Fez el Bali is the oldest district of Fez founded between 789 and 808 by the Idrissids. It contains some of the most beautiful buildings in Morocco, including the two monuments built in the 9th century, the Andalusian Mosque and the Quaraouiyine Mosque. The immense medina of Fez has retained its medieval structures.
Fez el Bali is completely car-free. It includes around 10,000 streets, generally very narrow (1 meter wide or less, a few meters at most), and they are, for practical reasons, without cars and sometimes even without motorbikes due to the fairly frequent stairs. . Cycling is not easy there for the same reasons. With 156,000 inhabitants in 2002, the medina of Fez el-Bali has a very high population density of around 55,000 inhabitants/km². It is arguably the largest contiguous car-free area in the world today. By comparison, even Venice is home to only 55,000 inhabitants.
