In the US, the suburban and generally affluent families provided the player pool for soccer. That has never really worked for the men, but was fine for the women as effectively the rest of the world invested little in women’s football.
Now we are seeing the effects of how minivans taking Madison and Ashley to their soccer practice a few times a week and playing glorified kickball on the weekend does not really produce technically sound and creative players.
As more woman overseas are exposed to high level technical training in academy structures designed for long term development, and we in the US continue to wallow in pay to play club soccer focused only on winning at a young age, we will continue to see the US fail at these competitions.

Vlatko is no match tactically for these other European coaches. This team looked awful, there was no identity, style of play or game plan from what I can tell. It was just a group of talented players running around as fast and as hard as they can with no coherency. Nowhere near good enough.

Completely agree with the US losing dominance in the sport as a whole. Honestly, this was inevitable. The US was way ahead when it came to building up Women's Soccer, but that gap is closing. I'm not convinced the gap is closing because the US development has gotten worse, but simply because other countries are putting more resources into it.
But the reason we lost, and haven't been as good these past 2 years, is simply due to the coaching staff's decisions. Not b/c of our national player talent pool.

    • @littlerebel296
      @littlerebel296 Před 10 měsíci +1

Totally agree. I think Vlatko didn't select the best "team" oriented type players and was going more off of individual position dominant players. Vlatko was a "yes man" coach for these players with too much coddling and was afraid to push them out of their comfort zones in training. And it showed in the attacking third, where they failed miserably. Vlatko was in over his head for tactical awareness & I'm surprised he got as far as he did (without being called out). But the older players weighed heavily on hiring him. Ariane Hingst (Fox Analyst) nailed the description of his abilities as "weak."
Our player pool is fine, as I think the college level is improving with tactics and technical skills. We'll be moving in the right direction if we can land a Sarina Wiegman
(England) or Emma Hayes (Chelsea) as coach. Or Margueritte Aozasa (UCLA) who shows great promise.

Europeans are going to dominate the sport like with the mens side. Women football was once an amateur sport, not now anymore. Today, football nations like Spain, Netherland, Portugal to name a few are investing considerably in female football the last few years. The female Champions League in Europe has never been as coveted as today because big teams like Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, Madrid, Manchester, Juventus, Bayern are now investing heavily on the sport to win that title. That will increase the standard of the womens football not only in Europe but internationally. The new young talents that showcased their skill in this WC are likely to play in those big teams who have the ressource.
For the US to be able to keep up with europeans or rest of the world for that matter, they need to revamp their system. Player development should be prioritized above the "winning mentality". Also the federation should encourage players to play in the best clubs in Europe. And finally "college soccer" should be substituted by academies national wise or abroad. Alternatively domestic women club teams should merge together with MLS clubs who already have relatively strong ressource both economically and technically with good academies.
Edit: That being said the US should have won vs Sweden because Sweden played very poor and will be exposed big time vs Japan if they play the same ugly football.

Where does the idea come from that the USWNT has tons of talent?
Are we talking athletic talent or soccer playing talent?
OK, athletic talent you bet, sure.
But soccer playing talent - wishful thinking - weren't you watching the games.
Our ability to control a soccer ball, retain the ball under pressure, pass the ball accurately, and demonstrate a high soccer IQ were all eclipsed by the Dutch, the Portuguese, and the Swedes.
Or any other first rank team you'd care to mention.
Our athletic talent has kept us in the conversation as a first rank team, bolstered by a couple (a couple) of really good players, e.g. Mal & Girma.
Superior athletes generally do better on defense than attack, and much better on defense than the midfield. In attack (and defense) speed will often rule the day.
As far back as 2015, our athletic superiority was becoming less dramatic - that team's success was driven in large part by the genius of Morgan Brian.
2019 was the swan song for athletic superiority coupled with iron clad winning attitude, typified by Lloyd, Ertz, O'hara and others.
Now both of these effects have lessened. Everyone can see the lack of clothes on the Empress.
An understrength Spanish team played us off the field in October - as did the Dutch, as did Portugal.
And of course, our coaching was terrible. The culture on the team has long forced and emphasis on player management skills over anything like soccer coaching excellence.
We only won in 2015 because an injury forced the introduction of MB - looked like a good call by Ellis, but she was forced into it.
Leaving Thompson on the bench during this cup, while tired and slow defenders struggled with our pace down the wings - was criminal.
Our one advantage was still a marginal athletic superiority with Smith, Rodman, Williams, and Thompson - this advantage was squandered.
If we are going to be in the conversation as a first rank women's soccer/football power, we have to start by being honest about what the problems are.
Telling ourselves we have oodles of soccer talent and just need a coaching adjustment is unlikely to achieve the desired result.

There is no way in hell that system can compete against the European system now that they are starting to take it seriously. Unless the US completely reforms its player development system I would be very surprised if the USWNT ever wins the cup again.

