  • M-2 is a 240W/channel X2 audiophile power amplifier. This is a complex job that takes a lot of time, patience and skill. However, It is a wonderful experience when I look back for the entire repairing process. I hope this video can help others who also have the same problems on their amplifiers.

    I have the same amp, also one channel out but I can't find a place to buy the fuse resistors or the outputs. I keep missing something on my repair job because it keeps blowing the secondary power supply fuses, not the mains.

      I was successful in repairing my amp. One channel finally went out again but this time I can't find out why dc balance and bias pots don't alter the voltage. All zero. Everything else checks out fine. Maybe the jfet 2sk146?? Any ideas where to look on the pcb's? I am missing something somewhere

    What could be problem??

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan  Před 4 lety +1

      According to your descriptions, there are two possible scenarios in your amplifier: (1) your Yamaha has a separate built-in headphone amp, (2) there is a bad contact in the speaker (protection) relay or selector switch. Could you give me the model number so I can help you troubleshooting the problems more precisely?

      I have done some homework before buying the power transistors for my M-2. I found the price of MJ15022/15023 or 2SC1586/2SA909 ( replacements for 2SC2461/2SA1051) were very reasonable on eBay. Since then, I have been buying the transistors, diodes and zeners from eBay.

      M-2 is capable to bring up the maximum potential of any speakers. In the past, I almost gave up a pair of B&W Matrix One speakers since I can't find a good power amp to match. I have tried Marantz 250, Mark Levinson ML9 or Audio Research D115, but none of them worked. it changed my mind after I used M-2 as the power amp. I just can't believe M-2 can do such magic bring my Matrix One to life again. The Yamaha M-2 for sure is a keeper.

    So why use heat shrink on the LED but not the spliced connections? Why didn’t you check/replace caps? Probably falling out of spec too.

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan  Před 6 lety

      Recap will improve amp's performance greatly. The heat shrink on LED light was made by manufacturer. The wire spliced connection just a temporary fix.

    Just purchased a (Yamaha xm4220 power amp) and red light protection is on, channel d clip light is red also - do you know what this could be? any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan  Před 3 lety +1

      There are two possibilities cause the speaker protection to activate: (1) Defective power amps (XM4220 has 4 channels) which you need to check their outputs ensure the voltage is close to 0 V. (2) Defective protection circuit which also will cause it malfunctions. I suggest to perform the item #10 Protection Circuit Test on page 24 of XM4220 Service Manual.
      If protection circuit works fine, then check all outputs of ea. amp. I think you can find the defective channels and fix them.

      Yamaha M-2 is one of the best power amplifier I have ever owned. In fact, I am using it in my primary stereo system which includes a pair of electrostatics speakers. It fits very well to my speakers which is power hungry and very hard to drive. I have tried other named brand amplifiers but none of them works better than M-2 in my system so far.

      Just bought one tonight and wander if you know are the front meters actually green lights or do they have a green filter gel to make them green? Do you have any suggestions for me on what maintenance to initially do to this amp and I'm not an electrician but have mechanically can do things as I have restored quite a few cassette decks, reel to reel and TT through the years.

      It is a legendary amp. I agree, best amp of any type that I've ever heard.
      I build single ended tube amps because they are simple and easy to fix and work well for jazz.
      There is a misconception that tube amps sound "warm" and fuzzy...not freshly built ones. They are clear, detailed and airy. The M2 sounds like a good tube amp. It's amazing and I wish I could have kept it, but the previous owner who sold me a C2a and M2 for $250 total (because he got them at an estate sale or something and they weren't working properly).
      I felt that I owed it to him to sell it back to him, since I didn't need the power for my room, speakers and music. Still have the C2a though.

      @VintageAudioFan  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The two fuses located at AC power socket are 7A 125V UL SS-2 normal-acting 6.35×31.8 mm cartridge fuses. Also there are 6 fuses (same size) in the power supply PCB: F651,F652 ,F655 & F656 are1.5A 250V and F653 & F654 are1.0A 250V.

      Thank you for your comments. Generally, I check the component's data (for example: transistor's Vcb, Vce, Ic, Pc and hfe) first. If I can't find the original or OEM to replace them, then I will buy substitutes which with same or similar data. I also buy non-functional vintage amps/receivers in order to strip their parts for spare use.
