Female computer programmer here: one thing that wasn't mentioned is that it's a male-dominated profession where there's often a lot of bias against women. That guy saying his partner's code was "convoluted"? I wonder if he just didn't understand it and assumed she did a bad job. The tutor saying it would be easier to write in another language? I wonder if that's the language the tutor was more familiar with.
The partner was clearly trying to be accommodating by letting him rewrite everything she'd done, and her only mistake seems to be underestimating how much time it would take for her to learn what may have been an ENTIRELY NEW PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE in order to do one last part. It sounds like she could have finished the whole thing by herself in the language they originally agreed on. And he wasn't even allowed to use a tutor?! My jaw hit the floor.

As a woman that studied a CS Major, I've always run into men that want to mess up my grade and generally make working with them impossible. One time, I had to spend an entire day at the college library/data center working on code with my project partner. He then proceeded to ask if this counted as a date because we had spent the day together, and when I simply stated that we're just working on a project, he decided to sabotage my part of the work at every chance he got. Even started calling me a trator because at some point he asked me to be his gf and I declined. Another project partner stole my work and presented it in front of class because his presentation day was a whole day before mine.
I feel like being a woman in a male-dominated work/study environment can be extra harsh. Every woman I meet in these kinds of work/study environments had has eerily familiar or relatable experiences to mine.

Female programmer with a CS degree here, when I was in school there was this arrogance of few male students(not all) having better grades than females and didn’t do anything to help them whether as a tutor or group partner. They would always intimidate or assume all females will drop out or fail their classes before changing majors. So they do that to reduce the numbers.

Second story: I would bet money that the whole family is toxic and this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. The mother knew the brother and his gf were going to announce their pregnancy and instead of discouraging it she helped them. They got photos with everyone but those family members…. It seems like whatever is going on is a lot deeper than this one incident. Instead of uninviting them they let them come however they wanted to avoid any of their bs so they left. Which if the family is really toxic might be the best thing to do.

About the coding story: something I haven’t seen anybody mention so far is the fact that she will FAIL the course unless he clears things up with the professor. Not only will that tank her GPA, but also impact her financially! College tuition is insanely expensive, and scholarship/grant money usually doesn’t cover courses you have to repeat because you failed! Not only is OP a MAJOR asshole, he’s also potentially putting his classmate into the hole for thousands more dollars in tuition. What an absolute scumbag.

@@ItsMeBarnaby Alright, let’s recap this slowly with a new example:
You’re in an English lit class with Shakespeare. For your final project, Shakespeare writes the entirety of Macbeth, and all you gotta do is insert the stage directions into the script. Except, English isn’t your first language. So you ask Shakespeare and your professor if you can write the script in German instead. Your professor says that’s okay, so you pay a German speaker to translate everything Shakespeare wrote to German. You go in and add the stage directions in German. Then, you turn the script in and claim it’s all your own work when really you put zero original thought or ideas into the plot, dialogue, setting, story. Shakespeare gets angry with you and you tell him “tough shit, not my problem”. But all you did was plagiarize. See how that would make you a major asshole?
Keep in mind that the story is written from OP’s perspective (aka the party who has a vested interest in fudging some details to make themselves look better) and it’s still ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that he’s the asshole. It’s not “making the woman the victim”: it’s basic listening comprehension skills. If you can’t understand that, set up an appointment to get checked by a neurologist- ya got some brain worms there, bud.

Either the OP just left the detail out of her, saying "I don't know Rust that well" or that didn't come up which would at most be odd. All in all though, converting code is not creating code.

Yep, I've done some amateur coding just to learn a skill. Pseudo-code, understanding the logic of computer systems, and being able to translate that logic into the language you're using is a must. That's the whole point of the assignment in a classroom setting. Obviously in any academic situation, choosing to let somebody else do it for you is dishonest and prevents you from learning key behaviors. In this case, it's preventing him from thinking about what is probably a bite sized piece of what will be a larger program, if he was doing this professionally. His solution being "let me write it in a way I'm more comfortable with" should have been a red flag from the prof honestly. If this guy is apparently not doing well at the language he's *expected* to be learning, how was he going to make it work with something that's totally different? I hope for the sake of his partner that the partner got through to the prof and/or reported both to the dean.

It feels like there might be some family pressure for them to get children, in which case an announcement like that could feel like a really disrespectful wau to one-up them. Then she caught her husband badmouthing her to his coworker, saying she was ‘divorcing him and trying to take the kids out of nowhere,’ letting those people have this weird untrue perception of her. So that coworker and his wife avoided her at some sort of party.
I honestly hope she’s doing better now, and is far, far, FAR away from that man.

There are the occasional things, especially with younger dogs, that you just don't think to get them ready for, loke mascots and funky sculptures, until you're in the moment. But honestly, I completely understand how, if you didn't know what a sculpture was, a very exaggerated, unproportional, big humanoid thing, menacingly standing in the corner, could be extremely terrifying.

The most valuable part of a group project in CS is learning how to work together and integrate ideas and code from your team members. I know at the end of the day, you mostly get solely graded on the end product, but companies will be looking for people who are not only qualified but who have good communication and team working skills. I know this sounds silly but genuinely there are many people in my degree (CS) that do not get this. Nobody can work with team members that are not openly communicating their problems and asking questions. What are you gonna do when you get to a new software team and have to understand the 15+ year old code base? Rewrite it all so you understand it? No!! You have to humble yourself and ask questions and be stupid for a couple weeks or months. There is nothing wrong with that. Leave your pride and arrogance at home. The project is not about who did what right, code is owned by everyone. One person’s bad code is everyone’s bad code because it is your job to check over and approve people’s designs and work.

