    We're up to an early start as we head out to the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica! If you have never been here, you'll definitely want to tune in as we explore one of the world's most biodiverse forests!
    Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is located next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. The cloud forest reserve opened its doors in 1992 as an ecological reserve. It is maintained and run by the community of Santa Elena. The reserve protects 765 acres of prime cloud forest which is home to over 3200 plant species, over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 1200 species of reptiles and amphibians and tens of thousands of insects!
    The reserve sits on the Caribbean slope of the continental divide at about 1600m in elevation where it receives warm winds from the Atlantic that sweep upward and condense to form clouds that sit above the forest canopy. This constant moisture provided by the clouds creates an ideal environment for plant life. In this region of cloud forest, there are over 32 species of Anthuriums, 18 species of philodendrons and between 450-500 species of orchids.
    The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve allows paid guests to walk along their well-maintained trails and to come and experience some of the very best nature this country has to offer. They offer guided or self-guided tours. The reserve also has a cafeteria and an orchid garden for their guests.
    We recommend arriving early to take full advantage of all the trails. (You should plan to spend at least 3 hours here). The park is open from 7am to 3 pm. We did not need a reservation to enter, although it is recommended if you are planning to go with a large group.
    Down below is a link to the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve website, where you can find more information on the reserve, maps on getting here, entrance fees and policies of the reserve. Their website also offers viewers a virtual tour of the forest and has incredible footage taken by the wild life cameras set up around the premises.

    As we mentioned earlier, The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is a community run project. Proceeds from the entrance fees goes towards maintaining and preserving this forest, as well as helping the local community with educational programs. If you would like to donate to this incredible project, you can do so directly from the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve's website. They also currently accept donations from crypto currencies!

    Could you go off the trail and explore? I would have been so tempted to venture off and find all kinds of plants!

      Not really 😂. They have rules at the reserve and also park rangers. They told us to stay on trail. Also not a good idea cause of snakes. . There wasn't much need to go off trail anyways as the trail was quite good and full of all sorts of plants along the way. ❤️ Thanks for watching

    I will be traveling from California, USA to the Monteverde area in less than one month (my 2nd trip to CR, as I plan to move there soon) and now that I have seen your video, I certainly want to visit this place while I am there. Thank you so much! I have 2 questions:
    1. Is there much wild life in that area? (I believe I only spotted one bird in your video.) I LOVE wild life!
    2. Do you have a Facebook group or other means that likeminded people can communicate with you? (I am looking to meet people who share the same Love for nature as I do.)

      Hi Derek. Thanks for your message. 1.There is in fact a lot of wildlife in Monteverde, however my trip to Santa Elena was focused mostly on plants. Also, it's like anywhere else, you don't always see the wildlife... Depends on times of day, season, etc... But there is wildlife all over CR!!! 2. I don't have a Facebook but I do have Instagram @bikehikebotany and also am building the website bikehikebotany.com. I am most active on IG and you can also write to me at bikehikebotany@gmail.com. I'd be happy to share whatever info and experience that I have of CR with you, or maybe let's plan hike 🤣🙌🏼.
      Hope your move goes well. I'm sure you will love this place. (It's the most beautiful place on earth)!!!!! Pura Vida 🙌🏼

      @@BikeHikeBotany Hey Bike Hike OR do you prefer Mr./Ms. Botany? You do not have to tell me "It's the most beautiful place on earth." I already KNOW it is! I spent 2 weeks in Manuel Antonio last October and got to hang out with White-faced Capuchins and other cool stuff! I will connect with you on Instagram and reference this communication so that you will know it's me.

    How are the insects there btw? That would be interesting to know, if there are many insects to be worried about, like mosquitos, ticks, etc.

    • @BikeHikeBotany
      @BikeHikeBotany  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! Thanks for the question. There are LOTS of insects here in CR. Mosquitos are prevalent and you should use protection as there does exist dengue fever here as well as malaria . Ticks also exist here, although I haven't had an issue with them while hiking. Thanks again for watching and subscribing!! Pura Vida
