Genuine question - what do Americans have against watching sitcoms in their original versions? In the UK you could write a huge list of US shows which are popular and no issues of cultural barriers to understand the humour.
I know like you said at the start that Gavin is probably the straight man of the show but man Matt Horne has insane chemistry with almost every other actor. But too many of these remakes just take a particular aspect of a character and Falnderize it too hell, completely missing that Smithy and Nessa actually so care and have emotion Smithy may come across quite happy go lucky but he shows real emotion, like when Nessa tells him he's they're going to have a baby, his anger felt real, and when Nessa actually get emotional, like when Stacey finds out she's pregnant and Nessa starts to actually cry, Nessa and Stacey despite being opposites really feel like best friends, Pam and Mick are like a real couple, Gwen is a genuine Mother, you can tell she'd do anything for anyone, especially if it involves beating an egg. We all know a Pete and Dawn, a couple who almost seem to hate each other, but as Pam says they'd never really look at anyone else, and that's probably why they're still together 10 years later in the Christmas special.
The casting is horrible, it’s like they didn’t watch a single second of the original. There are American actors who could pull off those roles but definitely not who they casted
I think they cast this based mainly on physical resemblances to the two-sentence descriptions of each character in the original. The idea of interpreting the actual characters never occurred to them.
when I saw Raphael bob waksburgs name on the credits there I thought I was hallucinating (story editor for one episode apparently). what is even going on here. I guess they wanted Jane kaczmarek to just be Lois again? :/
"Better With You" (ABC) "Perfect Couples" (NBC) "Mad Love" (CBS) The idea of three contrasting couples: A) the lovey-bunnies pair, B) the dog & cat pair, C) the pair that are either boringly settled but will go off like a time-b0mb one day or we don't even see them as a possible couple yet. The above three sitcoms were all running at approximately the same time. I remember mentally comparing them to Gavin & Stacey, Ned and Stacey (which itself was retooled as Will and Grace), HIMYM, Friends, Coupling, Coupling U.S., Happy Endings and later, Marry Me, A to Z and Friends with Better Lives. A well-worn sitcom concept.
Though the original doesn't specifically say what Stacey's dad died of, the letter he wrote to her to be opened on her wedding day shows that he knew he wasn't going to be around and so I think we can assume it probably was cancer or some kind of illness as opposed to an accident.
I wonder if that’s less that they were directly involved, and more that they had to be listed as producers because they created it and needed/wanted credit. I doubt that it would’ve turned out this way if they were actually involved to any degree.
I love the shade directed toward James Corden in this! 😂 I’ve often wondered how much of the likable aspects of G&S were mostly Ruth’s doing. Hard to say. In the end though, it was a brilliant show overall, and the US attempt at a remake is fucking shameful and unnecessary. I’d never heard of it before this video, and thank goodness was for that. Yikes.
1:41 in, and I can't watch any more! It's kind of a shame as this seems like a pretty solid review and comparative critique, and what I did watch was interesting enough. However, I can't stand the thought of more flashing colours and annoying voice changes ev-er-y time you mention Cordon 🙄😒 I'm no great fan of Cordon, don't get me wrong. But I'm not here for Cordon bashing, I'm here for a review of another American Rip off of an Excelent British show; that even the Americans don't usually want cos they love the British originals too! I think what I actually find so egregious is that it's somehow actually MORE annoying than "that video" made by a 10 year old who just discovered fade and star-wipe teansitions; as if that's even possible ... which - I guess - is an achievement in a way 🤷🏼♀️ Anyhow, I suppose you did a service, so thanks is in order: For reminding me why I continue to pay my licence fee. For all the slick content on CZcams these days, ultimately, it is the "Amature Hour" platform. For certain, the only sure-fire way to get your media without a peppering of abrupt audio and visual changes - on the whim of the creators' personal opinions - is to stick with quality productions made by professionals; who produce content with a sense of professionalism in mind. P.s. I can fully respect and appreciate if this is your style and your content just isn't for me. It just seems, however, that the first minute or so of a video (this length) is supposed to captivate. So to have found it this off-putting in less than one tenth of the video made it feel worthy of feedback

I'm not a full time youtuber and with only around 30 or so vids on this channel I'm still finding my voice and trying to stay true to my own personality in my reviews, if that personality isn't for you then fair enough. I'm very sorry my video annoyed you I don't make vids with the aim of annoying anyone. If it's the style and tone you dislike though I'd urge you not to watch any of my other videos because it is the style I gravitate towards, however unrefined or unprofessional it currently is. The moment you mention the stereotypes and the show not leaning into them properly you just know the American show isn't going to work, Hell as a Welsh person the stereotypes Gavin and Stacy was playing with are borderline offensive, and only aren't because you know it was written by a Welsh woman and despite how on the nose Gwen, Bryn, Nessa etc are there was an element of believability to all of them despite the stereotype being pushed to its complete extreme, Like yeah Nessa probably is an offensive caricature of a certain type of woman from South Wales. But you all know someone just a bit like Nessa enough for it to be funny as a Welsh writer putting a mirror up to and showing how from the outside your culture looks. I imagine its much the same for viewers from Essex. The show fundamentally does not work it its not allowed to get that close to the edge with the stereotypes
