It's so interesting to me as a former ICU nurse ( 3 yrs. retired and LOVING IT!) that Lou said, " you learn to control the anxiety and the worse things get, the more calm you become". I often would have a really critical pt. who I knew was going to cardiac arrest, but the family would never know it by looking at me. I just would become hyper focused and there was no place for panic. He explained it perfectly and I find it's how I respond to many difficult situations. I think Florida has hurricane response down to a science and I hope that people can rebuild their homes and start to heal their wounds and losses. Glad to hear your both are fine.

I did the same thing working 42 years as an RN. I never let the patients or families see my reaction. I remember times I cried after I left work. I spent my first 17 years in renal transplant then my last 25 in a 4th level NICU. 38 years of my life as an RN working Night Shift, 7pm -7:30am. My nurse managers job was the last 4 years of my career. Now happily retired for 5 years. It all was very rewarding. I would do it all again, but I love my retirement life in paradise.

My husbamd was an er nurse at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft Myers 2000 to 2004. I know he was terrific at it...he had exactly the focus you describe. I have it too but am a clonical psychologist...we dont treat life threatening emergencies however. I know I have it because we sailed the Caribbean..our sailboat at was at the City Marina when he worked at Lee. We had several emergencies including a hurricane at anchor in Key West, category 1. Several boats almost hit us. I was more in control than he was but of foourse the heavy work should we drag anchor was his. I was pretty philosophical and was the one to grab an air horn as a boat came within inches of hitting us. FOCUS is key in life in many professions.

So happy to see you and Lou Tammy. You are so right in that we all have different experiences in these situations. We had mandatory evacuation orders with Michael (Cat 5). Our condos also had all the hurricane protection and other than down porch fans and our pier there appeared to be no structural damage via inspections. One year later our roofs had to be replaced due to damage that didn't appear right after the storm. We were lucky that our HOA had not closed out the claim with our insurance provider. Take care..patti

First, it is wonderful to hear that you were safe during the storm. Second, my father who lives in Venice, FL did get damage from the storm but he is safe. Praise Jesus. Third, I am so glad you mentioned the devasting effects of storms in the NE. I currently live in the midwest and we see tornadoes, ice storms, white-out blizzards, 115+ heat waves, flash flooding, etc. You name it, the midwest gets it! We HAVE to be prepared, period! It amazes me how people jump on this hurricane panic wagon when it comes to Florida's events. Yes, hurricanes can be horrendous and take lives. So can driving snow storms in Oklahoma, shear wind forces in Iowa, or tornadoes in Missouri. All can, and many times do, have destruction and death in their wake. Florida has some of the best high sustained wind construction in the world. It is amazing the engineering that has gone into protection of property and life. With that said, if people follow the warnings issued by the government about evacuation areas, and seek shelter in proper places loss of life is mitigated. My heart breaks for those who have lost everything. It is a difficult job picking up pieces of your life when everything you own is gone. I pray for a quick recovery in the area. Stay safe, the two of you.

So glad you fared as well as I did. We really are the lucky ones🙏. I, too, read about the kiddy pool with turf in the garage for our babies. Unfortunately, it was too late for Ian but will definitely get one, just in case. When Lou explained why you chose to live where you are, out of a flood zone, I totally heard my husband. He had exactly the same reasoning: it would be lovely to live by the water, walk down to the beach anytime, etc….. but, Florida has bad storms and Ian proved to be a real bad one😩. About evacuating: the only reason why I would consider evacuation is because of the aftermath: losing power, Internet, cell phone drove me crazy😱. But, once again, we were very lucky: FPL did an amazing job and our power was restored very fast. AT&T, my cell phone carrier was back on early Friday morning! Comcast was the slowest to come back on and it probably was due to structural damage. My little girl was, like your girls, a real trooper and refused to use the pads I had put all over the house😲. Let’s keep the not so lucky ones in our prayers🙏

Having lived on the Cape of Massachusetts for 50 years I have been through many serious hurricanes and know the devastation. Some people don’t realize that sometimes tornadoes or earthquakes can occur in the aftermath of the storm. Lou is quite right in saying preparation and remaining calm are a necessity in bad weather. I endured the hurricanes and blizzards I think in part because of being able to focus and try to prepare for multiple situations. Being an RN seemed to provide a sense of comfort for my neighbors also. I kept you all in my prayers.

