    When I was a little girl I used to live in Mexico. My grandma used to have a lady that helped her with the household chores and she would take me with her to do laundry ... at a nearby RIVER! i would watch her do laundry and scrub the clothes on a huge rock and rinse them in the river... I'm happy we have washers and driers now 😂 👕👖🧩🏞🌊

      @@anushreesharma6167 Yes, every time I go back to visit some of my family still washes clothes by hand and dry their clothes on top of their roof. It really reminds me of my childhood. The times have changed, the technology now has made it very convenient to do the daily chores. So when I hear my little sister complain about doing her laundry, I just tell her to be thankful she doesn't have to go the river and wash it there lol

      _lcmj damn. Crazy. My grandma, also Mexican (& Puerto Rican) washed her clothes by hand until they got a washer. But it makes me curious if HER MOM did the same as your grandma? Because that was in Mexico. My grandma passed a few months ago so hopefully I can find out thru one of my aunts.

    You can streamline your hand washing just a little bit more by using a wool wash that doesn't need to be rinsed. I'm a hand knitter and many/most of us use something like Eucalan or Soak for our fine hand knits. Plus they come in lovely fragrances or fragrance-free. In a pinch, it is also okay to use a mild dish detergent (I will most often use this with my handknit socks) like Ivory for wool, cashmere, and silk ... though this DOES need to be rinsed thoroughly. We hand knitters are masters of hand washing :)

    I work in the fashion industry as a product developer. 60% of the time, the reason something is dry-clean only is trims. Either the trim finish gets damaged quickly in water wash, or the trim damages the fabric or other trims in wash - even by hand. Other than that, it is usually fabric delicacy and dye running. There are LOTS of things that are dry clean only that can be handwashed - and I handwash most of mine at home. Sometimes, though, it is internal construction and in those cases you will likely damage the make and drape of your garment if you hand wash it. If you have a structured dress or jacket, just take it to the dry cleaners.

    My dry cleaning story is: I had a dress that had pleats all around the bottom. I took it to the Dry Cleaners like the label said to do. The next time I wore it someone commented, "you burned your dress!" No not me, I didn't realize it when I put it on, but the Dry Cleaners had scorched my dress when they pressed the pleats. Totally ruined an expensive dress.

When I picked it up, it was a hideous greenish/gray. I had a lovely lavender wool sweater that got accidentally thrown in the dryer. It of course shrank. And to the point that I couldn't wear it any longer. My 10 year old cousin was delighted to get that sweater that year. Drat it.

    @#CleanMySpace what about towels/garments that have a dampish/musty smell?? i bought a new set of towels from Kohls may be last Dec over Christmas break since my other set wasn't absorbing as well. for a while, we would hang them up instead of throwing in the dryer. for a while it was working, but after a while, starting in Sept this year, the towels starting getting this dampish/musty smell on them. so now we only hang to dry may be every other week and then put in dryer every other week.

    • @EWJC3
      @EWJC3 Pƙed 4 lety +2

      I have found that adding about a cup of white vinegar to every load of towels, then drying them in the sun when possible, helps to keep towels smelling fresh.😁

    • @jellyfishbubbles2098
      @jellyfishbubbles2098 Pƙed 4 lety +1

      Unless you are washing them right away hang them to dry after use. Then when you do wash them put vinegar in as a fabric softener and got water, this should kill the bacteria causing the smell. Then you can just put them in the dryerput them in the dryer to dry. This is what I have done and I have never had any musty smell once cleaned

    • @juliestam
      @juliestam Pƙed 4 lety +2

      Musty smell could also be from your washing machine. Air it by leaving the door/lid open all year round. Vinegar instead of fabric softener will get rid of the smell. A few drops of lavender oil in the vinegar will also kill bacteria that cause the smell

      @adriataylor7534 Pƙed 4 lety

      i have told that to my mom, but she doesn't seem to have interest in doing this. it's one of those "if it's not her idea, it's not good enough" thing. i did buy these towels from Kohls, so may be they are a higher quality of brand/material.

    • @adriataylor7534

    • @lailasiddiqui263
      @lailasiddiqui263 Pƙed 4 lety +1

      Darya Kuleshova dirt does not slide away from the cloth when we soak it in water . The dirt only becomes loose from the garment.
      So in order to rinse the dirt away , one must hold the garment straight up and rinse in a bucket full of water a couple of times only then can the dirt slide away .
      Hope this helps

    I'm so bad. I throw everything in the washing machine. The delicate cycle is my best friend. I know, I'm sad and bad. I have a top loader without an agitator. I use a 2 in 1 baby shampoo on wool and silk and leather!! The PC brand is my current favourite. I even washed my ROOTS bag this way and just needed to oil it really well after it dried. My sad story is that I am way too adventurous and used to throw a silk blouse that I had in the dryer. This makes the silk way more delicate...I do not recommend drying silk in the dryer...Now I'm following the laying flat method that you recommend! I have been eyeing The Laundress products for a while and did not know that they were easily available in Canada. I will definitely give them a try!

    Any tips to freshen oversized heavy comforters when you just can't afford to send them to the cleaners? I have a king/queen size heavy comforter w/the heavy cording around the edges. In fact, (dh nor I) can sleep under it & have to fold it down to the end of the bed bc we have such terrible neuropathy that it's downright painful to lay under. It would cost upwards of $75 to have it professionally cleaned. I've sprayed it w/Febreze, & I have left it in the sun for a few hours or so but it has been such a wet year this past year & running back & forth w/my mil, who has been in such bad health this past year, I'm just exhausted, hurting (stress fractures returned along w/new issue w/achilisitis & possible bursa tear. Am waiting on appt w/specialist to learn just how bad it is. spent last year in & out of casts & don't relish the thoughts of that again. It's alls courtesy of multiple autoimmune diseases). Thank you for the tips. I've sort of been binge watching/listening & making notes as well as putting a lot of what I've learned, albeit many I already knew but I have learned a great deal, to work.
