    Crazy question..why do you need remoteID on a sub 250 drone?

    • @TRONCATFPV
      @TRONCATFPV  Před 5 měsíci +7

      Great question! Pinning this 👍
      If you're flying drones under a part 107, you need RID regardless of weight.
      If you're just flying recreationally drones under 250g don't need RID.

    • @davidsvideos195
      @davidsvideos195 Před 5 měsíci +5

      No you don't. The laws are not enforced. You're more likely to get in trouble by having remote id. 🙄

    • @TRONCATFPV
      @TRONCATFPV  Před 5 měsíci +17

      @@davidsvideos195 I bet I am one of the few people that can argue the latter.
      I was approached by local PD when filming an event, above a crowd, with the sub250g drone that I showed in this video.
      This was late September in Andover, MA.
      The officer I spoke with (to my surprise) knew what he was talking about and had worked with the FAA in the past due to a prior drone incident in the town. The officer asked me about the weight of the drone, who I had coordinated with, LAANC authorization, and asked if I had RID on board yet. This was soon after the FAA pushed the RID “enforcement” back to March 16 and the officer was (amazingly) aware of this as well.
      I wouldn’t say the regulation won't be enforced by any means.
      The likelihood of getting caught flying a drone without RID will be very slim and few and far between. But I think it's fair to say that someone operating a drone business has a MUCH higher likelihood of getting caught simply due to the increased flight time and where they are flying.

    I read on the manual that you are suppose to keep that away from a heat source and have the antennas out to get good signal, have you had any issues with that or ways to have the antennas out. Looking to pick up a couple of these for my 250g quads and looking to get the best one. Between this and the db121pcb. I am wondering... Would it be a ""good"" idea to install the BS but then limit its effectiveness by sabotaging the antennas? I guess you could clip them short or just outright remove them if its safe for the module. This way it works fine at very short ranges and you are technically perfectly compliant but as soon as you gain some distance it just stops being effective and you don't have to worry about it... in minecraft.

      @TRONCATFPV  Před 5 měsíci

      If you have a GPS already on your drone, check out dronetags DRI module. It’s meant more for drone manufacturers that want to make drones RID compliant but hobbyist can use it too.
      This is cheaper than the BS, has integrated antennas, goes in between the GPS & FC and is equally as small.
      If you ultimately decide to use the BS as your standalone GPS, you can configure it in betaflight like a normal GPS so you can use GPS rescue 👍

    I teach in an applied physics program that focuses on the use of sUAS for infrastructure inspection. I cornered an FAA rep at the last AUVSI show and asked him how remote ID will make anything "safer" or prevent bad actors from being naughty. His reply is that it wont. This whole thing is about public perception. It has nothing at all to do with safety. Its about showing those who are ignorant of how we use these that the government is providing "oversight" even if its in name only.
    I think a more reasonable plan would be requiring remote ID within five miles of an airport or if you are flying under a controlled shelf. Other than that there is zero point to this device. What's really hilarious is that in the areas we fly the most for our program we rarely have decent enough cell coverage to get the app running anyway.

      Right so once you add the GPS you're looking at pretty much the same price as a dronetag BS but have a heavier RID module.
      I'm pretty sure the DRI also has GPS passthrough and just goes in-line between the GPS & FC.

    • @Caldoric
      @Caldoric Před 5 měsíci

      Well, it's comply or die (or rather, lose the flight license and/or business). Unfortunately. The US is rather sensitive about civilians handling somewhat readily-available flying devices, especially after 9/11. Not to mention, we've seen the tactical use of commonly-available racing drones carrying grenades and RPGs over in the Ukraine/Russia conflict in the last couple years, so...
      My main concern with the mandated tech is that it broadcasts its data unencrypted instead of encrypted.
