Thanks Nick, I don't do choppers , but this a great way to see a city like LA.

This is great! I live in LA and I just got the simulator yesterday so this was a perfect video.
39:01 The water canal you were mentioning is probably the LA River or some offshoot of it, it's a natural river that was eventually set into a fixed course with concrete channels built in the early 20th century after some pretty devastating floods which rocked the city. After particularly rainy days in the city or snowy days in the Santa Susana mountains the river gets pretty filled up and runs pretty fast then it dies down after a few days and very large bushes start to grow in the center as soil settles and the water level gets lower + some parts of the river still have earthen beds which allows stuff to grow as well.

So the sim got it right! Awesome. If I can get my throat to cooperate, I'm going to try recording our second leg tonight. Speaking of canals, I misidentified the one north of Burbank. When we first got into the Valley, I spotted one and mentioned it. After a much closer look on the satellite map, I could see cars down there, so it is a highway of some kind. I'll issue a retraction in the next vid. Then again, I should've known ... there was no water or bushes in it!

Great video. Yes, as someone else mentioned, the "drain channel" next to all the studios is the L.A. river. The bridge in Pasadena is probably the Colorado Street Bridge over the Arroyo Seco. When the US Bank Tower opened, it was the First Interstate Bank Center, before they were bought out by US Bank. I started learning to fly helicopters (R22) at VNY, and then moved over to WHP, so I know that area pretty well. The FBO I was renting from would allow 1hr in a Jetranger for the same price as an R22, for every 10hrs of R22 rental. So I flew, with an instructor, and three friends in the back, actually around all of the downtown buildings (this was pre-9/11, in about 1986). We didn't land on any of the downtown helipads.

That is awesome! Are you still flying? And, just to satisfy my curiosity, what was the pricing structure for chopper rentals? I'm trying to cobble together funds for my PPL and there's no way in heck I can afford a plane, so I've been checking out local rentals for planes, too.

@@MSFSFlightPlans I haven't flown for a few years now, although I do intend to do so again. I received my PPL in the UK in the late '70s, and then moved to L.A. in 1982 (and converted my CAA license to an FAA license). I was first flying just fixed-wing (for about half the price of UK rentals) and then started flying R22s because a) it wasn't "too" expensive and b) it was fun! In the mid-late '80s, IIRC I was paying about $60/hr for a C172 and $120/hr for an R22. Not so cheap now! Good luck with your flying!

Really cool seeing where all those famous places are located. Lots of places I've heard about but don't know where is other than in or near LA. Man, I learn a lot from your channel!😃👍Looking forward to the next one.

I've been flying all over the city tonight trying to map out our second leg. It's hard to say which I like better at this point. That Six Flags addon set such a high bar that anything less than perfection is slightly disappointing. Wait until you see the lackluster effort that went into the coasters at the Venice Beach pier. But at least there is none of that weird, flat, runny stuff going on for this leg.

That is why I fly MSFS, to see new places.
It is also why I don’t like commercial flights.

Yeah, the liners were my shortest phase of simming. I got really into it initially because I enjoyed learning how they work, I also liked figuring out how all the air traffic routes and FMCs operate. But once you're up there, you just stare at the tops of clouds for hours on end. So the luster wore off fairly quickly for me with the big planes. I do still hop in from time to time just enjoy the complexity of getting them started.

Super cool flight, thanks for sharing. I love flying around this part of LA. Van Nuys and Whiteman have a lot of helicopter traffic IRL, definitely not helping the noise complaints.

As we were flying up there, and on the second leg in western LA, for that matter ... I couldn't stop thinking about what a frantic traffic jam ATC must be out there.

@@MSFSFlightPlansif you’re interested in flying on Vatsim, I’m part of a small community of heli enthusiasts who enjoy flying the real world procedures around LA, NY, and Boston. It’d be great to have you

    • @MSFSFlightPlans
      @MSFSFlightPlans  Před 5 měsíci

It's funny you said that. Just this morning, I turned the ATC back on in the sim. I've been flying so long without it that I wanted to brush up on some procedures just to make sure I could still work through everything. I did it all the time when I was in career mode, but you know how it is with the AI controllers ... you just click a button without having to think much about it. I'd really like to take a crack at Vatsim just to get more of an authentic feel, but I'm afraid communications protocols are such a weak spot for me that I would just gum up the flow for everyone else. I've heard they occasionally have some "starter" regions with less traffic and more neophytes. Maybe I should look into that.
I bet it is even more fun with the helis since you aren't just punching vectors into the AP but really have to navigate the thing to track properly.

The last three times I have flown a helicopter over LA in my Pimax Crystal I have fried my RAM. Not sure what the problem with that locale is because I can fly over other demanding areas with no issues. And I am running a 7800X3D and 4090 both water cooled along with 64GB of G.Skill RAM.

I had to strip down to my underwear because my sim room turned into a furnace during the flight. It sounded like a Vision Jet was taxiing around in there.
