He gets them to the point where they feel like marriage may be on the table and then he leaves them.
I'm not a behavior analyst, but I notice the same thing. His response was indirect and all over the place. I also noticed that it was only a short clip of a portion of an interview. I would prefer to see the interview in its entirety before reaching an absolute conclusion.
