- Today is my last day in Saigon, Vietnam and I'm so glad to be joined by Van Vu from @WhatThePho as she is going to be trying to improve my terrible Vietnamese skills.
We headed down to an old favourite called Quán Ăn Cô Liêng which is famous for bò lá lốt or beef in piper leaves as well as another of my favourite dishes, bun thit nuong.
The food here is much better than my pronunciation as much as Vu tried to help me out!

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this CZcams channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

No way! It's What The Pho. Can't believe u got a famous North Vietnamese CZcamsr as a guest, I'm 1 of her biggest fan/subscriber 😅😊❤🇻🇳
Real recognise real 😅
Vietnamese cuisine never uses soy sauce unless you are 1. eating Chinese food 2. dipping bread in egg yolk or 3. you are vegetarian and cannot use fish sauce
Not only for Vietnamese but many Asian countries. Laos, Thai, Cambodia, etc do not use soy sauce, only pussies...errr China, Korea and Japan love them. We like our fish sauce :D
I always ended up with very fat _bò lá lốt_ with too much stuff inside the paper wrap so I appreciate this lesson. Cheers from Indonesia! 🇮🇩🍻🇻🇳
FYI don't call all the waiters/waitresses Em Oi . Depending on their age you have to call them either Chi Oi ( my older sister) Co Oi ( my aunt or miss ) , Ba Oi ( madam) , Em Oi ( young sister or young brother , only when she or he is a little bit younger than you) , Chau Oi ( my niece or my nephew , when she or he is a lot younger than you ) , Anh Oi ( my older brother ), Chu Oi ( my uncle , when he is or looks younger than your father ) , Câu Oi ( my uncle , when he is or looks younger than your mother ) or Bac Oi ( my uncle or my aunt , when she /he is or looks older than your parents ) . Never ever call an old waiter /waitress Em Oi , It would be very impolite and disrespectful , because they could have the same age as your parents or even older and that would make them very upset . Vietnamese is so difficult and complicated that not many foreigners can really master that language .
Thanks for the heads up! What I don’t show in the video is that I’m originally taking to the youngster but he didn’t understand me 😂
Thanks for the informative video. Great to see Van with you!
Hallo from Switzerland! The foods Look so yummy. Thanks for This Video.
I’m a fan of Van and i have never seen her so giggly lol i can tell she was struggling with your accent. Cute video. Love it ❤❤❤

What a great collab! Two of my fave CZcamsrs showing not only where and what to try, but how to eat it the ‘local’ way, throwing in some local language and customs lessons too. Thanks, Gary and Van!

Food looks amazing! Would love to try it one of these days 😊 Thanks for sharing this video Gary🙏🏼
Vietnam is great, you’d love the food!
The Wrapping Roaming Linguist learns to stack his lettuce and destroy his leaf, love it. The fish sauce and garlic dipping sauce looks great.
😅
Greetings from Redondo Beach 🇺🇸 Good work on this video. Food looks delicious. Cheers. 🥂
Thanks so much
Dang, my 3 favorite items all at once 😋
3 classics!
This is special Gary 👍 😊
Thanks Carol!
you might need a empty plate and use a plate as a base to support rolling rice paper more easier
Great tip 😀
This was an all capitals CHEMISTRY! Great video. Apparently we all love the same CZcamsrs. Love Van Vu ❤ and Gary!
Great that you love Vietnamese food. For that Mam Nem, make sure to put ground chili pepper into it. It will enhance the flavor of the sauce even more.
Thanks 🙏
top top video! makes me want to get back to Vietnam
Hurry up!

Thank you 🙏
Van is world famous. Congrats Gary for learning Vietnamese. Winner hands down for me was the grilled meats soup. Just maybe you will think about another 1 with Van Vu again. Such a delicious and yummy video. Outstanding Job.
I hope so!
I want to find the correct mix for that dipping sauce with the pineapple. I have all the ingredients, but I guess I'll just have to play with the proportions. I would do it with pla rha rather than simple fish sauce, but that's just me.
getting those michelin recommends in your belly. good eats in saigon!
I like BBQ Pork noodle! Its so yummy! 😋
So good!
Yum I love the Vietnamese wraps ! Happy Easter to you & family the King of Thonburi ❤

So good Liz!
Excellent stuff Gary. Top content
the wet wipes they sell at the restaurant is 0.40 cents USD, its ok to splurge a little LOL
Haha definitely!
😋😋😋
Why is she telling him to use the term 'em oi' which is for someone younger than him. If he says that to an old auntie or uncle he's gonna get laughed out
I was speaking to the young guy first but he didn’t understand me 😂
Great vid. I'm sure this has been asked many times, what camera gear do you use. Looks like an iPhone? and Rode mics? Thanks mate
Video seems to be showing only green channels from time to time? Everything green.
Yeah no idea what happened there mate!
Thai food 🥝 all the same flavour
