  • Today I'm talking about 10 things I no longer own as a minimalist. And as someone getting out of a pile of student debt, these are 10 things i've also cut from my budget to save money.
    What are some things you no longer own to either simplify your life, or save money?

      Skirts, high heels (still have some low block heels), kitchen gadgets (except garlic press and peeler), free samples, "swag bag" type stuff (like random branded pens and thermoses), extra canvas totes (why does every brand give these out now??)... I'm sure the list goes on!

      Clothes that I am not willing or look forward to wearing (i do easily drop and gain weight, so i keep 4 specific pants for that). Excess make up (1 liner, 2 small 🎨 and 3 lipgloss. I still find it a lot but i want to finish one of the pallet). Extra linens (i got one set that i use year round. Rugs, my apartment already has a carpet and i don't even like that. Dryer sheets. Extra plates.

      I don’t own paper towels. There r a lot of shops on Etsy that make reusable paper towels made out of Cotten, flannel, bamboo etc... They will fit on a regular paper towel holder. When you’re done using them u just wash/dry and snap them back together on your roll. I stopped buying napkins and purchased cloth napkins. I stopped buying shave gel and just use soap. It probably only saves me about $40 a year, but every little bit counts. I have kids, so when they would go to grab a paper towel, they would use 4 to dry their hands and 2 napkins instead of one. I just got sick of nobody listening and following the rules to just use ONE. I just got sick of spending money on items that were just going in the trash.

    The trick with free cosmetic samples is to use them before your holiday because they will run out of date before your holiday. And if you don't plan to use them donate to a women's domestic violence shelter. They need those free samples :) x

    Oh the fantasy wardrobe... in my head I had this image of “successful, confident and business like” when it came to skirts, dresses, heels, ladylike $$$ handbags. I never EVER felt confident in any of these because I knew I was way more myself in flats and jeans/pants. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @pixi78
    @pixi78 Před 3 lety +8

    I can totally appreciate your thoughts on not wearing dresses or skirts. It’s so liberating when you realise something doesn’t work for you and you accept it.
    Thank you for addressing these items in a “you do you” way. Sadly I have seen another minimalist say things like “you MUST get rid of jeans” because she does not like jeans. No-one is saying she has to wear jeans but I firmly believe everyone should choose what works for them and leave others to decide for themselves.

    It's so interesting to hear your experiences and see similarities and differences to my own life. For example, I have actually decluttered in favor of dresses because I find them so much easier to style and wear! And I drop money on supportive bras because my larger bust needs them. But it just goes to show how it's different for each person, different results but the motivation is the same :)

    I am on a journey to use up all the free samples... Been using foil pack shampoos and conditioners for months 😂 I used to try and use them up out of guilt, even if I didn't like the product, but no more! If I don't like it, it goes and I move on

    • @Nina-cd6uw
      @Nina-cd6uw Před 3 lety +3

      You can put all the little shampoos into a container and put in just some of the conditioner packs and use it as a hand soap. I never had so well-scented, moisturized hands as when I used up all of my tiny shampoo rests or samples that I didn't want on my hair.

    We use dryer balls instead of fabric softener, reusable make-up remover pads instead of disposable ones, bar shampoo instead of bottled shampoo, silicone baggies instead of plastic disposable bags, reusable coffee pods instead of the one use pods, cloth napkins rather than paper napkins, and we rarely waste food by eating all our leftovers....not necessarily a minimalist list of items rather the ways we try to reduce our carbon footprint...thanks to our 15 year old daughter.

    We have a lot in common in our lists. One thing to think about is the difference between the things that I don't own and never have (like holiday decorations and dryer sheets - for me) and the things that I used to have and insisted on trying, but gave up on (like dresses and underwire bra - for me), because the mostly the second group tend to reflect parts of myself worth paying attention to and exploring - my fantasy self or getting mature or learning about myself and the environment, what those things mean to me as I start to see balance as something ever evolving and ever changing

  • @budd20e
    @budd20e Před 3 lety

    What you said about free samples resonated so much. I literally just found another box of those hotel soaps, shampoos etc. I made a pact with my family that we would not buy any more of these items until we used all the samples. Luckily most of the samples are unscented or from brands we recognize and are okay with using them which leads me to believe that I either must have declutterd all the ones I knew we wouldn't use or didn't take them in the first place--wishful thinking on that second part but its a good reminder to leave what you don't need so you don't create more waste. Great video!!!

    I really do love your created content lately. You are so true and so authentic. Many things you talked about resonated with my experiences. I gave away my TV, as I never was fond of it till my youth. I don’t own a coffee machine and many other things. About the dresses, I own some, but only wear my very oldest very classic one, a shift dress which is now over 30 years old, but such good quality (summer dress). I got very upset, once my baggage got lost, only because of this one dress 😂😂😂. Luckily I got it back ☺️

    Every single point is on point! I've always liked your content, and lately I feel like I've been able to relate on a whole 'nother level. A few years ago I upgraded my knife set and took a knife skills class, and it has allowed me to avoid buying so many kitchen uni-taskers. Also, as a trying-to-be mama minimalist, I don't buy any toys or kid stuff that require batteries. They either need to be rechargeable via USB, or powered by imagination.