Glad you both are safe! I’m also in Fort Myers, about 10 min from your area. Zone A. Finally got our power back Sunday night (12 days) Then lost at 5 pm yesterday again and still out. Thank goodness for friends who have power that have given us a place to stay. Yes, you must be on the Hertz Arena grid because some friends we know also never lost power. We were very lucky to not get any flooding in our home. But I’ve been through 4 hurricanes and never experienced the storm surge. That was the most terrifying thing, within 30 min the water rose above our mailboxes (5 ft). I’ll never stay for one again! ❤

    Hi Tammy,
Thank you for the update. I’m so glad that y’all came through the hurricane pretty well. It’s incredibly sad that many elderly people lost everything and some even their life.
I’m in north Texas so I’ve been through many tornado seasons. By the grace of God, my family has always been spared with just minimum damage. Since I was a kid, my family has always had a dog. I remember during tornado watches and warning making sure that we had collected food and water for our dog, that they had their leases on, that we had recent photos along with the most recent vaccination information with us. I still do this with my dog as an adult. My horse is branded and he is also registered to me. If we lived in a hurricane prone area I would have taken my horse and left. I had heard about several horse owners and ranches in Florida that had wrote their phone numbers on their horses backs large enough to be seen from a distance and then they opened the gates to allow the horse to seek the highest ground possible. I haven’t seen anything posted, so I hope all of the horses and other live stock are all ok. Being prepared including having escape plans is very smart.

So lucky and happy for you. I am a retired insurance broker and have had clients with secondary and tertiary homes in Florida and colleagues with year-round residents. Numerous counseling sessions on how to prepare for hurricanes, not only from a food and water perspective but long before by upgrading homes to meet current building codes, getting generators, having hurricane shutters on sight or install automatic roll down shutters or hurricane impact glass when possible. So many insurance companies have withdrawn from the state because many don’t (or can’t) exercise proactive risk management. Your favorable experience is not just luck due to your location vs the surge area, but it is also a direct result of being fully prepared. Congratulations for your ability to be on top of it. Btw - I retired at 60 and the very best decision ever!

Thankful you are safe and the house is ok. Ian was my 7th storm. I live in Winter Park and we experienced more flooding in this area. My home is fine. Lost power for 36 hours. The most damage from these storms is cause by the surge. Storm prep is the most important. Respect Mother Nature. Community is everything. Sending love and hugs. 🙏🏻🌻

Material things are not important. Things will be back to normal in no time.
My brother was in the path of Andrew, and it so happens that I had send
my 12 yr old to be with them that Summer. He is now 42 and continues to
remember the devastation and the fear they experienced. Mother Nature is powerful.

So glad your home didn’t have any damage. So sad about our area and all the destruction! We did lose power but we are on the airport grid so we got it back fast. So many people didn’t have power for so long-and still don’t! I was just afraid my three panel slider wasn’t going to hold. Even though we’re to code too, the rattling of the windows was so unnerving and so long! Now we have to rebuild our beautiful area. 😢

  • @Cvitti
    @Cvitti Před rokem +1

I wonder if we are on that grid also since we didn’t lose power either except for the flicking. We were told that we were on the the airport grid but then they said they had lost power so who knows. We did lose water for 8 days but not complaining with people who are a lot worse then us. 🙏🏻 Good to see you back and with your better half.❤

Hello from Estero, we were lucky too, 3 days no power, Internet, cable, texting, phone and 13 days boil water notice and no flooding. If officials tell you to evacuate you must leave! Heartbreaking for Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Pine Island. Glad you both are ok.

So glad to hear that you are all doing well! My brother and sister in law live near Panama City Beach & they are doing good as well! They just moved to that area three years ago from the East Coast of Florida and they had their house built to new Hurricane specs. The rest of my family live on the East Coast. Praying for all who have been devastated by this storm. I've lived through several Hurricanes & now live in an area where I must worry about Tornadoes.

The recovery is a very coordinated effort. I am in coastal Mississippi and we typically have severe storms also…. For each storm our power companies in surrounding states send most crews to the affected areas. You are also lucky it cooled down. Typically it is hot as hades after a hurricane. So happy you all did well. Our live oaks still haven’t fully recovered from Katrina which was in excess of 15 years ago. It had a storm surge in excess of 25 feet.

Don't put the kiddy pool in thr garage. The pressure of the hurricane will not allow you to open the door to the garage. Learned a lesson this year.
