Picnic at Hanging Rock - Ascent Theme Music with Whoosh!

- A recreation of the original film-score music of the Ascent theme from Picnic at Hanging Rock by Bruce Smeaton.
This is a remixed version, (with added 'whoosh'!) of my YT video with piano score (v=uLbKqqILBD8).
I had a request to add the sound-effect that's in the film at the point where Miranda says "Look!". So I have.
I've also remixed the levels of the various instruments to make it sound even more like the original as my score version had the piano a little more forward in the mix since that video was primarily put up on YT for the piano score itself.
As with my previous video though, this is NOT an absolutely exact recreation. Rather, it is how I would have liked it to be.
By this, I mean it's how I would have mixed and processed it had I been involved in the production.
I admit, the bass pedals may be a little too loud for some, but I love that fat bottom end! :)
So that's what we have here. I hope my musical choices haven't ruined your enjoyment of the piece.
I hasten to add that I do NOT mean to detract from the actual original film mix!! It is what it is and I still love it :)
I've simply done this video because it seems impossible now to get hold of just the original music without all the dialogue and other sounds.
There IS a version on the net that seems to use phase-inversion and other techniques to try to remove the centre channel (which contains the dialogue etc.) from the original soundtrack, but in doing so, has unfortunately also severely reduced the piano level too...!
To be honest, I think that that version is a travesty of the original so I hope I'm actually giving listeners a more accurate taste of the original :)
Because this video focuses on the music instead of the score, I've added the video sequence from the original film that corresponds to the music to give it some context.
The whole thing is actually very Genesis-like (circa 1973) - Firth of Fifth style piano plus Mellotron choirs & strings, Moog Taurus bass pedals and a touch of Gabrielesque flute...
Not to mention that Hawkwind's Hall of the Mountain Grill bears more than a passing resemblance...! :)
Whilst on the subject of the greatest band ever (IMHO), if you like this then my channel has a few Genesis vids you may be interested in... :)
The audio was made using Presonus Studio One 3 with the following plugins:
Piano - XLN Audio Addictive Keys
Mellotron Choir & Strings - GForce M-Tron Pro
Bass Pedals - Arturia Modular V3
Flute - Spitfire Audio Flute Consort
'Whoosh' - u-he Diva - Hudba
Picnic at Hanging Rock is an Australian historical fiction novel by Joan Lindsay (source: Wikipedia et al).
Although written as if it were a true story, the events depicted did not actually happen.
There are plenty of websites around with more info about the book, film and recent TV series.
I simply love the piano music from the 1975 Peter Weir film which I've attempted to recreate here ;)
With respect I don't believe anyone can say that, categorically, the events upon which the film, and book are loosely based, did not happen. I certainly agree that anything that MIGHT have occurred back then would have been significantly different to how they are depicted in the film. But I am of the opinion that there is at least some limited basis of fact.
@@gerardhennessy3586 Fair enough but your opinion is based on what? I can't find anything by Joan Lindsay that gives any indication that she utilised any real events in creating her novel. Mind you, I haven't looked exhaustively as I'm just a musician and not a scholar 🤣 so there may well be stuff I haven't uncovered. If you know of something to indicate to the contrary, I'd definitely be interested in seeing it 👍
Oh, the spooky nostalgia. Like remembering something that never happened.
I’m Australian from this part of Australia!! Who wrote this piece

@@PassionJo777 Bruce Smeaton wrote this piece. It's called "The Ascent".
This film plays a dream, because it is one. What a haunting, poetic movie. Amazing film.
If ever a piece of music could be the soundtrack for the year 1975 then this could be it. Prog perfection.
Everything begins and ends at the exactly right time and place.
Miranda! Dont go up there!!!!
"A dream within a dream."
Before Inception there was "Picnic at Hanging Rock".
Impressive theme music. Really evokes the sinister and mysterious feeling of the scene.
Yes it does, and the majesty of the Australian bush
Mesmerizing music for a mesmerizing movie. Miranda: you can't forget her. Thanks for sharing.
Likely the most entrancing and otherworldly Bermuda Triangle mystery in all of fiction.
Absolutely love this movie.
Not down at the ground Edith! Way up there in the sky!
Masterpiece
I love the whole soundtrack. Its an Aussie classic.Just perfection ❤
God what a piece of music. The chills
as mysterious as the Rock itself.
Mistero, magia, suggestioni metafisiche...musica e immagini indimenticabili!
Haunting movie and soundtrack. Love the dream like scenes
Miss you Miranda always.I saw you alive on are Melbourne train recently.I was to scared to say hello to one of my idols But thank you for, to see you was are beautiful dream !!
A dream within a dream.
I remember reading an interview with actress Anne-Louise Lambert (Miranda) where she recounted how shortly after the release of this movie, she was stopped by two women in the street. Wide-eyed, one asked "Are you that girl who went missing on Hanging Rock?" Miss Lambert said yes, and braced herself for the usual autograph request (selfies weren't invented back then) Instead, the woman turned to her companion and said "You can see her too, right?"
As someone who produces this style of 70's soundtrack music - you did a phenomenal job capturing (and improving on) the original masterpiece! Kudos.
I loved this movie. Sometimes, the mysteries of the universe should stay mysterious.
Those chord changes are to die for! What creativity... bravo!
Living Proof The progressions were written as such to simulate the climbing of the mountain. With each modulation, they were climbing to another level.
It’s majestic
Incredible music….
So incredibly beautiful! Wonderful key changes ❤
l'ho visto da bambino e sono rimasto impressionato. Adesso sono un adulto di 50 anni e ancora mi impressiona.
The most beautiful music from a beautiful film (even if it is not the exact original).

