Oh yes Red Beard... I must add that I agree with you as to how tough Georgia is (particularly considering that hiking fitness is at a low point there) but as one hikes much further along the trail one realizes that although the trail in Georgia is tough it doesn't suffer from the rocks and roots underfoot like the northern states.
The way you filmed this gives it an almost RPG like feel haha not just because of the first person but because of everyone's stances and displays of character as your recording as well as the buildings in the area. I was half expecting there to be a variety of mythical beasts you'd have to team up and slay in order to survive the journey. But thankfully everyone gets to keep their head in this day an age and adventure in a relatively peaceful world.

Love the videos. I just got back from sectioning the first 40 miles to Neel Gap in a few days. It's so different in the summer than your late winter videos. Cool, to see the difference and I appreciate your logging the videos to give me some tips.
I feel Toast's pain (literally). I recently did 9 miles on the AT near Hot Springs. It was my first time ever with a backpack (26 lbs), and I am trying to get used to carrying one before setting out on weekend & weeklong hikes. The last 2 miles of downhill were brutal on the knees. Have been doing leg exercises to try to strengthen my muscles around the knee, and I am also considering a brace such as the cho-pat.

Last year, I finally returned to the trail, embracing my status as a section-hiker, chiseling away at the rest of the AT. In 2020, I managed to knock out both NJ and NY over 3 weekends (I live in the NYC area), and then Harpers Ferry to the Delaware Water Gap over 2 weeks in September. If all goes as planned, I’m hiking Virginia in June, starting in late May; and, I also plan on hiking Connecticut and Massachusetts, too, maybe also Vermont.

From someone who's pretty much only seen you outdoors, that Fox Cabin scene made me kinda uncomfortable. Pizza, TV, curtains, fluffy chairs. Just seemed like a different universe.
Great video. That blood Mountain trail is tough especially with all those wet rock slabs and limited sight with the conditions you were hiking in, my personal favorite part of GA, AT (only did GA).
This video was amazing! I hope I get the chance in the near future to do this either by myself or with my wife and pup. Great Information... myself and 3 others are heading to Ga in a few weeks and this sure helped out. One thing I have not found yet is the terrain, like mostly leaves or sharp rocks, slippery rocks?? I am bringing my dog with me and was wondering about sharp rocks and rather or not he will need his boots.

Finna go hike and camp for a couple days. Just two. I need it in my life right now. I have my axe and I'll take enough supplies. Hike around look at the animals... Meditate....do my martial arts in solitude...run...and if possible make a canoe. I'll have to research which wood and stuff first though.

Not sure you'll get to see this, but I was watching you're AT hike again (it's just so relaxing to me, seeing people hike, I have no idea why hahaha) and you mentioned the knee problem quite often. Do you know what generates this? Is it a weight problem, out of shape or something? What do hikers do to prevent it or cure it in trail?
It's called a Runner's knee. I got the same thing while section hiking the trail at exactly where Toast first experienced it, decent to Neel's Gap. Really not much you can do but take your time

What is the greatest resource for hiking the Trail? I am 14 now and hike the trail quite often in the most difficult sections in CT/MASS and want to start planning. I need to figure out how you guys get food, what gear you bring ect. It would be amazing if you could help me out. Thank You!!!
Let me get your read on something. My son and I want to hike a 5 day section of the trail during his summer vacation. We live in Atlanta so the Georgia trail would be a starting place but it looks like it may be tougher than we want as we're doing this for fun and it's his first time hiking for days. Where would be a good starting place as close to Georgia as we can get but with some nice scenery too? Trying to make a lifetime hiker/camper out of him so want a good experience.
Check out the elevation changes from the trail conservancy or the AWOL guide and see what you're comfortable with. I also recommend the Bartram trail. It's also in GA and the first section is relatively flat.
Hey Red Beard, Thanks for this video. A group of us are planning a short run from Neels Gap to Amicalola Falls State Park at the end of May. Have you any advice or experience on that southbound?
Don't have any experience on that section southbound. Climb out of Neels gap to Blood will be the hardest climb on that section i think. Good luck on your hike! Wonderful section for sure!

Beth Ratkewicz well I guess it depends on where you are located honestly. Any hikes on the AT no matter what state are great. In Georgia I would recommend climbing up to Blood Mountain or doing the section from Springer Mt to Neels Gap. 👍🏼
Beth Ratkewicz yeah not a problem. Just make sure and check the weather and pack warm clothes regardless of what it says. It's always much colder up over 3,000-4,000'.

I am section hiking for 21 days starting at Amicalola Falls State Park and getting as far as I get. - Hopefully at least to Franklin but we shall see. Anyway, I have a couple of questions - first, I have read and seen where it is best to cook meals 100-200 feet from your shelter and it is best to hang a bear sack 100 feet or more from your shelter. Is that right? Is there a better way?
almost every shelter had a designated area where you can hang your food bag. it's a steel wire and pulley system. It definitely deters bears, but mice still tend to sneak through sometimes
What is a good under $100 camera to take recordings with ? I was looking at the Ematic EVH528BL. It is what I can afford. Vivitar seems to have some nice ones about that price to.

