  • The Tokugawa Museum is one of the must stop places on a trip to Mito and Jennifer and I stopped by to see some of the artifacts here like tea cups made by the shoguns and the SWORD OF SEKIGAHARA from the battle in 1600! The original is on display along with a beautiful replica made by the 15th Tokugawa in the Family line.

    The TV show they were talking about was called "水戸黄門- Mito Koumon" which started in late 1960"s. Actor Eijiro Tono made the character really popular with his awesome laugh.

    Just for some clarification..... Mito/Tokugawa Mitsukuni was not the second Tokugawa shogun. The second Tokugawa shogun was Tokugawa Hidetada. Mito/Tokugawa Mitsukuni was the second daimyo of the Mito domain. He was a cousin of the third Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. The Mito branch of the Tokugawa was one of the branches eligible for the title of shogun, but Mitsukuni himself was never shogun. I enjoyed the video. It looks like an interesting and fun place to go. When I was living in Japan, I enjoyed going to museums.

    If I spent more than half a day at the Hiroshima Peace memorial museum, I can't help wondering how much longer I'd have spent at this Tokugawa Museum. That's where the heart of the Japan Unification lies. Sad that places like these are not pushed as a tourist destination, especially for history buffs, and it's but a short ride from Tokyo. Thanks for bringing us here, John and Jennifer.

    John, How do I get to mito with JR pass? I got this free JR pass for 7 days, Can I go with shinkansen? Or just express train? From which station? How long do you need to walk from the station to the museum? Please answer:)

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  Před 6 lety +1

      +Najiyya Hafiyati a lot of questions! Did you try google maps? It not only tells you the trains, but the cost and distance! You can pick the location of origin.
      You have to take the JR HITCHI EXPRESS from UENO STATION or ride the usual JOBAN LINE to get to Mito. You can use the JR RAIL PASS. It’s a 30 walk through the park from the station. The map is in the description.

      There’s a live stream of rapid comments and I have to balance what you see with what you don’t. I do the best I can. There’s no English in the museum so we have to do the best we can on the spot, but not making the video does not get people to learn more about the background of Japan or think about coming here. Thanks.