I remeber this music and movie so well. As I lived in Australia and went to that same place it was very tence feeling. The movie was great ad it did remember me of my childhood days living there.

This is fantastic. I’m so glad this exists in high quality. It’s such a great recreation.
breathtaking.
Well done mate
Wow, great video! And thank you for the detailed description of steps taken to create it. Was a pleasure to listen to, as well as it was to read the commentary. Really well done on both counts!
Find a Millennial film director that could re create this classic ANSWER no one.
Yeah that recent mini series fell well short of the mark too and they knew it.

@@TheWaynos73 Bruce Smeaton deserves 5 stars for the Ascent theme like Peter said music confuses the intellect and that sound as the girls walked up the hill was magnificent a feeling of doom.
No way. There’s talent in every generation
I often play this on the piano much to the delight of my family! I don't really care for the main theme that is played on the panpipes tho.
Me too, and I have to say it is one of the most murderously hard pieces I ever played. It took me months to learn and even now I don't feel like I ever truly mastered it. So kudos to you, and to Bruce Smeaton for composing something both haunting and fiendishly difficult
@@chooseyourpoison5105 well done mate! At least you have mastered it, that’s the main thing! Each time you play it, I think it will get easier and then one day you’ll just sit down at the piano and play it automatically without a second thought and wonder what the struggle was all about! Keep going and just think of it as only different chords played in progression. Even at the key changes they follow the same pattern. Good luck 😀
Awe-inspiring recreation with the "whoosh" - love it!
Truly BRILLIANT and beautiful 🎋🎋🎋

