  • Welcome to the layout room for this easy tutorial! The Lionel 153IR is a great accessory controller that can be used for lights , signals and accessories of all types!
    Hope this tutorial helps and always remember to read the instructions that Lionel provides in the box. Incorrect wiring may result in catastrophic damage of the controller unit.
    The MTH Crossing signals were purchased on eBay
    The 153IR was purchased at ‪@thetrainshopweekly4859‬ of Landsdale PA.
    Happy Railroading!

    Nice review. The best part about this is. I got quite a few places on my layout where I want a crossing but it’s on a corner. There isn’t a lot out there for corner crossings. This set up allows for a corner crossing just like your demonstration. Thanks for the idea.

    You know Nick, I’ve always noticed how those crossing signals from MTH look extremely similar to Right of Way’s crossing signals. Except the bottom is black and crossing sign’s lettering is bolder. Maybe MTH acquired the tooling when Right of Way Industries went out of business.

    Great video Nick! Question: is there a way to add another 153IR on the other side of the crossing to activate the signals from that direction? Wasn’t for sure if connecting two IR detectors to the same pair of signals was possible…

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for watching! Unfortunately I don’t believe so, that might cause some
      Unintended fireworks. On my current layout I have these wired in phase with my auxiliary transformers / track. They can be activated from both tracks via blocked / insulated outer ground rail.

      Thanks so much for watching! Unfortunately eBay or Trainz are probably your best bet on finding these. They run sort of steep around $100 usd. I’d also recommend wiring them in phase with your track so you don’t have to use an IR sensor. Lionel has a video on how to do that.

    Do both parts of the Ir come in the Lionel kit? When I’m looking it up I only see pictured the big control box in the foreground and not the ir on the other side of the track. Is that a separate piece?

    • @NixCrossing
      @NixCrossing  Před rokem +1

      Great question, the piece at the bottom is a track lock-on only meant for tubular track. That piece did not connect well to the tubular track when I used it years ago. The “new” kits do not include that lock-on piece. I’d highly recommend to wire the IR with auxiliary power

      You’d be better off using something called “phasing transformers” for that. I did that with my signals on the new layout. Basically the track and Aux transformers share a ground. There are videos on CZcams that can explain it much better than I can. A friend of mine helped me wire it up.