I have never work the 10's because of the serious defect. Do not purchase the shoes. After 100 miles of use a dime size hole will appear on the inside near the toe box. Within 200 miles it will be a quarter size hole. Check out the shoes I am transitioning to Altra trail runners.
Thanks for quick response and advice: I almost bought a pair. Let us all know which particular Altra trail runners you'll be trying, as well as, if it has a narrow or wide toe box. I have wide feet (EEE), which limits many shoes I can wear. I usually buy shoes 1 1/2 bigger than my size to overcome. I'm currently trying the Hoka one one challenger ATR.
Hey Will I have a few questions you may be able to help me with about the Springer Mt to Ga/NC boarder. I will be walking it next month as my first section of the trail. Just to see if I can actually do it. I have a friend going and we are wondering about parking cars in these two ares. Have you heard of any one being able to do that? +Cliff F yes you can definitely park at springer mountain parking lot and at the border. However I'm not sure exactly where he closest road would be to the border crossing. You might have to do some investigating on that one.

I added up the miles from all 14 states that they have listed on their website and keep getting 1994 miles. Where are these other 200 miles coming from? Could they really be that far off with their mileage on the site?
Hi Red Beard. Thank you for the videos. I'm planning a first section hike from Springer Mt. to Neels Gap. I only have a couple days off (hope I can make the whole way over many years). Question: It seems it took you four days to make this trek. I may have read that wrong. Forgive me if so. Anyway, according to the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, this is 30.5 miles. I know you hiked strong, but why did it take so long? Yes, there are mountains I know. I'm in good shape and thinking I'd make 15 miles a day. That may be unrealistic. But certainly I can do 10 a day, no? I know you are not able to respond to all the messages so I put the question out there to other experienced ATers who are reading this.
Charles Boisseau We started at the start of the approach trail. That adds 8.8 miles to the 31.7 to Neels Gap. We did 11.6, 13, 8.5, 7.4 on each day. My hiking buddy had knee problems and it was the start of a 2,000 mile thru so most hikers start off at 8-14 miles per day. Lots of ups and downs but you shouldn't have a problem doing 15 a day. Im trying to find out if 15 miles a day on the Appalachian is about average or just taking your time. If its anything like Marcy, I dont know if I can do 15 mile 8 hour days I would be dead in a week!! So Im just asking because a lot of people say 15 miles + a day just want to know how many hours of actually walking that would take. I hope that made sense lol I hope to hear from you soon ! -Peace

I do not use go pros. Sony action cameras are better. Sony HDR-AS100V is the one I use. I only use the stickpic. Google it. The rest of the shots I shoot just holding the camera. The stability is incredible

Would you say the Georgia/North Carolina section is doable for novice hikers? I've heard it's pretty moderate terrain, but I'd appreciate any additional insight.
I would definitely say georgia North Carolina section is doable for a novice hiker. There are a ton of ups and downs so make sure your pack weight is light. The reason it's a bit easier is because it's not that Rocky or rooty. Purchase the AWOL Appalachian Trail Guide if you haven't yet. It will help big time! Happy Hiking!

It's called a Runner's knee. I got the same thing while section hiking the trail at exactly where Toast first experienced it, decent to Neel's Gap. Really not much you can do but take your time

Hi! Love your channel! I'm planning a Georgia section hike and starting in NC and going south... what is the best and closest place to have my ride drop me off by the GA/NC line?? What is the greatest resource for hiking the Trail? I am 14 now and hike the trail quite often in the most difficult sections in CT/MASS and want to start planning. I need to figure out how you guys get food, what gear you bring ect. It would be amazing if you could help me out. Thank You!!!
Let me get your read on something. My son and I want to hike a 5 day section of the trail during his summer vacation. We live in Atlanta so the Georgia trail would be a starting place but it looks like it may be tougher than we want as we're doing this for fun and it's his first time hiking for days. Where would be a good starting place as close to Georgia as we can get but with some nice scenery too? Trying to make a lifetime hiker/camper out of him so want a good experience.
Check out the elevation changes from the trail conservancy or the AWOL guide and see what you're comfortable with. I also recommend the Bartram trail. It's also in GA and the first section is relatively flat.
Hey Red Beard, Thanks for this video. A group of us are planning a short run from Neels Gap to Amicalola Falls State Park at the end of May. Have you any advice or experience on that southbound?
Don't have any experience on that section southbound. Climb out of Neels gap to Blood will be the hardest climb on that section i think. Good luck on your hike! Wonderful section for sure!