US soccer federation need total revamp both men and women teams. Start with the GM, coaches, team organization from bottom to top. I’ve seen our junior teams play and they have no tactical talent. They depend on individual Athleticism instead of team play. Every one wants to be the hero.
Start picking players that are unselfish and team player.
Start now to get ready for the Olympic.
Hopefully the new generation can get it straight. I also hope that they haven’t been tainted by the Rapinoe’s of the world.
Lastly, show u have pride in our country at least put ur hand over ur heart for the national anthem. Is that too much to ask. By away Americans should not have to ask it should be automatic.
    God bless America.

The claimed standard is not realistic any more because the quality of the other teams has improved very much so they make it simply impossible to fulfill its requirements. And besides the quality of the players is not that outstanding. Power football is not enough any more and the US players are technically not the best. But don´t worry, with no doubt somewhere in the top 10 the team will range in future depending on the talents available.
What surprises me most though is the fact that the panel simply seems not able to accept that the US dominance is over for good. By the way, obviously nobody seems to consider that Rapino missed on purpose to take her ultimate revenge on all republican patriots that bully her. For I have never seen her miss a penalty.

A poor world cup for sure, there is no sugar coating that, but for me Vlatko is the common denominator for the failures, and its no coincidence that hes been the head coach for this team for the last 2 major women's tourneys that ended in failures. Hes held on to Alex Morgan leading the line far too long, he used players over the last 2 years leading up to the WC, and then didnt use them at all in the WC(Alana Cook, Ashley Sanchez and Sofia Huerta). It just didnt look like he knew what to do with what he had at his disposal and thats criminal giving the talent at this level

Seems that these young guys are desperate for Vlatko's head. Don't worry it's done, he will be fired or They will ask him to announce that he is leaving the position, either way that is the end of it. The Federation will announce other changes as the whole system is diverting from the top. The NWSL needs more competition more games with clubs that have different styles of play. Before it was enough to be physically strong and to be angry. Today the women's soccer world has changed to be more tactical, more creative, more intelligent but so far the NWSL and the federation has failed to recognize that. If we keep ignoring for instance the women's Mexican league, we will miss an opportunity as there is no other league in the vicinity. Mx league clubs are already aiming to Europe.

When a country spent a handsome load of money and time in building and developing a certain sports, the success is always cherished by its nationals. What about other countries, competing countries, regardless of populace and economic strength? The success of the USWNT has been a phenomenon. It has been admired, inspiring for many European countries, and followed all over the world. Asian countries took a different approach but the success of Japan in this international game is not seen as a miracle but grit, determination, and discipline. There is such a stark difference between Asian culture and western culture in everything, sports is one of them only. The Asian culture is more subtle, refined and people in Asia seldom considered a successful sport in soccer, holds so much value in their hearts. Perhaps Asian people like Japanese, Korean and Chinese normally do not match the physicality and strength of Europeans in body built. Therefore, that "dominance" prevailed in women world soccer when a golden generation of footballers emerged in the US while other countries around the world watched, followed, and attempted to match.
In league games, whether you are talking about basketball, tennis, soccer or football (American), your success in lifting a trophy is sometimes short lived. A team could win a title, be it a nationwide competition or international, could fail to defend that title in a second season. A serial winner is always the result of good team management, retention of talent, adding strength in different dimensions and trimming weaknesses by attrition. So players come and go, new talents emerges and falling stars fade away naturally from the arena. We call this a natural cycle. Just like life, things come and go. So if you are moaning about USWNT's poor performance failing to chase a third successive World Cup title, please don't be. It is only time for change. It is reality check. It is life. It is the truth about sports.
The US is an affluent country with advance social economic lifestyles supported by abundant wealth. The social media had a huge part to play in the success of the USWNT in promotion, televising and advertising supports. The popularity of this sport and support of the national team is a collective effort of the people of America, which momentum and stamina will be extremely difficult if not impossible for another country to come close. Take China for example, they have the money, the resources and the heart to do the same but their political system is a restrain in yielding a result in dominating soccer success. So the answer to the question is, no, this is not the end of American women soccer to dominate the world. It is a common phenomenon, a cycle, the teams take turns in dominating a sport. Scientifically, the dominance definition is a function of various resources input, time investment, talent development, and public support etc., dominance therefore is the output. The US has everything to be successful again but time is a key factor for all the elements to click and work. The World Cup holds a competition every four years, generation of players develop in this cycle. It may be another eight years or twelve years for the next bunch of talents to succeed this USWNT. To cry over spilt milk is pathetic. It is like history, things come and go, like a kingdom at its height and faded into mist when its realm is destroyed. You only have history, you don't have an illusive "dominance" of world football in any sense.

The front three didn’t work. I believe Vlatko was not flexible. Every match requires different strategy. With Sonnet, US controlled the midfield. Why didn’t he put her there from the get go? I believe the U.S. team has talents, but were not utilized effectively. It looks like Vlatko didn’t know the players well. Talents wasted. Some new young players were sitting at the bench the whole time. From the second game, we all know that Rapinoe and Morgan didn’t work. Vlatko still put them in. He thought that the veterans would bring the cup home. I am very upset.

