      I still think Schumacher would have kicked his ass, during the first three race meetings, Senna never seemed to have the upper hand other than in qualifying. In race trim, it was a different story. Schumacher certainly looked faster in Brazil and Imola and at Aida, well Senna just made a bad start. Even if he would have avoided the self-inflicted melee of the start and first corner, I doubt very much that he would have been able to exploit the Renault's horsepower advantage on such a tight track. It looked to me like following the disappointment and surprise trouncing at Brazil; that Senna was reacting negatively to the immense pressure that he was under. After all, everyone did expect him to win in 1994. Most expected him to win easily.

    • @sfugid
      @sfugid Před 9 lety +26

      Mr18000rpm Yes but they were already figuring out what was the problem with the car..Berger said that when talking with Senna in Imola he said that the "problem" would be fixed in 2-3 weeks which correlates with the introduction of the FW16B and the considerable improvement in results that Williams had for the remaining races.Hill challenged Schumacher until the last race when the latter had to thrown his car at Hill's in order to win the championship.
      I think that Senna would won in 94(by a slight margin over Schumacher).
      Also the FW17 was the best car of the grid in the 95 season.But Hill got a series of bad luck/incompetent crashes and shunts that made the Bennetton(that was even better than 94 with the Renault engines) and Schumacher's life more easy than the previous year.

    • @Mr18000rpm
      @Mr18000rpm Před 9 lety +9

      Yes but, 2 or perhaps 3 mistakes by Senna in the opening three races would lead one to believe that perhaps more were coming from him. At 34 years old Senna's best days were behind him. Contrast that with Schumacher who had a couple of excellent years under his belt was miles fitter than anyone on the grid. In hindsight we can also say that if any combination could beat a Newey design, it was Byrne/Schumacher. We can look into the FIA's heavy punishment of the Benetton team for passing on the parade lap and whether that would have played out the same way should Ayrton had survived to fight another day. I think that Ayrton would have made it closer, but I also think that the FIA would not have taken 4 results away from Michael and the Benetton team. The FIA's heavy punishment of the Benetton team is the real and only reason that 1994 championship came down to the last race. Finally, if Ayrton would have been fortunate enough to survive the Imola weekend, who is to say that he would have been fit enough to be 100 percent by next race.

      Wow, great question. I saw Imola 1994 live and have read numerous publications magazines, books, etc. in the 22 years since then. There is a lot in print that is not on the internet. It may have been that large book by Damon Hill, or it was more likely the Williams book I quoted when I wrote the wikipedia article on FW16. "featured power-assisted steering, hydraulically driven and reacting to input from electronic sensors, a system that drew heavily from the knowledge gained from the teams active suspension technology." was one of the quotes I remember using from the book. I was an idiot for not including references on the wiki page. But then again there are not THAT many books on the Williams team of that era.

    It does just have a darkness to it though. All of the other cars you mentioned dont quite have the same mystique. They are all gorgeous cars of which id love to see race again, but this certain car actually strikes me as being scary for some reason. It's almost like the Christine of Formula 1, or James Dean's Porsche. The 126C2 still strikes me as a fun and beautiful car, yet the FW16 just comes off menacing. Perhaps this is due to the mystery surrounding the crash. Id still love to drive it :)

    • @weallfollowmanutd
      @weallfollowmanutd Před 4 lety +10

      There's no mystery. No other car went off through that curve, unless there was a major technical problem. No car would go off there, even with bad handling. It was an easy flat out curve. The g load just as he lost it, went to 0.5, from 3g. Meaning the steering was lost. There's another video on CZcams where the front wheels are not attempting to turn left after he goes straight. In fact, they steer straight, pointing to a steering failure from a botched weld on the steering column.

    • @ellisjackson3355
      @ellisjackson3355 Před 3 lety +2

      @@weallfollowmanutd I don't dispute that the steering column broke. I just don't quite understand why would the lateral g INCREASE from 0.5 to 3 if he LOST steering midway through the corner? You have the centripetal force pulling you through the corner causing that lateral g, then the steering brakes and you suddenly lose that centripetal force. Would the car have lost lateral g then (at least in the timeframe between steering loss and impact with the wall)?

There was quite a hold up while the marshalls went round the track clearing the snow away from the side of the track and thawing any damp patches. Ayrton still went out 'flying' in a car he had never driven before, mightily impressive. I can never get over the fact that one of the elite teams in F1 altered the position of the steering wheel of a multimillion dollar race car by splicing a piece of steel tubing onto the existing steering column. That makes NO fucking sense. How hard could it have been to REPLACE IT WITH A LONGER STEERING COLUMN???? I swear that if I had been an engineer on that Williams team and saw that being done I would have immediately said HEY MORONS, VERY BAD IDEA.

      Senna was ok with it and as opposed to common belief the column didn't break prior to the crash. There are many videos on still existing Williams cars from that season that prove that the column position is flexible and moving if pulled and pushed and that the movement is totally compliant with the footage of the steering wheel movement seconds prior to Senna's crash. One of these videos is contained in a documentary by National Geographic.

      Scoopy No. At first iteration, they messed up the aero packaging, and the front wing was far too high off the ground by design, which made it exceptionally more difficult to drive at high speed, adding to the dissatisfaction Ayrton got from his car. By Imola, this was fixed, but the retards at Williams jerry rigged his steering column ensuring at least he would retire. But no, he ended up with the worst luck a person can have on that Sunday and expires immediately. It is shockingly sad that amateur hour mistake caused this tragedy that will never stop hurting to us who loved him. Regards.

      The VO is done by Allard Kalff, he was the Pit Reporter for RTL GP and a Dutch Touring Car driver for most of the 90s.
      Also, we borrow the word for Engineer, from French, hence the pronunciation.

    I can’t look at this car without feeling pure hatred for it. You can’t call it revolutionary or great performing or great handling or anything. Mclaren/Toleman all took input of Senna. Williams went for the easy route and well, we know what happened after that
