  • Look behind the scenes of how my excessive shopping order gets put together at ITS. Both vans are being fully kitted with smaller tools and sundries. I was putting this day off - the money it would cost me made me cry deeply. But there are a few really good bits I got.

It's hard enough doing the frigging electrical work and running a business. If you can get your van organized and know where your inventory is it just makes the work day so much easier.

I used to work for a sparky, he used to take all of his tools inside every night after he had finished. Oh and every time you go on about van security. I remember a video you did years ago now, the locking system you recommended then impressed me so much. It centrally locked each door top and bottom not just one pissy external thing at the top.

@@thomasnagy You're welcome! You'd have a field day in my house (rented) i went to change a 2 gang dimmer in the living room, and on unscrewing the faceplace (metal) i was greeted with (i'm colourblind to i grabbed my better half to double check) all red wires! Apart from the earth, which was sheathed correctly. I have 2 bathroom lights, on different circuits, well, i did have. Haven't told the landlord yet. Oh, and my boiler was replaced 18 months ago....... it has 13A chord on it, and a plug. Say no more.
I've just decided to put the summer house on hold and go and invest in a shit ton of fire extinguishers.

Tom, you’re bang on with spending the money.
The only people that will put you down for it are those that don’t see the value in having good gear and how much money those tools will earn them.
It’s the same for the Apple Mac Pro, if you can’t afford it you don’t need it- a true pro will see its value and pay the price.
It’s the same reason I have £8k in camera gear; it makes me money and I can rely on it to just work.
You’re an inspiration to anyone that has a talent or skill.

As a recently semi-retired electrician I note a couple of interesting points here. 1. You're not rolling in cash, this is probably because you're not a fly by night spark but doing the job properly, I knew a lot of wealthy sparks most of their work was questionable to say the least, plus not usually very neat. I prided myself on the customer not being able to tell that we had been there. 2. buying the best tools you can, costs more money but saves you time in the long run and having the right tools is so much easier. Been there done it. Still love the videos!

Your van kitting people need to build some sort of slide out rack unit which can be offloaded each night into a forked receiver at your lockup each day. Backup the van, manually align it, offload all the expensive stuff from the rear. Drop a few rolls of cable from the side door and you're off. If it saved 10 minutes each end it would pay for itself in a year or three.

Ralph Pickering They did, and worked right up to the dizzy heights of ending up in Court for exploiting self employed workers, AND LOST!

Reading all the comments it really shows how mentality has changed, and everyone spends spends spends. Back in the day, our firm had one Hilti sds drill, two Meggers (one hand wound!) 2 ladders, all shared between 8 electricians and 2 apprentices. We all used our own cars, and were the best tradesmen I ever worked with.

@7:44 I admire your ambition and your ballsiness, but I dont agree. Fail aiming at the top and it is a long way down and the landing may hurt hard - before the bank manager comes along and kicks you in the groan.
Achievable goals and climb the ladder, but we are all different.
Good luck to you Tom 👍

Stephen Isgar I agree, strive for things that stretch you, but not to the point where you fall so far it paralyses you if the elastic snaps. Failing should only put you back where you started, not in a worse position.