The only thing that changes is that the problems here go way further back than when the dog got into the KFC." Regarding the wedding story Chance and Shayne immediately went to the "the guests were affected negatively and were collateral damage in their attempt to get back to the groom's brother and his wife and their parents" but the more I think about it... were the guests really that affected? Like as OP says, the newlyweds did take photos. Some of the guests knew. They got pictures of friends and the bride's side of the family. It was intentional that they didn't take photos with the groom's side of the family (who are implied to either sided or would've sided with the brother that wanted to "steal the spotlight"). We don't know the situation or the relationship the newlyweds had with the rest of the guests. Angela and Chance made a joke about the joy of spreading gossip and what if that was exactly what happened tho? They got pictures with the people that they were close with. Some of the guests were likely just there out of obligation or just wanted to dress up, that's a thing. Because here's the thing, OP's doesn't mention the other guests were upset ... at least not immediately. The first thing he says is "Obviously we were embarrassed." His first instinct is to point out the how embarassed his family is (which seems to be the scenario the newlyweds wanted). When he does mention guests being upset, he goes "lots of people are upset especially my brother and his girlfriend" AGAIN focusing on HIS family, not the guests. I can't help but imagine the rest of the guests being just as Angela and Chance joked going "did you here" or "have you heard", 'cause like idk it's gossip. I can't really relate, but afaik family LOVES to gossip. This could've been a gift to the rest of the guests honestly.

Coding story was predictably infuriating. Code is INFAMOUSLY difficult to collaborate on. If you read someone else’s code and don’t understand it, that is completely normal and does not speak at all to the quality of the code? Also, since it’s a graded code, my guess is it needed to be commented significantly, meaning the code is literally laid out intricately so new people looking at the code understand it, so it’s very hard to believe it would be convoluted.
Also, RUST??????? For those who don’t know, C++ is like the first coding language most people learn. RUST is a crazy language to translate to. My guess is this poor girl figured the syntax (how to code in the program) would be close enough to C++ and then realized how difficult rust would be. I really do feel for this girl. I can’t imagine doing all that work just for it to be plagiarized and to have the person who KNOWINGLY plagiarized it be like “that doesn’t sound like my problem”. I hope he’s found out and I hope she gets the grade she deserves. It’s difficult not to make her work being insulted, plagiarized, and then her not being believed into a gender thing as well. I dont know if this is true but I believe it *and* this is one of my issues with the modern structure of society. People are expected to be able to do everything (or, at least, expectations are unreasonably high for other people. You cant be most everything someone needs. Its simply too much.) There is a lack of true community and support. Family may be there for you but they are usually further away and not always there for you, arent good family, or in and of them selves not that many, only a few relatives near by, may be inconvenient
Instead of being surrounded by your aunts, second uncles, third brothers wife and all the relatives that come with marriages. You only have yourself and maybe a few others. And now days both parents need to work, unless one of them is trained and very good at home stuff; sewing, cooking, preserving and growing food etc. But even then you may be risking your childs future because of the lack of money.
This problem is further exasterbated by the mobility of the modern person. We move when we go to college, for work, for a different life, job, etc. Leaving suppprt systems that were once ingrained in society. Now the state is expected (and usually argued) to pick up where the community no longer does. Which is not the same thing.

Added context on Story 3: coding languages are very distinct. Knowing how to code in C++ does not mean you know how to code in other coding languages. So what OP was proposing would be like writing an essay in French instead of English.
Now, Rust is syntactically similar to C++, just as French and English have the same root languages, but that does not mean a person skilled in one can completely switch to the other without issue.
Not only that, but OP mentions the tutor doing parts of the project, which makes me wonder just how much OP actually did. Maybe he’s unwilling to defend his project partner because he thinks the professor will realize OP didn’t do as much of the work as he claims.

that's what I'm thinking too... like if he were to go in with her to say "yeah she wrote it in C++ but then I converted it to Rust" the Professor would probably have some questions about WHY he needed/wanted to convert the code from C++ to Rust and HOW he went about doing it... and if OP doesn't actually know Rust well enough to explain the process because HE didn't actually do any of the conversion, but rather the "tutor" did all of the work converting the code... it could easily out him as a cheater/plagiarizer and then HE could end up as the one with a Zero and maybe even put on academic probation.

Because I’m a little linguistics mad, I just need to point out that though English and French certainly both come from the root language (indo-european) they don’t come from the same language family and aren’t closely related in origin. The similarities between the two languages are largely due to the Norman conquest of England in 1066 which predates modern English by 400 years or there about. French is a Romance language and English a Germanic one. English used to sound a lot more like German, and still sort of does if you squint at it. It does have a lot of French influence, but not in its origin- its origin being all Germanic. Before language standardization of course, there was a lot more variation. But I would be interested in how that relates to coding languages. The languages we speak all by necessity evolved organically and messily, influenced by conquest and cultural mixing on the one hand and isolation on the other. It’s much more of a tangled web than a tree, the further back you try to go especially. Since coding language is by its necessity invented, does it have that same quality or is it more direct in its origin? Do you know what families so to speak a coding language belongs to, etc.
