for a proper all in one system.
