PS2 Slim Modbo 4.0 Modchip - Install Overview & Demonstration

  • The Modbo 4.0 is a modchip for the PlayStation 2 which works both Fat and Slim consoles! Every version has a different wiring method but this is a one size fits all chip, so to speak. It is a clone of the Matrix line of modchips, even sporting the Matrix Infinity 1.93 firmware on it! This is a 21 wire install and the PS2 has some super tiny points, so be prepared to have a steady hand and some patience if you take on the task of installing this little monstrosity!
    Notable features of the chip include: Playing imported/backed up PS1 and PS2 games, screen fixes for out of region games, and region free DVD playback!

    I think that the best modchip for PS2 is Ripper 3.2. With this chip PS2 behaves literally like usual factory non-moded Ps2 except that you can play all PS1/PS2 burned games with all correct logos and stuff.

    Curious question, does setting "boot logo" to "off" get rid of the Matrix and Infinity logos on the PlayStation 2 logo screen when booting a PS2 game as well as the Matrix logo screen when booting up the console? It sounds like it at least gets rid of the latter, but the former seems more bothersome.

    Curious to know what software and disc you use to burn your backups? I bought my modded PS2 way back in the day (best ebay auction ever) and I do remember successfully creating backups but I was using Nero and an old PC with a pre installed DVD driver.. I now have a new one with an external DVD drive and am using DVD Decrypter and having a little trouble.

    • @donsizemore8746

      Don Sizemore Tried that disc with imgburn, alcohol 120 and dvd decrypter. I found out I used maxell dvd + r in the past. Still not working for me which leads me to think I need to get a writer that burns at a slower speed. My current driver only does 8x or 4x.

    • @donsizemore8746
      @donsizemore8746 Před 6 lety

      Hmm. 4x should be fine. Can you still boot into the matrix menu? Maybe get a friend to burn a disc for you and that could help you narrow down if it's the drive or the chip.

      @PowerKegGreg Před 6 lety

      Don Sizemore I actually just learned about the menu just result lol but yes I can get into the menu. My PS2 has been sitting for a good while. As for the chip I’m not even sure if it’s an authentic chip or a clone so I don’t dare try to update it. I’ll be heading home here for Christmas and I’ll bring back my discs that I know worked before. I do remember burning it at 2x. At this point I’m just trying to replicate what worked for me in the past.

    When you inserted the PS1 game, I started counting when the icon on the home screen started moving, indicating it detected a disc. It took about 25 seconds for the black screen to end and the game to start. I checked my unmodified PS2 which does show the PS1 boot screen, but after the screen disappeared and the game started, it also took 25 seconds. It appears it's just really the boot screen missing and the modchip does not slow down booting discs from the menu.

    Is there a way to turn PS2 mod chips on/off by holding certain buttons? I've been googling but can't get my mod chip to re-activate after storing it in a draw for several years. It was bought pre-modded and I seem to have burned some DMS4 firmware software which I stored with it. No idea what chip is in it from circa 2002/03?

    Can you tell the type of modchip installed based on their characteristics? Please let me know based on the following details.
    My uncle bought a Fat model SCPH-30006 PS2 back in 2002 with a mod chip already installed that could play original and pirated PS2 nad PS1 discs from any region. PS2 games boot up normally when inserting the disc into the console it won't do so for PS1 games and DVD movies.
    To play PS1 games or watch DVD movies, you had to insert the disc into the console, place the PS2 into stand by mode via the reset button, then I have boot-up the PS2 while holding down the reset button until the disc is read.
    What mod-chip does my uncle's 30006 Fat model have?

      @PROJECT ZIPPER We make threats not promises Nice, i think you need H, even for PAL. With H you may fix your problem, I've seen this online. I installed the new chip, done now. I got the boot menu, but had to connect the controller ribbon cable so I turned it off and connected it. Now all I get is a black screen.. sigh

      @PROJECT ZIPPER We make threats not promisesRibbon doesn't need to be connected to get video output, I first tested without anything connected and I saw the matrix screen but it froze at 'loading config' or something. I'm going to try circle triangle combination today, or Start button. Maybe that'll give video output

    Is there any reason to hard mod over softmod?

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  Před 6 lety +1

      One shot booting of backed up games and imports from disc, no need to patch them with ESR, some chips such as this also have functionality to load a certain file on boot from your memory card or USB drive. For the regular enduser though? Not really, my preferred method is FreeMCBoot and playing all the games from an internal hard drive.

    • @Musicmaddnes
      @Musicmaddnes Před 6 lety

      MrMario2011 I didn't assume it was worth modding. I plan to backup all my games and uncles games so I can play all the games from when I was a teenager. I tried putting a modbo rev 4.0 into a fat ps2 when I was in highschool and that didn't turn out great.

    • @ToothpickMan11
      @ToothpickMan11 Před 5 lety

      Free McBoot is great for wanting to play PS2 games, but if you're wanting to play PS1 backups it's a pain to set up and Free McBoot can't tap into the PS1 backwards compatibility so the only way to play backed up PS1 games is with pops which is basically an emulator. That's one reason why you'd consider hard modding your PS2 and using it in conjunction with Free McBoot.

    • @edwardgrant7708
      @edwardgrant7708 Před 4 lety

      @@ToothpickMan11 you can boot ps1 backups with freemcboot. All you need to do is cover all the disk lens to force the disk to always spin put in a legit ps1 game then boot into unlaunch elf by holding pressing circle when booting console and swap the ps1 game with a modded ps1 game and in boot settings select boot ps2 disk and it should work fine.

    • @ToothpickMan11
      @ToothpickMan11 Před 4 lety

      @@edwardgrant7708 You can't do that with a fat PS2 easily, also that's a lot of work when you can just install a mod chip. You also won't damage your laser near as badly or the spindle motor.

    • @Spoo76
      @Spoo76 Před 7 lety

      remle ikawura this board should. the model number is low enough. fwiw i wouldn't say it's "better" than free mcboot only because free mcboot is a softmod that doesn't require disassembly

    • @ForeverPimpinVideo
      @ForeverPimpinVideo Před 7 lety +6

      The issues with FMCB don't come from FMCB, they come from OPL and ESR. OPL does not guarantee every game to be played by Flash Drive, Hard Drive or even Network so yea its free but the Modbo chip is literally like 6 bucks and disassembly of a PS2 is a piece of cake. Alot of people run both a modchip and a softmod with swap disc as back up. I have all 3 on my 77001 Slim. But i'm looking to get a modchip installed in my other slim.

    Whatever happened to just chipping your system without all the dumb shit on screen and « options » that are absolutely pointless and unnecessary. I’ve been dying to unlock my ps2 for playing imports but keeping everything legitimate,as it was meant to be minus region lock; I guess my only real option is importing an actual PAL and NTSC J system nowadays.