Beth Ratkewicz well I guess it depends on where you are located honestly. Any hikes on the AT no matter what state are great. In Georgia I would recommend climbing up to Blood Mountain or doing the section from Springer Mt to Neels Gap. 👍🏼

Beth Ratkewicz yeah not a problem. Just make sure and check the weather and pack warm clothes regardless of what it says. It's always much colder up over 3,000-4,000'.

Red Beard, I am starting the trail solo May 9th, everything that I look at bases the weather on a start in March, I wanted to avoid the crowds! Any idea what to expect weather wise?
Cheryl Walters It should be warm during the day and chilly at night, maybe in the high 40's.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions - first, I have read and seen where it is best to cook meals 100-200 feet from your shelter and it is best to hang a bear sack 100 feet or more from your shelter. Is that right? Is there a better way?
almost every shelter had a designated area where you can hang your food bag. it's a steel wire and pulley system. It definitely deters bears, but mice still tend to sneak through sometimes
At the beginning of the AT is there places to get water from Springer to Blood mountain.?
What is a good under $100 camera to take recordings with ? I was looking at the Ematic EVH528BL. It is what I can afford. Vivitar seems to have some nice ones about that price to.

I have never work the 10's because of the serious defect. Do not purchase the shoes. After 100 miles of use a dime size hole will appear on the inside near the toe box. Within 200 miles it will be a quarter size hole. Check out the shoes I am transitioning to Altra trail runners.
Thanks for quick response and advice: I almost bought a pair. Let us all know which particular Altra trail runners you'll be trying, as well as, if it has a narrow or wide toe box. I have wide feet (EEE), which limits many shoes I can wear. I usually buy shoes 1 1/2 bigger than my size to overcome. I'm currently trying the Hoka one one challenger ATR.

Hey Will I have a few questions you may be able to help me with about the Springer Mt to Ga/NC boarder. I will be walking it next month as my first section of the trail. Just to see if I can actually do it. I have a friend going and we are wondering about parking cars in these two ares. Have you heard of any one being able to do that? Parking them would allow us to take each other back and forth at the beginning and the end of the hike.

+Cliff F yes you can definitely park at springer mountain parking lot and at the border. However I'm not sure exactly where he closest road would be to the border crossing. You might have to do some investigating on that one.
You made a comment that you did not like Oboz footwear ! Any particular reason? I looking to begin a thru hike when I retire and am looking for foot what now to wear now for hiking to see what works for me. Thanks.
I added up the miles from all 14 states that they have listed on their website and keep getting 1994 miles. Where are these other 200 miles coming from? Could they really be that far off with their mileage on the site?

Hi Red Beard. Thank you for the videos. I'm planning a first section hike from Springer Mt. to Neels Gap. I only have a couple days off (hope I can make the whole way over many years). Question: It seems it took you four days to make this trek. I may have read that wrong. Forgive me if so. Anyway, according to the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, this is 30.5 miles. I know you hiked strong, but why did it take so long? Yes, there are mountains I know. I'm in good shape and thinking I'd make 15 miles a day. That may be unrealistic. But certainly I can do 10 a day, no? I know you are not able to respond to all the messages so I put the question out there to other experienced ATers who are reading this.
Charles Boisseau We started at the start of the approach trail. That adds 8.8 miles to the 31.7 to Neels Gap. We did 11.6, 13, 8.5, 7.4 on each day. My hiking buddy had knee problems and it was the start of a 2,000 mile thru so most hikers start off at 8-14 miles per day. Lots of ups and downs but you shouldn't have a problem doing 15 a day. Hey thanks for the cool video I subscribed ! Question ! How is the trail terrain ? Like for instance. I hiked Mt. Marcy its only 14.5 miles, but it took me a good 8 hours ! Im trying to find out if 15 miles a day on the Appalachian is about average or just taking your time. If its anything like Marcy, I dont know if I can do 15 mile 8 hour days I would be dead in a week!! So Im just asking because a lot of people say 15 miles + a day just want to know how many hours of actually walking that would take. I hope that made sense lol I hope to hear from you soon ! -Peace
15 miles a day would be tough every day in Georgia terrain. No way is it "taking your time"

You can do it in a week or less. I took a zero day due to my friends knee issues.

I do not use go pros. Sony action cameras are better. Sony HDR-AS100V is the one I use. I only use the stickpic. Google it. The rest of the shots I shoot just holding the camera. The stability is incredible

Usually people do this between big changes in their lives, for example between careers, between college and starting your career life, etc.
Would you say the Georgia/North Carolina section is doable for novice hikers? I've heard it's pretty moderate terrain, but I'd appreciate any additional insight.
I would definitely say georgia North Carolina section is doable for a novice hiker. There are a ton of ups and downs so make sure your pack weight is light. The reason it's a bit easier is because it's not that Rocky or rooty. Purchase the AWOL Appalachian Trail Guide if you haven't yet. It will help big time! Happy Hiking!