Il mio film preferito, il tenue confine tra realtà e sogno. Il Mondo dei Sogni, da cui tutto viene e a cui tutto ritorna eternamente.
Omg. This is thrilling. Wonderful job. And no, it doesn't detract from the original---makes me want to watch it again. Thank you.
Thank you too :) A shame a couple of people seem to think otherwise but, you can't please everyone :)
Elektrik Hob I'm afraid some people just don't get what you were doing here. I love it and will watch it again and again, just like I do the movie itself. I think this adds to the whole PAHR experience
@@ElektrikHob Back again and thanks again!
@@ElektrikHob Back again because today is August 14. I know St. Valentine's Day is February 14 but here in the States, it's winter then. On August 14, our weather is very like the weather in PAHR so I like to revisit this marvelous mystery and its beautiful music.
Could anybody explain why this music keeps reminding me of the score on De Palma's Carrie during her death scene?
Such a difficult piece to try and play on piano too.
fantastic
Of these four girls, only two remain alive as of 2021; one is in Australia and the other moved to the U.S.
I assume you're refering to the actresses that played the characters in the film...
@@ElektrikHob Greetings, yes, that is correct. The ones playing Irma and Miranda are still around. RIP to the other two.
Oh boy! You've "done it" again! You mentioned that this version is slightly different (apart from the added whoosh effect) than your other one, as you've tweaked it a little more the way you'd like it, and I like what you did. This one got my attention, not just the whoosh (which is striking and piercing) but I mean before and after that. I was going to say that listening to your version sounded even better the second time around, but that is probably your adjustments, which I agree are a bit of an improvement. It's hard to describe but this version has more presence. Could be the visuals too (I got goosebumps - "Not down at the ground Edith, way up there in the sky!" - I really like that whoosh!) but I'm not just talking about that, I mean the instrumentation balance or whatever else you've done to it. And that flute! It's better, although not by much since your other version was so good. I love them both. Next time I'm driving into a forest near mountains I'm going to be playing this on my stereo. Thank you again. You're good at what you do.
I wonder if someone is ever going to try and remake this movie? Mission being: don't leave the audiences hanging on the rock, bring in the UFO's, and make it the start of a blockbuster alien abduction series - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I would imagine that TW59 understands that :)
I think you'll find that his comment about it being remade as an alien abduction blockbuster series was extremely tongue-in-cheek...!! :)
+Elektrik Hob - Hello. Yes my comment on the alien abductions was EXTREMELY tongue in cheek. :-) But since then they now are making a new version as a series! But it looks to be far too "contemporary" for my taste. I'll check it out, and some parts of it may be good. But compared to Weir's masterpiece? I think they realized it would be futile to try and compete with that directly, so they've come up with a "gritty, rock and roll" (not my words!) version of the story they figure they can sell to a younger audience (and feminists). Oh well... I wonder what they'll do with the music?
I think they just dissolved into existence.
or non-existence… dam dham nam tarn tham dam dham nam pam pham. 👹
@@ElektrikHob well... I think this "non-existence" to which they dissolved is non-existence of individual forms but that is actually real existence from which everything generates.... just like when river flows to the ocean, it doesn't dissapear in the ocean, she becomes ocean...
@@Masa-we2fu - my reply was extremely toungue-in-cheek and only really makes sense if you've read Julian May's awesome "Intervention" 😉
I think the "hanging rock" was a euphemism for a gigantic gigac0ck, entering puberty, entering adulthood, being drawn to the danger of adulthood itself due to instinct, etc. The book was based on a woman's dream-- she was probably having some symbolic dream about the experience of puberty for some girls, loss of virginity, and how sometimes entering the world of human s3xuality "erases" the dreams/life plans of girls-- they end up dissolving and life suddenly revolves around being the man's servant and having his kids (at least back in those days). A woman's window of "value" to men and society at large is very brief-- you're only precious when you're hot, young and fvckable.
In this case, it's like the rock itself chose the girls to be part of it's harem for eternity. It's like the earth reclaimed it's fertility Goddesses.
The teacher who disappeared was trying to save the girls, she was "collateral damage".
I think one of the points the author was trying to make was that some mysterious and unexplained things in the world are meant to remain as such. There will always be phenomenon we humans can't understand, and that will never be able to comprehend-- like the mystery of the rock.
Hey. Anything with Taurus pedals and Mellotron in is a winner for me
Absolutely! 😂
Tangerine Dream ?
Cottage theme and lily and all that
If they ascended, does that mean they ascended into a higher dimension, per the new age term?
of course, but in a traditional way
Naw. The gigantic pulsating "hanging rock" reclaimed it's Goddesses, to enter them into his eternal rock harem.
This mysterious and ominous theme looks really similar to these two songs from Final Fantasy IX, "Memories of that day" czcams.com/video/hWn5CkA_a-4/video.html and "Danger in the forest" czcams.com/video/-LcE0vE4bes/video.html
the last one after minute 1:30.
❤👍🙏😘 ❤
I can’t pin down the meter. Is it in 19????
Found the score. 17. I’ll be damned.
Listen to the song Hall of The Mountain Grill by Hawkwind... is it just me or is this not a hard rip of that song...? Love both though
As I mention in the video info (SHOW MORE) above 😉
Here's a comment I wrote on the original piano score video too:
Being a composer myself, I'd say with a fair degree of certainty that BS was probably aware of 'Grill' - based on 'Grill' being 1974 & 'Ascent' being a year later...
To me, the arpeggiated figure and abrupt key changes are too close in both pieces to be mere coincidence…
However, I do feel that BS has developed the original idea extensively enough that it should be considered his own work.
Just my opinion of course :)
Maybe though, it's the other way around; SH somehow heard BS's original idea and adapted it for Hawkwind...!
Who knows??!!
@@ElektrikHob Ah didn't spot that you'd drawn the comparison too! When I noticed it while watching the film I was sure I couldn't have been the only one with just HOW similar they are. I imagined that perhaps BS/Peter Weir and co. had used Grill as temp music when working out ideas for the score, and perhaps it just stuck... so they decided to create a very similar composition. But that's just speculation! There's a great video essay on CZcams that you might've seen called 'A Theory of Film Music' which talks about how often that happens in film soundtrack composition.
@@madcreator12 Never heard of this song before but you are absolutely right.
Also reminds me of an instrumental part of Selling England by the Pound by Genesis (not the title track, one of the others but can't remember the name. Might be the one about Father Tiresius). Who cares, I love prog and when it's paired with these beautiful images it's sublime. Love those elegant Edwardian clothes. ❤
@@W124phreakwas it firth of fifth?
I press the makers of the Remake the thumbs. But i m pessimitic. The Original seems unattainable.
The original probably never will turn up. On the other hand I doubt you'll get any better than this version right here. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be (last time I checked - I must check again) any versions of the other spooky sound effects authored by Mr. Smeaton. For example, the effects heard when those searching the rock seem to come under it's spell. I'd love to have a good version of that music and associated sound effects in nice stereo quality, but someone with the talent of Elektrik Hob would have to set his mind to it like he did with this to bring that off, and that wouldn't be easy at all. Or Mr. Smeaton himself perhaps. Can always re-watch the movie to hear it though. The modern versions (the directors cuts) while leaving out large bits of the original I like, still allow us to hear better quality versions of the music including the spooky sound effects bits.
Help me please, I want to know something about it, they were killed or they vanished away to somewhere?
no one know, but I read a theory that the rock has a portal to another time place, like time machine..
It is fictional. The original novel was rewritten by the authoress with the ending removed and the third chapter entirely rewritten to reflect what is seen on the movie. Years after the death of the authoress (I forget her name), there was published 'The Secret of Hanging Rock' (extremely difficult to get hold of a copy now) that had an explanation and the original vision of the authoress. It explained that the the missing school girls and their teacher, Greta McCraw encountered a mystical manifestation, morphed into insects (ants if I remember correctly) crawled into the rocks and entered into another dimension.
Edit: The authoress is Joan Lindsay, I have just seen this on the description to this video.