    We are re-doing our living room and I got rid of all of the useless vases and weird Home Sense stuff that was only there for decoration. It was totally just a pain to dust and the new minimal style makes the room feel huge and we love it. Now working on a new kitchen and I donated a load of kitchen small appliances and gadgets I didn't even realize I had. I only want things I use in the new kitchen. I do LOVE my heels and dresses and will never get rid of those 😉. I am far from a minimalist, but I love watching your videos and they do inspire me to change in small ways.

  • @Secretgardenvintageapartment

    I feel like everyone can relate to these videos. We all need to downsize and be more deliberate. There’s so much trash and pollution. I’ve been sharing with my family. They’re honestly helpful in saving money and just in general life hacks. Everyone loves getting a little better. And everyone really loves having someone who can relate to the journey of admitting almost all of us have more then we need and are wasteful. And you have a way of making it so guilt free. If anything. It’s really changed my self esteem and helped me find myself. Xoxo thnx

    I am going to have to get honest with myself about the nice dresses that hang in the back of my closet for the social events that never happen because I'm just not that girl. A couple of good quality dresses can be dressed up or down and handle everything from funerals to weddings. And no thank you to ever suffering in heels again!

    A minor tip on dryer ball - I learned from somewhere to just use unused socks clean them and wrap in a ball (can add a few drops of essential oil of your choice before you wrap them up to give it a nice scent ) and it just does the trick :)) I have 3 or 4 of them they work wonders x

    Love your videos !😍 your right keep what makes you happy and less is best I started a year ago going through my clothes ,shoes etc
    I stopped wearing dresses and skirts probably 12 yrs ago ... I wasn’t happy in them and I love pants😉,
    But I used to have at least 35 shirts , 15 pairs of jeans and dress pants , funny thing is I only wore 8 shirts and 4 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of dress slacks so I donated the rest with the dressy shoes I wear flats or sneakers 😉 my feet are happier.
    so last year I started watching different videos on minimalists .
    I downsized all my clothes and my husbands . Got my daughter doing it as well.
    Started cleaning out the house We no longer own a China cabinet and all those extra tables
    They only hold stuff that we never look at😊
    I kept a very small box of things that I enjoyed and makes me happy.
    My husband will be retiring next yr and if we move it’s best to downsize now.
    We saw both our parents move into and literally saw lots of things being removed dumpster after dumpster or donating
    Very sad
    I don’t want to have a lot of things less dust I have noticed
    🥳🤩thank you for your videos ,

    I've attempted minimalism many times and one of the reason I "failed" multiple times was believing minimalism could only be done using certain shapes or colours (neutrals). I love black, but the rest of the neutral shades just don't suit me. I also didn't quite like the "minimalist" shapes and cuts I saw on videos and from brands. I learned that minimalism could include colour and could include the shapes I liked. The key was just making good, considered choices :) My colour palette is made up of black, blue, green and purple. I keep it from being boring by having different shades of each colour, and because my base is usually blue jeans it all works together. I keep my outerwear black as well as accessories to make sure it goes with each colour. I have small wardrobe but it's colourful and well thought out. Bottom line is - define your own version of minimalism!

    It's shocking (in a positive way?) how similar our list is. Ok, I never owned high heels, but I'm so done owning/wearing shoes that are slightly uncomfortable just to get my money worth and/or because they are pretty. It's just not worth it. It's stressful to think about to wear them at least once or twice a year. It's like an annoying 'To Do List' that will be shifted everday until you tick it off... My feet don't deserve that kind of treatment.

    Cleaning supplies are minimal. Hand soap, one bulk for every sink and refill them. I use an all purpose cleaner in the bathroom and a vinegar, soap and water I mix up myself for the rest of house.
    I no longer have a lot of shoes or clothing. I have less than 40 items in my whole wardrobe. ( not including underwear,socks and bras)
    Hair care products down to 4 products. Facial Skincare, 4 products. Body lotions, 3 products ( I have eczema and psoriasis so needed) Makeup is way down it all fits in a little 3 drawer clear container. I have 1-2 items per category excpasha less,
    Plastic kitchen containers have all been used to death and replaced with glassware with lock lids.
    One thing that has grown are mask for covid.I now own 10 masks. I have to wear one every day. Some times have to change it out, (I work 12 hour shifts.) Since the pandemic, I no longer have a minimal pantry. We now keep it stocked. Not hoarding, not parshables, just enough food/staples for 3 months. I'm never going to go back to a minimal pantery and freezer.( Our grocery stores where empty on and off for 3-4 weeks.)

    I've come to accept that I'm not a skirt person either, and so I decluttered my one and only skirt recently; it feels good to not be holding onto it anymore! Also, I can relate a lot to the fantasy self mindset and how I used to buy clothes that made my outfits look more polished or elevated. I'm grateful that most of my purchases throughout my style journey were secondhand, so it wasn't a total loss when I had to part with those items.

    High Heels, flat uncomfortable shoes, mini skirts, shorts (for outside the house) I get rid of. Some clothes for „painting only“. I wish I could quit underwire bras 😆 I’m not buying unhealthy products for my body, only clean or green beauty. And I try to use less plastic, in the bathroom is it the easiest way 😊

    It’s so funny, growing up I loved playing dress up and would dream of the day I could wear high heels. I came to the realization I am just not a person that has a place to wear them to, nor that can walk on them. I’m strictly pump and block heel. During this pandemic tho, I’ve stuck to my sandals and sketchers lol.
