  • 16 Horsepower was a Denver-based American country rock band formed in 1992 by David Eugene Edwards and Pascal Humbert, initially joined by Jean-Yves Tola. Originating from Los Angeles, where they crossed paths working on movie sets, the trio later settled in Denver, where they expanded to include Keven Soll, known for his mastery of the double bass. Renowned for their fusion of traditional bluegrass, gospel, and Appalachian sounds with rock, their music delved into themes of religion, conflict, redemption, and guilt, often through Edwards's evocative lyrics.
After initially performing as Horsepower, they changed their name to 16 Horsepower, drawing inspiration from a folk song depicting sixteen horses pulling a coffin. Their intense live performances earned them a devoted following as they toured extensively across North America. Despite facing misconceptions regarding their name's association with heroin, they signed with A&M Records and released their debut EP in 1995, followed by their acclaimed full-length album, "Sackcloth 'n' Ashes," in 1996.
Lineup changes marked their journey, with Humbert transitioning to bass and Jeffrey-Paul Norlander and Steve Taylor joining on guitar at different points. Their sophomore album, "Low Estate," produced by John Parish, showcased their evolving sound. However, internal differences led to shifts in the band's lineup, ultimately culminating in their breakup in 2005, attributed mainly to political and spiritual disparities among members.
Despite their disbandment, the legacy of 16 Horsepower endures through the continued musical endeavors of its former members, notably in groups like Wovenhand and Lilium. Through their distinct blend of musical styles and poignant lyricism, 16 Horsepower left an indelible mark on the landscape of alternative country rock.
