  • Good lob defense keeps your opponent from taking the upper hand. You can hit an overhead, a drop shot, or a lob in order to combat a lob. For more videos and instructions, check out pickleballinstruction.com.

    This is one of the best lob drill I've seen. Your videos are great, concise and to the point. Thank you!
    Do you have a video on defending an overhead smash?

    great demo of the "curl" to go backward to retrieve the lob safely. I've had people explain it, but your demo in the video really helped! Thanks!

      I know, right? I'm 6'5 and love to play people who lob. I can hit over head angles into the kitchen at 45 degree angles. People just go "Whaaaaat"!

    REALLY like the examples of you running back multiple times...

    The curling around is why I find it's easier for me to get to a lob hit behind my partner. If I'm on the left and the lob is hit behind my partner on the right, I'm now heading back and curling around to hit a forehand. My direction backward isn't straight back - it's at an angle backward - and that is an easier route to the ball in my opinion. Now I'm on the right and yell "switch" so that we're not both stuck on the right. let me know if that makes sense or not.

    NEVER take your eyes off the lob as you run back to get it.

      A good lob is the only time I encourage to take your eyes off of the ball. Getting a read on the path of the ball might require a lot of practice, but it definitely makes you faster and able to get to balls you wouldn't have been able to track down otherwise.

      @@PickleballInstruction The problem, and you demonstrated this in your video, is that you end up running to the wrong spot, have to take time to find where the ball is, and then have to move to the proper position to hit it. All of these cost you time. The other issue is that most people play doubles in pball, not singles. The lob of is responsibility of the person that has the angle, not the person who's head it went over. So the focus is running on an angle to track down the ball, and watch it the whole time. This gets the player to the correct spot in minimal time, ready to hit a return.

      @@dwainsmith448 With all due respect, you likely never played outfield baseball... when the ball is hit over your head, you need to judge the approximate landing spot, sprint to that spot then adjust to catch the ball. I see this as the same concept.

    • @dwainsmith448
      @dwainsmith448 Před 2 měsíci

      @@AnthonyCarucci One key difference is the size of the playing surface and the close proximity of the other player (assuming we are playing doubles). I did play softball. Given the choice, if the ball goes up and you CAN keep your eye on the ball then you should. This would be for conditions where the ball is at an angle and not directly overhead.
      In Pickleball, the teammate is generally closer than an outfield teammate in baseball. So, the teammate ideally runs down the lob over the partner’s head because they have an angle on it and never have to take their eyes off the ball. This allows the player to run to the correct spot more often. The player lobbed over should yell “switch” and slide over and cover the side of the court vacated by the partner running down their lob.
      So due to the size of the court and the close proximity of the partner, it’s better if the partner runs down the lob and the angle to the ball allows for them to never take their eyes off the ball.
