I think that, in this case, 'cute' should be determined by whether this girl wanted to be assaulted by "can't touch me" bullies as she slept. From this standpoint, the make-do haircut is an everyday, visible reminder of the crime perpetrated on her... and it was an assault, not a prank.
That little mean girl was a monster. When he pulled the fire extinguisher off the wall there may have been a small part of me that wanted him to throw it at her..you know just in the movie lol.
