Interesting story about Rodriquez's tour in South Africa. I was living in Pretoria on a one year detail at the time of his concerts including the huge stadium concert in Johannesburg and my good friend, Ian Edelstein, asked me if I wanted to go see Rodriquez, the legend. I told him I was very familiar with almost any American act in rock but never heard of the guy. Ian was incredulous and could not believe that I had never heard of him in the U.S. Needless to say I did not go to the concert and it was not until the documentary came out a few years ago that I even knew this was the singer/songwriter that my friend was talking about! After watching the documentary, I just fell in love with the man, his music, his impact and the timeliness of his songs. And, to think that I could have actually seen in during this incredible period of his "rebirth". Ian, wherever you are my friend, I blew that one!! You were right all along....the guy is a super legend!

Sixto Rodriguez spent 30 years of back-breaking hard work in construction and living in poverty, but look at him now, listen to it! Bam - fits place for musicians like Dylan or Springsteen, easily you wouldn't believe it, but he was ignored by the Media in the seventies, only because for his Latin origin, although he was not a prophet in his own land, his songs were the voice of inspiration in South Africa, giving freedom to a captive people and that's why that he still a Sugarman
Documentaries like looking for SugarMan and a band called death is making me wonder how many great bands were stolen and never be remembered, He won a new world, but his own country lost to enjoy this such amazing talent during all these years

He was on a tour apparently (Canada) and I spoke with the guy at the pizza restaurant where he always have pizza. Went past his house and also past the house of Sugerman, the drugdealer. Wonderful memories and wonderful music.

Rodriguez was so cool and humble. A pure working class Chicano from Motown. A true working man from our nation's decaying cities and a true artist who made art no matter his circumstances. It was such a great documentary and such a great story. I was fascinated by how his songs were the soundtrack for the white anti racist Afrikaners who fought apartheid, who protested in the colleges and universities against the inhumanity of apartheid and how the Peoria government banned his songs and people bootleged copies. It shows us why Madiba wanted unity with white south Africans because he knew a lot of whites and Indians fought alongside blacks and were imprisoned as well. There is a lot of history in the film and it explains why this music caught on with the anti racist Afrikaners in cape town and jo burg. So proud of this fellow Latino. A great ambassador for the north american working man.

He caught on with both Afrikaner and “English” South Africans. His and Johnny Clegg’s stories are two of the greatest stories in all of music. They showed the power of music to motivate and mobilize people and to change hearts.
