    From Wikipedia:
    Roanoke (/ˈroʊənoʊk/) is an independent city in the U.S. commonwealth of Virginia. At the 2010 census, the population was 97,032. It is located in the Roanoke Valley of the Roanoke Region of Virginia.
    Roanoke is the largest municipality in Southwest Virginia, and is the principal municipality of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which had a 2010 population of 308,707. It is composed of the independent cities of Roanoke and Salem, and Botetourt, Craig, Franklin, and Roanoke counties. Bisected by the Roanoke River, Roanoke is the commercial and cultural hub of much of Southwest Virginia and portions of Southern West Virginia
    The town first called Big Lick was established in 1852 and chartered in 1874. It was named for a large outcropping of salt which drew the wildlife to the site near the Roanoke River. In 1882 it became the town of Roanoke, and in 1884 it was chartered as the independent city of Roanoke. The name Roanoke is said to have originated from an Algonquian word for "shell money". The name for the river was that used by the Algonquian speakers who lived 300 miles away where the river emptied into the sea near Roanoke Island. The native people who lived near where the city was founded did not speak Algonquian. They spoke Siouan languages, Tutelo and Catawban. There were also Cherokee speakers in that general area who fought with the Catawba people. The city grew frequently through annexation through the middle of the 20th century. The last annexation was in 1976. The state legislature has since prohibited cities from annexing land from adjacent counties. Roanoke's location in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the middle of the Roanoke Valley between Maryland and Tennessee, made it the transportation hub of western Virginia and contributed to its rapid growth.
    Interstate 581 is the primary north-south roadway through the city. It is also the only interstate highway as Interstate 81 passes north of the city limits. Interstate 581 is a concurrency with U.S. Route 220, which continues as the Roy L. Webber Expressway from downtown Roanoke, where the I-581 designation ends, south to State Route 419. Route 220 connects Roanoke to Martinsville, Virginia and Greensboro, North Carolina. The proposed Interstate 73 would generally parallel Route 220 between Roanoke and Greensboro and would likely be a concurrency with I-581 through the city. The primary east-west roadway is U.S. Route 460, named Melrose Avenue and Orange Avenue. Route 460 connects Roanoke to Lynchburg. U.S. Route 11 passes through the city, primarily as Brandon Avenue and Williamson Road, which was a center of automotive-based commercial development after World War II. Other major roads include U.S. Route 221, State Route 117 (known as Peters Creek Road) and State Route 101 (known as Hershberger Road). The Blue Ridge Parkway also briefly runs adjacent to the city border.
    Roanoke is divided into four quadrants: Northwest (NW), Northeast (NE), Southwest (SW) and Southeast (SE). The mailing address for locations in Roanoke includes the two letter quadrant abbreviation after the street name. For example, the Center in the Square complex in downtown Roanoke has the address "1 Market Square SE".

    Downtown is the most beautiful part of Roanoke, VA. I love cruising down there and blasting my favorite song, downtown by Macklemore through my headphones.
    Downtown Is just beautiful. I love it with my whole heart. Just a ride downtown can brighten the shittiest days. I love the atmosphere and all the good shops and places to eat there. I love all the memories that I’ve made there and I have a bracelet that I got from a shop downtown to remember them by.
    I hope that someday I get my Mustang and can blare downtown from the speakers as I cruise down the streets of downtown, Roanoke.
    Thank you so much for making this video, I really appreciate it.

    I like Roanoke, reminds me of Raleigh just the way it looks. When I drove around Raleigh my head was always on a swivel, someone turns ahead of me I look up the street they took as I go by and see what it looks like. I found a lot different ways to get around and a lot of them took me through beautiful and sometimes historical neighborhoods Just a small criticism, your camera always faces forward, probably mounted on your dash but a more point of view like a head mounted camera may be something to explore.

    I love mountain cities like Roanoke and Charlottesville remind me of a small Denver. Richmond Virginia beach and Northern Virginia are nice especially the ocean water in the Hampton roads area or the beautiful water front and cleanest urban areas of nova but Roanoke need more love it's the fourth spot and the most city spot of sw va and I'm from Richmond but Roanoke deserves allot more recognition from the main spots of Virginia it's a nice size city just need to add Blacksburg and other surrounding areas together to combine to a large metro area and then people would really appreciate it more it gets overlooked because people see the metro population and think it's not as urban as it actually is plus it has a nice night life also

      @@JERios-wv8lxRoanoke is in a valley, surrounded by mountains ⛰️ It’s pretty nice here, moved here in 2022 for a new job. I like it overall. Not too hot in the summer, not too cold in the winter, low humidity most of the year, lots of sunny days, minimal traffic and manic drivers like in Floriduh where I lived before Roanoke.
      Only real downsides are it’s a bit small, and there’s no water nearby (Smith Mountain Lake is at least 45 minutes away). Housing isn’t exactly cheap either, though certainly much cheaper than the big eastern cities.

    • @danielargabright5591
      @danielargabright5591 Před 2 lety +3

      Kaiser is kind of right. Some years we get several snow storms with a couple of inches to maybe five at the most. And then some years we get two or more feet all at once. Although that is more on the rare side. Back in 2009 2010 winter We had one storm dump 18 inches in December and then a few weeks later we had another storm dump almost another foot on top of December snow that hadn’t melted because it had been so cold and then in February we got another 8 inches. But since then we have not had a winter quite so bad. I think last year or year before last we had a little over a foot but that was it. It’ll snow like 2 to 4 times in the winter and then the rest of the time it’ll be just kind of cold and dry sometimes it’ll warm up to 60s or so and then it’ll get cold again. We do sometimes get affected with the rain from hurricanes and nor’easter’s.

    • @danielargabright5591
      @danielargabright5591 Před 2 lety +4

      I live here and I can tell you it is not abandoned. Of course every city has its abandoned buildings. When he turned from eighth Street left onto Campbell, The buildings you saw straightahead are abandoned now, although they used to build steam engines there back in the day and most recently coal hoppers back in 2015 or so. The railroad has all of it pulled out of Roanoke. So city leaders have been transitioning away from the railroad and focusing on having lots of different industries and employers so that if one industry goes downhill or pulls out then Roanoke won’t be left with high unemployment. When they stoppedbuilding steam engines in the late 50s early 60s, the viscose rayon plant also shut down at nearly the same time leaving 6000 or more workers out of work all at once.

      It's a small city in rural America. What did you expect? Stop thinking every single city is going to be LA or NYC. There are several surrounding towns that carry a lot of the population in the county, not just the city. Plenty of things to do from college sports, outdoor activities, festivals, bars, restaurants, etc but in case you haven't noticed, there is a pandemic going on so a lot of the social gathering spots are closed.

      Yes downtown Roanoke was originally built on what is actually or was a rare Inland saltmarsh. The marsh was drained and people started moving in. Before this people wouldn’t live here because of the marsh. Not even Indians, they considered the entire valley to be a sacred hunting ground from what I understand due to the game that the salt marsh attracted. With all that in mind downtown is pretty much the lowest point in the valley. So when it pours really hard it can flood. I never remember that flooding as a kid but they made some sort of change in the drainage system under downtown somehow they made the passages smaller I can’t remember exactly. There are several underground creeks that were covered up when the marsh was drained and when they overflow downtown pretty much just floods. And they overflow much easier now that be drainage canal has been made narrower underground
