    Why are they running a hybrid diesel train when there is overhead power on the entire route?

      No overhead line at the section connecting the Tohoku Main Line and the Senseki Line at 25:06. Tohoku Main Line is 20 kV AC, Senseki Line is 1500 V DC and there isn't enough space to put in a dead section. Also due to the reconstruction effort, it was too costly to put the connecting line elsewhere that could fit a dead section that didn't take ages to build, it was cheaper than AC/DC EMUs and it didn't require expensive or time consuming construction as the level was the same. Since this was a new rapid service, and the governments wanting to have a direct operation service, Hybrid DMUs were selected because the rapid service continues to the rest of the unelectrified portion of the Senseki Line.

      @@DaFrankoX Yes this unelectrified connection is the main reason for adopting hybrid trains, but these units also run through past Ishinomaki to Onagawa which is on the unelectrified Ishinomaki Line.