    • @streetgato9697
      @streetgato9697 Před 10 měsíci

That was a makeshift lineup that worked as fluke, it won't work next time against better teams. They're in that situation because Vlatko failed to find a solid centerback as he's not confident in Alana Cook, that's why Ertz was playing centerback which is not her position. Ertz is a master at midfield. Sullivan failed time and time again to control that midfield. Sonnett is a defensive liability, she's lucky to get away with fouls because the referee didn't make many calls and ignored many infractions.
Sonnett and Sullivan are mediocre players who should not be in this roster. All that issues have been going on for quite some time, and the responsibility to fix it falls on Vlatko, but he failed.

the insulting physical dominance is not there anymore as other programs invest more and more; and given that those other football cultures produce players that are highly technical already, the cocktail is not looking good for a a football culture that only seeks fast transitions and dominance in set pieces!! and BTW that is even more evident in the men’s game where the presence of a solid midfielder is no where to be seen - in that sense the women’s team has advantage because they have Lavelle - it’s not about the coach. It’s about a football culture that ponders being reactive rather than proactive - Sweden gave them the ball after minute 30 and after that the USWNT didn’t know what to di with it!!!

Many good points made in these comments. I may add this:
The US has won 4 world cups (that should have really been 5, no one knows how they lost the 2011 final), because for more than 20 years, *NOBODY cared about the women’s game* . Just think that NORWAY has also won the World Cup!! Now, *some* countries, start to show *some* interest for the game and the US is already losing its grip. It’s inevitable. Imagine what will happen if Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Serbia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay etc start *really* investing money in the women’s game. All these teams will be added to England, Spain, France, Netherlands and Japan as potential US rivals. And what will happen then? At worst the team would be like China (1999 finalists), at best like Norway (1995 winners). Why? Because soccer culture in all these countries is 80 years *in front* of the US.
Just think about that: Portugal, a valiant but mediocre European team, in a country where not many people care about women’s soccer, with a decent but unknown coach (in a country that produces great men’s coaches by the dozens), totally tactically outplayed a much more talented US team and almost eliminated them.
US Soccer goes about the sport exactly like they do about volleyball, waterpolo or wrestling (based on the NCAA). Eventually, for soccer this WILL NEVER work. Not when your rivals come from the academies of FC Barcelona and in the future Santos, Flamengo, Roma, Ajax or Boca Juniors.
    It’s that simple.

Here's something to think about. A team starts winning international games to the point where they are #1 in the world for years. Multiple Olympic and World cup wins. They get to a point where the nation looks at them as their representative for US soccer more than the Men's team. And they get to a point where they can negotiate their own contract that benefits them. It's different from the men's CBA, they get so many things that they wanted, in international play, they still don't make as much as the men. But it's their fault. They had a chance to make the same contract but refused. So they go on this agenda pushing campaign saying all the right stuff, taking it to court... and the court decides against them. But they still make a stink until USSF folds. And gives them more than the men. A lot more. The splitting of WC winnings was key because they knew they would make more not even paying than winning. So, the let the men fight as hard as they can, get the money, and figure, hey.. we don't have to do anything. And that's what they did. They chose an average team, not picking the best, holding over old, over the hill players for "inspiration and leadership" and play lack luster. Why? So they don't have to pony up their highest payoff for winning it all. The men just got paid about $900,00 for the women's finish, while the women got 6.5 mil. for the men's finsh last year. Coicindence?

Glad they lost. Most of them hate our country. They can leave starting with Rapinoe.

Please no Ellis or Pia. Great American coach if there’s any. If not doesn’t say much of our soccer coaches.

Um, yeah, I'm totally blaming Rapinoe, Smith, and O'Hara's misses. They are professionals. These should have been made.

When was the last time you saw a men's WC team miss three PK's, two of which weren't even on goal?

I love to watch women soccer because men soccer is too fast for me to process mentally. As a chess player, I watch the women games as a game of chess. USWNT players are practically 100% skillful to know where to move on the chess board. They need a Chess Grand Master, and Vlatko is a checker player. I recommended firing Vlatko in all my comments on CZcams, and got sharp replies. At last, Vlatko will be fired.
The team, as performed against Sweden, is still one of the best in the world. Removing the tumor Megan Rapinoe who has held Vlatko by the balls, it will be a new day for USWNT. The surgery is painful, but it WAS finally done. Go home and recover and I will be happy to see all of you in the next game. With Horan in front , singing our National Anthem.

Not necessarily. Overall, the level in many other countries went up significantly for many reasons and the game is and will be more competitive moving forward.
There are so many girls playing futbol all over this great country, that I assure you very soon we will have a world-class team winning like in the old days.
Sometimes is OK to loose. It brings humility.
Do not listen to DJT or any explayer throwing venom to our team. Love them!

We have quantity but not quality…pay to play promotes a very direct style of play from an early age because youth teams just want to win, and therefore kickball soccer wins the day. Players therefore do not develop technically as they should.
This is why the US couldn’t score at this tournament. They still are hard to break down defensively because our women are still superior athletically, but the days of just kicking the ball past the opponent and scoring are over.
We are going the way that the England men’s team did in the mid-twentieth century…from champs to chumps.
