This Packard is an 18 Foot-Long 1950s Sports Car!

- Check out this 1955 Packard Caribbean from our new exhibition, "Land Yachts: Cruising the Interstate Highways" now at the Audrain Automobile Museum. This “Yacht” was produced during Packard’s last gasp as a premium luxury automobile with the Packard Caribbean sitting atop the brand’s premier offering for 1955. A bigger more powerful engine was just the beginning of Packard’s attempt to satisfy the needs of the successful customers who longed for a luxury vehicle with eye catching style and envy inducing options. Despite a higher price point, the ’55 Packard Caribbean outsold the all-new Cadillac Eldorado, but its success was to last only until 1956 when Packard ceased production in Detroit owing to fragile financial resources caused by their purchase of Studebaker in 1954.

Thanks Donald. I recall as a little one, we traveled to Puerto Rico (early 70’s). An uncle of my father was a Municipal judge there and he drove one everywhere. He (my fathert/s uncle) told me that you had to be in a good place in life to own a Packard but the one specific thing that made me never forget it was that it was a ‘Caribbean’… in the Caribbean. Great man, great car. Thanks again Donald!

We had a '53 Caribbean. It was the first car I ever "drove"...back road with Dad sitting close to me and his left hand on the wheel along with both of mine. I still remember it fondly. A few years ago, I saw what I think was the same car in the collection of the CEO of one of the largest financial institutions in the world. He loved it, too.
I have been fascinated by Packard cars for as long as I can remember. The Caribbean is definitely my favorite of the later cars.

My father was a Packard fan, we had 3 different cars during my first ten years. My first car memory is of the long hood with ornament, and a convertible top operated by pulling a big knob, a 1941 110 convt. Our last Packard was a Clipper DeLuxe, two tone green. Great riding cars. They planted the seed for my future career as a German car technician for 47 years. I'm retired and 71 now.👍
The Packard car museum in Warren, Ohio is right here in our own backyard . If you're a car enthusiast, this it's a must see on your bucket list.

A family friend was a Packard man. He owned a 1956 Caribbean, white, pink and black, with coordinated upholstery. He and his family would visit us often in California, and we always delighted in taking rides. The car had the torsion bar suspension, and I remember my two brothers and two friends, sitting in the open trunk, watching the rear end run back up, then level when they climbed off. The car had full power. We also loved watching the power antennas go up and down and the white top open and fold back. The car also had factory air conditioning, flip up louvers on the dash, but who needed A/C with the top down?

Talking about Studebaker as an old automotive Marquis is like looking at a Conestoga Wagon as America's first example of Horse Power.
I was working on an Oregon Trail tour a couple summers ago and saw that the metal hardware on the wagons were made by Studebaker. The Trail Boss explained that Studebaker started in making parts for horse drawn vehicles. The steel is like Jay talks about with his Ford parts. It just lasts because it's so well alloyed.
Stunningly gorgeous car. Had Packard survived into the 70's they would've produced cars with very powerful engines and luxurious styling. I believe the engineering quality was far superior to many marques of the day. So sad Packard went out of business.

When I was a kid (in the ‘70s), my minister had a collection of Packards and Rolls-Royces. His ‘56 Caribbean was his crown jewel. Same color combination as the one at The Audrain. Such a wonderful car.

I imagine driving this car to Cuba during the pre Castro days. Drive to Miami and take the ferry to Cuba. Then drive to one of the numerous upscale neighborhoods to my winter home.

A wonderful car. At twice the money in 1955 that my father spent on an Olds rocket 88. If you look at the 1959 Simca, there is a slight front end similarity in a smaller car.

Dick Teague is to thank for this beautiful automobile. Packard was tricked into buying Studebaker by the latter’s financials. As a result, Packardbakers drove the nails into Packard’s coffin. A sad ending for a legendary car.

Hi Donald, didn't Packard stick around through 1960? Either way it IS sad they didn't survive, but we still have museums to show our kids what automotive legends are.
1958, technically, but the '57s and '58s were rebadged Studebakers. The corporate parent company was still called Studebaker-Packard Corporation until 1962, when they shortened it back to Studebaker Corp., but the Packard brand name stopped being used in '58. They did have discussions with the French company Facel Vega in the early '60s about maybe importing the Facel Vega Excellence III and selling it under the Packard name, but, by then, S-P had the US distribution rights for Mercedes-Benz, and Daimler-Benz threatened to revoke the deal if they started selling a competitor, so that was the end of the idea.

Elegant presentation. You are just wonderful on Leno too 😆😆😂 a couple points. I think the term "Land yacht" comes across as demeaning, if not then, insulting. Lastly, colors!! Marvelous colors!! Today, the extreme left of boring. Composite Gray, or Simply Silver with black interiors. Non colors.
Interesting to see this car as a "sportscar". But I get the idea. Beautiful example, anyway.

The engine was 352 cubic inches not 327 ,grew to 374 inches in 56

The car shown at 5:27 is not a ZIL, but a GAZ Chaika. It says чайка on the front of the car. Which is Cyrillic script and transliterates as Chaika, which means Gull.
Thanks for watching! For clarification, the ZIL 110, shown at 5:16, is based on the prewar Packard 160, shown at 5:19. The GAZ Chaika copied the styling of the Carribbean.
The 1958-1962 ZiL 111 and 1959-1981 GAZ Chaika M13 were both copied after the 1955 Packard lineup (but with reverse-engineered Chrysler transmission designs).
One of the last true Packard's. After 1956 the Packard plant was closed and production was shifted to the Studebaker plant. The cars produced after that were Studebakers with Packard trim on them. A sad end for a great car!

Rolls-Royce was the British Packard.
During the war the US sent a complete set of Packard tooling and plans to the USSR to make trucks and luxury cars for the war effort.
I wish this had been a more thorough tour of the car. Open the trunk and the hood and get a better look at the interior.

It's ironic that when the average American was smaller, cars were bigger; now that Americans are ...er, plump, cars are smaller and fitted with slim bucket seats.

If It isn’t Nippy, and handles like a Whale, it is NOT A SPORTS CAR.
That's one of the things that makes this passion so interesting! How our definitions and language around this moving art form changes over time as design, engineering, and advertising change what is possible and available. The conversation around these definitions is something that has become the entire basis of exhibitions at the Audrain.
Not a bad looking car overall but not sexy by today’s standards. Looks too conservative and stodgy. I pass.
I think it is an insult to refer to this Disney monster as like in an Italian car. This car epitomizes waste: chrome, weight and size that make it dangerous in bends, torque that cannot be used in the US and wastes fuel, violent interior colors that require sunglasses.
