  • The RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) refers to a lightweight, quick-reaction, fire-and-forget missile. It was designed to destroy anti-ship cruise missiles and asymmetric air and surface threats. The RIM-116 RAM was developed as a collaboration project between the U.S. and German governments and continues to be cooperatively produced and supported. Currently there are two RIM-116 configurations namely: Block 1A (RIM-116B) and Block 2 (RIM-116C). Block 1A is nearly finished with full rate production. Meanwhile the RAM Block 2 configuration is currently in low-rate initial production and undergoing Developmental and Operational Testing.

    It would be interesting to see the system upgraded to something like the Peregrine missile when it is ready. The AIM-260 is a huge upgrade from the AIM-120D but half the length. Both are likely far too long for the rolling airframe.

    • @AugmentedGravity
      @AugmentedGravity Před rokem +1

      Why are you mentioning these unrelated systems?

    • @toddabbott781
      @toddabbott781 Před rokem

      @@AugmentedGravity First is because the original rolling air frame used the AIM-9 Sidewinder. Then the modified it using the IR sensor from the Stinger missiles and it developed into its own missile called the RAM. It is still basically an IR homing missile about the size of an AIM-9 Sidewinder.
      The US AIM-120 and AIM-9 are currently used in the ground based NASAMS to great effect and the AIM-260 is its replacement for the AIM-120 and the Peregrine looks to be the replacement for the AIM-9, but it has all the capabilities of the AIM-260, but with a much shorter range. This is still a HUGE step forward from the AIM-9. The AIM-260 is a beast... a massive upgrade. Also when you consolidate systems like that to use a common missile you save a lot of money.
      The Peregrine missile would be a faster, longer ranged, and much more capable missile than the current missiles. I would replace the Phalanx with a 300kw Helios laser system (which they likely will). These are both technologies that will be available over the next 3-5 years. The AIM-260 already went into full production back in October and is planned to phase out the AIM-120 by 2025. The Peregrine is rumored to go into full production in 2025 or 2026. They figured it would be easier to base it heavily on the AIM-260 that come up with an entirely new missile for the replacement of the AIM-9. This will double the speed, quadruple the range, and add active and passive radar tracking to the existing IR tracking. All for a missile the same weight. It will be slightly larger around but shorter though so that is can replace a single AIM-120 or AIM-260 in an F-35 or F-22 internally with 2 shorter Peregrine missiles.

Secondly, it only entered service a few years ago. You clearly don’t know anything about the US navy for you to comment about replacing the missile. The US and tons of other countries still use SM-2 missiles which came out in this 60s. Unlike Russia, America uses platforms that they know already work and simply upgrade them. It’s far better than creating an entire new missile

      95% hit rate, and that's just the RAM. Other missile defense systems such as the Phalanx CIWS, Evolved SeaSparrow Missiles, and Standard SM-2s/3s/6s provide a layered defense which only activates the RAM when absolutely needed. So I'd say it's a pretty good system.

      Actually they do not. (And I would add that the missiles in this video are NOT 'killing' weapons, they are defensive meant to stop other peoples actual killing weapons.) Russia and China (potential enemies) have missiles meant to shoot down anti-ship missiles, but they tend to be larger, harder to produce (more expensive), less agile, much slower to launch, and most of them are not fire and forget. Also they are of dubious quality. Just look at how poorly the best of Russian equipment is proving to be in Ukraine. The Chinese gear is mostly modelled off of Russian gear and is not likely to be significantly superior.

    I suspect a normal gun-based CIWS system will be less likely to be overwhelmed, and 100-200 20mm rounds are probably a LOT cheaper than one RIM-116.

    • @X.Y.Z.07
      @X.Y.Z.07 Před rokem +3

      Yes, but 20mm may not always be enough to stop a large Russian AShM in time wit it's relatively limited range.
      The RIM complement the defenses, as it allows them to engage the threats at longer range with more firepower..
      Anything that get through would then be engaged by the Phalanx .

    • @panpiper
      @panpiper Před rokem +1

      A gun based system is cheaper, yes, but it is NOT less likely to be overwhelmed. Quite the contrary rather. A RAM can launch all of its missiles at separate targets VERY quickly with a good chance of hitting every one of them. A CIWS gun system can engage only one target at a time and has to stay on that target until it is dead. Also because the CIWS gun is relatively short ranged, it is not likely to be able to engage a second target before it hits if both missile are engaging simultaneously.
      This is not all bad however, as at least in principle a CIWS gun 'and' a RAM missile system could 'both' be deployed on the same vessel due to their operating at different ranges. The RAM would engage threats first at longer range with the CIWS gun acting as goalkeeper to engage any threats that make it past the RAM. IMO this is the ideal deployment strategy.
      Sadly most (all that I am aware of) navies are going for either one or the other rather than both. The pencil pushers clearly haven't done their math, as adding a CWIS gun in conjunction with a RAM system would not cost very much relatively speaking and would likely double the ship's survivability.

    OK------. In today's World with China able to Launch Hundreds of missiles in Mass Attacks, the Mk-49 RAM Missile launcher carrying only 21 missiles, the Mk15-32 only 11missiles and reload times of hours MAKES America's last ditch Missile defense simply put, just Pitiful. But A simple upgrade to each launcher could fix that problem by adding an additional box to each side of the mounts center Box launcher without needing Additional deck space. This would give the MK-15 Mod 32, Three - 11 round boxes for a total of 33 missiles while the Mk-49 with TWO additional boxes would have 63 missiles on each launcher to Ensure that America's fleet does not run out of LAST-DITCH missiles to stay afloat and operational...

      I know that many western people has been brain washed by western media.
      In history, Taiwan is always a part of China.
      To be simple, I can tell that most of the Taiwan people were from mainland China in the year of around 1947.
      And at that time, the Taiwan people steal all the gold from mainland China, saved by 500 million people of China.
      We have never move our warships close to US or any western countries.
      But US and the West has been doing this for years, every year, not only to Taiwan, even to the coast of mainland China.
      We just want to take back our land, especially don't want Taiwan to be controlled by the west.
      I am from Hong Kong, I was born and lived here since Hong Kong was still governed by the UK.
      I understand how and what is being say by the western media about Taiwan and Hong Kong very clearly,
